Giant Spiders?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 2:36 pm

I know this 'complained' (if it can be considered one) will mostlikely make me look like a fool or coward..
but do we really need giant spiders off all things?
I think I dont speak just for myself when I say that arachnophobie is the most common fear in the world.(or at least it is said to be..)
I know for a fact that I have never taken spiders in a game well, even in games as old as thief 1.
So yea, point of the topic? I don't really know... just want to hear thoughts on this and if anyone ells has an alike thing to mention, feel free to post it here.

P.S. Giant Spiders are not even an very original idea!

[censored], people need to harden up, who gets scared of something on a game. If its your phobia, tough [censored] its there and you're gonna have to face it in life so why the hell are you crying about it being in a game? Get it on PC and get the mod that will most likely be available on the first f****** day of release...

The thing is it's in the vanilla game no matter how much you fear or disagree with it, I suggest you face your fears. Or you could just buy the PC version, first week I can almost guarantee someone will make a mod replacing them.

It has come up quite a bit lately. Myself, I think they will look fantastic, but the option has been suggested for some sort of substitute bug.

I think the best solution is probably just not having them as a mandatory part of the main quest, and something that any player can avoid.

I cannot believe this is a thing.

To this day, I can still be startled (and creeped out) by the zombies in "Eye of the Beholder". :vaultboy:

Hey, Japanese hair ghosts ala The Grudge scare the beejeezies out of me but this is a whole new level. People want mods to get these thing's out of the game.

I just... don't know what to think about that. It feels like a joke everyone is playing on us.

I know it's weird but it's a mix of attraction and utter terror...

Yeah...

Anyway, you ever play Fatal Frame: The Crimson Butterfly? I could feel my heart beating in my ears the entire game, start to finish. That game was scary as hell, pure nightmare fuel for me. I had to pause the game every now and then to take a breather, but I don't want all the ghosts edited out of the game.

I can understand fear but this, this is different. It's a just a video game, right?

Just wanted to mention to all the guys who go 'svck it up...'
stop trying to be the overcool 'I fear nothing!' people who's only point in replying is to flame another person. I made it clear in my very first sentence that I knew such an reaction will be made by most, so you don't actully have to make such a reply, it is pointless.
And yes, 'it is just a game', does not stop people from going insane on the idea of relationships in the game. Some people whined about that, made topic and polls, I think it is just fair for someone ells who has a complain about something ells to make his topic about it. Try equality and you get the best game, instead of sensless flaming.
(this reply is mostly my reaction to this topic and the other topic started by the German guy. And well, the whole flaming thing having been kinda common in some other topics too.)

(edit: And well, I can actully 'svck it up' as I played through Thief and Dark Messiah anyway, just saying that large amounts of spiders(most off all at this level of emerson and 'realism') is really going to hamper the fun for some, and maybe even make it unplayble.)

I have seen them I just never commented because I thought it was a joke. And it is kind o funny but not in the normal sense.

Honestly I want to believe the people afraid of these giant spiders will still play the game regardless. What's more theraqeutic than facing you'r fears head on and bashing it in the exoskeleton with a mace?

My heart goes out to the poor souls who fear these eight-legged abominations, who build webs in the most unlikeliest of corners, carry a venomous bite on large protruding fangs, and whose members include the Black Widow, who is tiny but numerous, the Brown Recluse and its necrosis, and the Sydney Funnel Web Spider, with its aggressive demeanor and fatal bite. Not to pat myself on the back, but I play for them this beautiful song of my own composition: :violin:

To be honest I'm scared of spiders too; but this is just a game, and will have no affect on me whatsoever.

It's quite funny seeing all the post saying "svck it up!!" or "toughen up"
I'm sure everyone has a fear of something or someone.
I for one do not like spiders at all however...http://cdn.gamerant.com/wp-content/uploads/Skyrim-screenshot-giant-spider.jpg simply looks awesome. Nord with a huge two-handed axe VS A Spider the size of a truck? Yes please!
PS:
I'm not sure if you knew this or not but their are Spider Daedra in Oblivion, half woman/half spider.

Funny story. Actually just got attacked by a pretty damn big spider that fell on my arm while I was bootin up my laptop here. Scared me half to death. Can't wait to kill some big ones to try and make myself feel a little bit better.

Every couple of weeks a thread about this pops up.

I say the same every time.
A phobia avoided is a phobia made worse. You are teaching yourself fear if you go through great lengths to avoid something.
Literally, the pathways in your brain for this behaviour get stronger everytime.

Instead you must confront your phobias.
Skyrim is a game, its less real than a photograph. This is a great oppurtunity. Blast them with fire, chop them with an axe.
Dont run, dont hide, face your fears.
This is the way to break from following the familiar and negative neural pathways and create and strengthen some positive ones.

This is an opportunity, not a disaster.
Man (or woman) up.

P.S: To this day large real life spiders still send chills down my spine. But spiders go squash and I have become quite good at throwing a thick book at em. It really is best not to give in to this phobia.

The little critters in the mines in Jedi Knight 2 used to scare the crap out of me as a kid. You know what I did? I cheated so that I got my lightsabre early, and I sliced them to pieces. I stalked those mines like a wild thing, hacking and slashing at anything that moved. I didn't proceed with the game until I knew I had killed all of them. And I was never afraid of them again.

So yeah Skyrim might be some good therapy for arachnophobes. Fear of spiders? Great! Here's a battleaxe! Go get 'em.

Well firstly, it is not the most common fear. Last time I checked, fear of spiders was 9th. (behind: rejection, failure, death, intimacy, dark, heights, public speaking and flying.)

Secondly, you have to take into consideration that only a small percentage of arachnophobics are actually scared to the point where they cant play a game with a spider in it. Most of them are just very uneasy around real spiders.

Removing giant spiders would cater for a very small group of people so it is highly unlikely (nor recommended) that Bethesda would even consider it. Like I mentioned earlier, more people are afraid of heights. Do you want Skyrim to be flat? Didn't think so.

These spiders are not real, if you are severely arachnophobic, wait for someone to mod them out.
