Giving Oblivion a second chance - its been a long time!

Hey there Oblivion forum! Man, its been a long time since ive even touched Oblivion. Ever since Fallout 3 I always stuck to the Fallout side of Bethesda much more, although now that I have a hefty amount of hours in Skyrim, I think its time to take a step back in time, so to speak.

Ive never played very much Oblivion, and the main thing that kept me from playing it very much was the tall tales of the level scaling. So, is there some way to mod it out? All I really want is something closer to Fallout 3, where the bandits equipment doesnt scale up to full daedric but instead stays in the sort of fur/iron/steel stuff. The creatures and what not I am fine with scaling, but all I really want is a way to destroy that immersion breaking "Bandits in the best armour known to Tamriel holding you up for 50 gold" stuff.

I'd also like some advice on what sort of character is best for this game. I was thinking of a knightly battlemage for my first character, and since I have all of the DLC that Battlehorn castle looks rather nice. Looking up the skills it looks like ill be making use of Blade for two handed claymores, Heavy Armour for some platemail steel and ebony, and Restoration, Alteration, and Destruction as my main spells.

Ive seen a couple of the faces from when I posted a little bit on the Fallout 3 forums here, so hopefully I can get into Oblivion and enjoy it this time :)

Welcome back to Oblivion and don′t care too much about the scaling/leveling thing. Just make sure to have fun :) If you′re on PC you can use a mod that randomize what armour the bandits are wearing so that′s no problem.

Welcome back to Cyrodiil!

Actually, it has been a while since I have traveled Cyrodiil myself, funny since Oblivion is where it all started for me

Vvardenfel was my first taste of that delicious Bethesda, as you can probably tell by my Telvanni avatar, although I didn't get really hooked until Fallout 3.

Oblivion was quite a huge dissapointment for me back in the day, although to be honest I think a good amount of that was a bit of groupthink from lurking these forums. When I lurk the Skyrim end of the forums there's a whole bunch of hate for Skyrim and everything about it, and Oblivion back in the day was even worse. I was also quite young at the time, so there's that :P.

Ive been trying to play a Kensai character in Morrowind recently, and sadly I dont think I can enjoy my gateway game anymore. Technology has just advanced so far since Morrowind, and im not just talking about the graphics. Oblivion with its full voice acting and NPC schedules makes the world feel so alive, whereas Morrowind just feels..Well, dead to me. I know that technically none of these worlds are "alive" but Morrowind doesnt do a lot to make it seem less robotic. Back in the day it was very enthralling though, and I can appreciate that.

Ive been looking through the mods, and ive played with some of the overhaul mods before. I think there's something to be said for experiencing this game vanilla though, warts and all. All that's really left is to assign a good personality to my knightly battlemage, and that might take a little while, considering he doesnt even have a name yet :P.

I was complaining about this very thing awhile back and a good friend of mine suggested I try http://www.nexusmods.com/oblivion/mods/3321/? The mod uncouples weapons and armor from player level. There is a small chance of finding anything on enemies at any level - no more of this "virtually-every-bandit-wears-Glass Armor-at-level-20" syndrome. It does not affect creatures and NPC scaling at all, just loot. I have been liking this mod very much.
