Glass/Daedric/Dwarven armor: MW or OB style?

Post » Thu Apr 22, 2010 8:31 am

I figured we have so many redundant polls around here nowadays it couldn't hurt to have another one. I need the distraction from the omnipresent lack-of-Gameinformer syndrome. Just a few more days! *huff huff huff*

Anyway, one thing I've often noted is that the progression from Morrowind to Oblivion incurred a lot of stylistic changes, especially in weapons and armor. Whereas Morrowind's equipment relies heavily on texture details to the point of being totally garish, much of Oblivion's items were designed with a slightly more earthly, medieval approach. The three most iconic armor sets, and also the ones that have seen the most radical changes, are the dwarven, glass, and Daedric sets. I've seen lots of arguments in favor of each iteration, as well as mods for both games attempting to reproduce one or the other style.

For the record, I'm not necessarily implying that Skyrim's armor must be a carbon-copy of Morrowind or Oblivion's. Just, as far as the style goes, I was curious as to which ones people prefer. I'd rather people who have only played one of the two games not vote, or at least take a look at the images on the UESP to get an idea of what all the armor designs are like:

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Dwarven / http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Glass / http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Daedric
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-item-Dwarven_Armor.jpg / http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-item-Glass_Armor.jpg / http://www.uesp.net/wiki/File:OB-item-Daedric_Armor.jpg

Personally, I greatly preferred Morrowind's approach to the glass and Daedric sets - they had a far more imposing look, and yet, there was far more attention to detail. The glass armor in Oblivion looks like it's hammered out of green apple Jolly Ranchers to me, and the Daedric set is just a bizarre, swirling mess of reds and browns. As far as Dwarven armor is concerned, I greatly preferred Oblivion's as I'm sure this is what the Dwemer actually wore. Although I'd prefer a helmet that made you look less like a steam engine. :ninja:

Morrowind style for Daedric and Glass. I have to say, though, that I like the Babylonian style (love that hip-wrap) in TESIV. Could use some improvement, though. The Dwemer armor in TESIII made my butt look huge - and how did my head fit inside that helmet, anyway?

Don't much care about the armor, really- as per the way things have gone in the series, each will be "the next version."

Only thing I'm really too concerned about is Dwemer weapons- I liked the look of them in Morrowind, while the ones in Oblivion looked...dull. As in cutting edge rounded. Swords looking like they deserved to be classified as blunt weapons (along with every melee weapon that wasn't a sword  ) rather than anything with a blade.

I greatly prefered the glass and daedric armour in Morrowind, as for the dwemer armour i didnt really like either, the oblivion version would have been better had the helmet not looked so silly.
On a related note, i hope if dwemer armour is included that it is called 'dwemer', i know they are often refered to as dwarves by imperials but having a set of dwarven armour just doesnt feel the same as having a set of dwemer armour
On a slightly related but mostly unrelated note i also hope they dont include elvish armour in skyrim, honestly what was elvish armour anyway? Ayleid armour? Altmer? Bosmer? It just made no sense and looked like something straight out of lord of the rings, i hope next time they implement armours from different races of mer instead of one generic all encompassing elven armour type.

Wasn't Morrowind Daedric forged by mortals with a daedra soul trapped inside of it, while Oblivion Daedric was forged by the daedra themselves? I can't remember very specifically. Anyways, I prefer the Morrowind version, the face of inspiration was awesome, and I also liked how ridiculously rare it was.
The glass in morrowind seemed crude, like most of the other armors in the game, but it was pretty cool looking. Probably something altogether different would be ideal for me.
I have no thoughts on the dwemer ones. No idea where to go with that.

OH and sicklecell, the elven was supposed to be ayleid, they probably could've used the name ayleid armor instead.

Really? Would've been a bit more obvious if they had called it that :glare:

I want both! with Daedric armor from morrowind following lore (it made sense for morrowind, Dunmer worshipped daedra, and same for oblivion, Daedra were attacking)

just both please and Skyrims own version.

I really want an update of the Nordiic Mail and Ice armor that were available in Bloodmoon.

But anyways, on topic: I preferred the Glass and Dwemer armors from Oblivion, and the Daedric from Morrowind. Not just for the way it looked, but just the fact of how difficult it was to have a complete set of it. In my opinion, the fact that every bandit in Cyrodiil wore it when I got to level 20 in Oblivion was the most egregious sin of TES:4. If there is Daedric armor in Skyim, there should only be a couple of sets of it and it should be a huge quest to get it. Daedric armor should be rare, and only worn be the select few. Not every Marauder, or whatever the Skyrim equivalent of them will be. Now that I think of it, there shouldn't be a lot of Glass armor either. From the rumors I heard in Oblivion from the NPC's, I can't see the Dunmer exporting their best armor technology to their worst enemy.

You know, funnily enough I was thinking about this recently.

I was kind of amazed at myself to find I prefer some of the graphics of Morrowind over oblivion, especially glass, daedric, ebony armor and weapons. And soul gems.

I preferred Morrowind's Glass Armor but I much preferred Oblivion's Daedric and Dwarven armors. I doubt a lot of people want the best heavy armors to leave the elbows and knees exposed.

But I wouldn't be opposed to having both styles.

where's the something new option?

I actually believe the game will have a totally different style which will look nothing like the stuff we've already seen. Much like Oblivion equipment looked nothing like the stuff we found in Morrowind

The glass armour design in Morrowind was just beautiful...

Shame about Oblivion's

I think it was the rarity of the Daedric armour in Morrowind that made it one of my favourites. Oh, and the fact there were a variety of helms.

Oblivion's? total opposite. At a certain level, the stuff was coming out of my ears. It became boring quickly.

Yesh I don't mean to bash on oblivion 'cos I'm not. It's just how things are.

I'm really helping at least some of the Bloodmoon equipment turns up in Skyrim. Maybe even a severed Nord leg for good measure.

A new version of daedric, inspired by the MW style would be the way to go imo. Those faces on the helmets and slick black plates are iconic. It would be cool if they had 3 versions of daedric helmet again.

The dwemer and dwarven they can go and experiment completely if they like, I wouldn't be too bothered.

Glass.. just as long as it looks nothing like Oblivions version. :sadvaultboy:

I think the armors should look... well, not realistic, certainly not ( i think Todd Howard should've learned with Oblivion that realistic design is not always a good thing. I read a quote by him in Game Informer (the teaser they had on the last pages of the previous issue) and Todd Howard puprosely made the Oblivion cities more "medieval", removing things like the Telvanni Mushroom-thingy-houses)
But the armor should look more... practical. Stylized yes, fantastic yes, impossibly imposing, sure why not, but when you have a helmet that CLEARLY would've made seeing impossible, probably forced you to look down because the front visor was so heavy, and just generally made you look like a pencil, is not a good thing. (Yes... i mostly speaking of the Dwemer armor... of both games)

But the glass armor too... the spikes in Morrowind were cool, but they were SO big movement would've almost certainly been awkward at the very least.
Glass in oblivion didn't seem to cover as much as it should've (mind you i get that light armor covers more essential things, its not plate, but the armor was missing in the wrong spots)

In general I like games that have crazy, even absolutely ridiculous armor, just so long as it makes SOME semblance of common sense as to why they were designed the way they were.

Well, according to the developers, the Lord of the Rings movies had an important stylistic effect on the development of Oblivion. So hearing that, I'm not surprised.

Glass: Oblivion
Daedric: Morrowind or Oblivion. I'm not picky, I think both look cool.
Dwemer: Morrowind

Just my personal opinions. lol I cannot wait until I read the new GameInformer !!!!!!

Just naysaying a bit here.

The glass armor in OB looked like green steel 9http://images.uesp.net//4/47/OB-item-Glass_Armor.jpg)and in MW many pieces looked like unrefined glass was haphazardly into some of the pieces of armor (http://images.uesp.net//2/28/MW_Armor_LightPauldrons.jpg, for instance) but MW had a much better take.

I am not sure if Dwemer showed up too much in DF but I think I would take a certain level of consistency over any particular design.

I definantly think Daedric should look different, along with glass. Dwemer, I don't mind.

One thing I could never figure out is if the Dwermer were gone for some time now, where does all this Dwarven armor keep coming from? You figure it would be as rare as Orcish weapons by now.
