Give users control to turn off mature content

If you did even a decently good job parenting your kids will be able to handle the moderate advlt content in an ES game. Stop worrying.

The Daggerfall version of The Real Barenziah was the only thing in TES that was even slightly disturbing

You honestly think a graphic lesson in Khajiit anatomy is more disturbing than mutilated hanging corpses in Oblivion?

Note to parents:

Not everyone has to cater to you and your kids.

If you dont want them to play an M rated game, then dont let them, and pretend like you actually believe them when they said they were "not playing M rated games" when they were over at their friend's house.

Why should developers have to waste time to do your job for you?

I think it should be fine... if they go overboard like GoW did then a simple blood/gore/language toggle switch isn't hard... And the only way I can really see this game going over board with stuff like that would be either in Finishing Moves or the Romance(s). However, I do not expect Bethesda to let it go over board.

And I agree in the end it boils down to the parents to protect their own children. And most teens and tweens would know how to find the toggle switch to turn it off, at least i was when i was young. The issue with simply not letting your own kids play it does not mean they won't at a friends house. The real thing a parent must do with their children is to establish morals so that they can make the "right / proper / decision-you-would-be-happy-with" option.

I don't get this whole debate of turning on/off certain "Mature" features.
People don't seem to understand that creating options to turn certain features off takes a lot of time. Time, frankly, they can use to better polish the game and make it better all around.
And besides, why would you buy your 'tween' or under 17yo children play a MATURE game and hope it has options to turn the MATURE content off. Thinking this will happen is just silly and comes from an outright bloated sense of importance; developing the game and making sure it's balanced is the developers main priority until it's released, not you.

Oh and why let your kids KILL creatures but not let them see a little blood or people cursing (not that there is even a lot of it on TES).

And no, I'm not one of those people who hates Young kids playing games not appropriate for their age. After all, i was one of them at one point; enjoying GTA1/2/3 by the age of 12.

Never understood why parents want to limit what there children can see, espically when there allowed to kill but not see the blood and stuff like that.
Parents never did that to me, so far I haven't shot up any post offices or anything...

I've never understood why it's okay to show briast but not nipbles. Like they're going to be the thing that makes kids mentally deviant. And Japanese censors are okay with showing a sixual act except that they pixelate a mans dike. Censorship often makes no sense.

Being involved in the making of an Indie game I know its not too too incredibly hard to make these. You need a separate animation set for the lesser content, which depending on the content could take some time, but in general it shouldn't take more then a week to a month to eliminate most of it. The toggle switch simply tells the game to use "altfinishingmove.eg" rather then "finishingmove.eg"

There's really no reason to do this. It's time away from more important things. Skyrim is a mature game for mature players.

I agree, yes it should only take a month to render non-gory finishing moves but I would rather them spend that month doing things such as more armors, quests, etc

Agree, all of this talk of having an off button for mature content is Ludicrous. If you can't handle it then don't play it.

Dear Mr. Hefner

I believe that your periodical contains many fascinating articles on cuisine, technology, and fashion which my young children would greatly appreciate. However, I find that the nudity contained within is inappropriate for their age and ask that it be removed.

Get your kids to play Mario, or Zelda, or Fable, or the other 99/100 games with fluffy, inoffensive content. I'm sorry, but this game is already dumbed down and streamlined, it doesn't need to be censored...even optionally.

Turn off mature content in an M rated game?

Hmm let me think.

No, how about you deal with it.

Unless youre a mormon, your teenagers are already doing plenty of things that would make you cringe if you found out about them anyways. At this point your main objective should be to steal their bag and re-live your glory days.

Dear, Penthouse

I thought something like this would never happen to me yesterday I picked up one of your articles to browse through them last weekend, come to find out there is inappropriate images in the article I had to cut them out so I could enjoy them. I wish that in your future articles you will make a "clean" edition so I would not have to go into all of the trouble.

;)

But ya get a Wii if you don't want mature rated titles pretty much

I understand your point, but that is a month better spent on something that ADDS to the experience, squishing bugs, tweaking the physics, and/or expanding the 'Skyrim' experience. They can freely work on a "Patch" after they release the game on 11/11/11. Until then dedicating resources to make the game Teenage friendly is hardly worth it in my opinion.

A toggle for ALL the things that would be considered offensive in some way or another would leave us with a walking simulator in a dead world.

great idea
they could replace every word that could offend someone with the caw of an exotic bird
and blood could be replaced with confetti!
or younger gamers could just stick with the games that are for their age group and get an m game when their mature enough

If your kid is too young to handle M-rated games chances are they are too young to fully enjoy Elder Scrolls anyway.

I don't think they use any bad language in TES universe, and there is no sixual content (unless you count people in unremovable underwear) and theres no dismemberment, and the blood isn't all that bad.

Considering offensive language is pretty well non-existant in Tamriel, the only things that I'd consider potential risks for minors would be mature content (brothels, drinking, drugs, etc.) and blood and gore. I suspect like oblivion there will be a toggle for blood, but I'm not sure they can toggle something like Skooma use. Unless they make a script in the game that renders all illegal substances unusable.

Possible, remain to be seen.

I can't believe so many people have such an immature stance on the option to turn off gore. Liking gore isn't some mark of maturity. Some of us don't want to see it.

Even Gears of War, a very gory game, lets people do that. The most gory FPS of all time when it came out, Rise of the Triad, let people reduce or turn off gore. At least in the games I played, the Halo series which is one of the most successful shooters of all time doesn't even have graphic gore.

Gore isn't some magical mark of maturity and has never been an essential part of games. I don't see why some people act like it's integral to TES. I'd seriously reconsider getting the game if it had Fallout 3 level gore, unless they had an option to turn it off or a mod was out to disable it.

If it has mature content, it will be rated M. The young kids should be playing games more suitable to their ages, and if they do somehow get their hands on Skyrim.. it'll be geared towards the age group of those who are old enough to buy an M rated game. End of the story.

That being said, I'm not against having a toggle option that turns certain things off if it doesn't take too long to develop. I wouldn't make it a priority though.
