Give the Orcs Japanese Accents!

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 7:55 am

That sounds really stupid.

"Feeru my batoru akkusu?" "Feel my battle axe"

Now,I love Japanese stuff but this would be FAIL no matter how I slice it... :shakehead:

OP asked for a Japanese that speaks English, not a Japanese spelling chains of katakana

Also, when a Japanese pronounces those katakana you typed, it sounds a lot more like a real English word. Not quite but still close (although it's "close")

Take a look at Fate/Unlimited Blade Works movie and hear how Archer speaks English (when he initiated his Unlimited Blade Works). Surprisingly, he does it very well, and doesn't sound like a Japanese speaking Engrish at all

I live in New England, land of the American Irish. I myself am Irish. My family is full of Irish folks. And none of us have Irish accents :P

America is full of accents, but most of them are native to the country, with the exception of Spanish accents caused by a large minority of Hispanics who immigrate from Latin America.

Anways, I think Orcs should have Orc voices. Deep, almost bestial. It's pretty commonplace among Orcs how they talk. In fact, I think the interpretation on Tolkein lore is probably the best way to go in this case. What I do think should happen, though, is that the gruff male Dark Elf voices from Morrowind should make a comeback. I'm not going to go into any sort of merry delusion of how everything in Morrowind was a perfect, but I do think that their voices added a unique sense of character to the Dunmer that was absent in Oblivion. Part of the problem, perhaps, is that the poor voice actor couldn't stand to give extended dialog with that voice. Short comments are easy, but thousands of lines when speaking like that could tear up anyone's vocal cords. Fortunately, one of the things they've said for Skyrim is that there will be clear racial distinctions. That makes me pleased.
I 100% agree with the dark elves having a more gruff, hard voice. In oblivion i felt like every elf i was talking to was 14 years old.
also, just to correct you, the way the Dunmer speak in Morrowind would not in any way effect the actors voice as he is using a false chord technique or maybe even vocal fry, neither of which should put any strain on the vocal chords if done right, so theres no excuse ;)

Proper Dunmer voices wouldn't be that much of a problem, look at the ghouls in Fallout 3, the actors there use the same voice technique and if used sparingly it won't do any harm to your vocal cords. With a few actors to share the work recording all those lines with the appropriate voices would be absolutely no problem.

Exactly, take it from a vocalist who plays around with those kinds of harsh vocal techniques in his music, no vocal chords were harmed in the making of morrowind (as far as the actors are concerned)

Orcs have no real world equivalent, but they seem to be pretty based on traditional Tolkein Orcs. The only time that they've shown any real cultural equivalence with a real culture is with their armor, which was samurai armor in Morrowind. I don't think the reason for that is because the orcs are Japanese though. If you look at a typical set of Samurai armor, there is usually a mask. Oftentimes, the mask will be stylized as an http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs46/f/2009/249/c/a/Samurai_Oni_Mask_by_mshydeplz.png. I think, on implementation, oni masks resemble orc faces. In the Elder Scrolls world, that wouldn't happen by coincidence, though it could in the real world. Therefore, in the Elder Scrolls world, a mask like that would be like an orc, while in the real world people would recognize it as an oni. So, what Bethesda did was they added samurai armor, but because oni faces can resemble Orcs, it made more sense to call it Orcish armor than to name it after the samurai, who don't exist in TES.

I think Orcs have many real world and fictional influences, but they definitely don't take much from Tolkein's image of an orc. They have very little in common besides their noses, teeth, and the name "Orc."

I'm trying to find a good way to learn that technique myself actually, being able to do a proper Dunmer/Ghoul/Batman voice would be very usefull for modding purposes.

The power of a Nord can be articulated into a shout, like the kiai of an Akaviri swordsman.

Kiai (気合?) (English pronunciation: /?ki?.a?/) is a Japanese term used in martial arts.

That page is completely inaccurate and makes no sense whatsoever.

Nords do not have magic powers and do not shout to cause mass destruction and such, that's all just made up fan lore (But what more can you expect on UESP? Half the information there is unofficial)

The shouts they are talking about are dragon shouts and they are restricted to a specific group of nords and dragonborn.

Also I don't understand why you linked this in the first place.

That's a book straight out of Oblivion.

Seeing as the Ocs culture and weapons armours and honour is Based on the Japanese Samurai's i thinkt the orcs should be given a deep japanese accent for skyrim1

First off, I respectfully say no. If you buy the PC version and mod in Japanese voices for yours orcs fair by me. Sounds like a bad idea for the general crowd.

Also, I sense a more Mongolian style than something like those Tokugawa-Era samurai of nobility. Bleh.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's particular real world elements though. They had to get their inspiration for the TES world somewhere.

That would being like giving a chipmunk voice to a lion.

Imagine if imperials should have a italian accent, all walking around sounding like Super Mario clones.
And the nords with Norwegian accent and so on, would sound completly [censored].

Still, the nord and imperial accents would at least make more sense due to their apperance. A orc has nothing in common at all with a japanese in apperance, orcs are big and strong, brutes. If they had to have a accent it would be more fitting to have it voiced by deep voiced scandinavian.

A possible source of inspiration for the Thu'um, is the Scandinavian magic that was practiced during the viking age, called Galder/Galdr, which litterally means "to sing/shout". It was special songs, with magic effects, for example invisibility.

What do you mean by that? Thats a [censored] argument. There are tons of people who watch anime, tons of games that are dominated by asian culture etc.
if some people get sick of it is because its sometimes way too much of it.

"everyone hates Scandinavians, since no games have scandinavian accents" according to that logic.
