A glimpse at gore and more mature design

Post » Mon Dec 06, 2010 12:29 pm

I've seen quite a few topics popping up on here regarding how mature the game will be this time around... and by mature I mean violent, dark and much grittier game world as opposed to a OB. Take a good look at this image from Game Informers "Art of Skyrim" video. *It is a bloody/gory pic*

[

On the left image there is a body hanging on a pillar thats been eaten up by small dogs. The body appears to most likely be female and is quite a graphic scenario compared to the majority of what we saw in the past. I know it's only concept art and isn't an in game image but it shows a definite increase in showcasing a brutal and violent world. I personally as an older gamer (well early 30's, not that old hehe) I appreciate more of a grown up/mature level of brutality in a game world. Just as long as its not over done to the point of being common and ridiculous.

Note that I'm not saying the whole game world should be bleak, violent and horrific.... Just a few locations, missions, dungeons be more horror/thriller influenced then just bashing skeletons and zombies. Your thoughts? :)

Yes, I've noticed too. It doesn't look that bright, does it. I hope this means we'll get to see some darker stuff in the final product.

Yeah kinda, but it's realistic, very realistic. Life is harsh, dangerous in these times and it's great to have this portrayed in game.

never noticed that wouldn't mind a bit more gore (not necessarily dismemberment) and looking at the screen there's someone called "The Executioner" wonder if that's related to the concept art above it

I too like this. I hope some darker tone stuff makes it into the game.

No, The Executioner art is a dude with the long axe and a severed head on his hand.

Concept art is always more stylish and mature than the final product, mainly because concept artists are not limited by rules and regulations. How that all translates into the actual game however is something totally different. I am in the same demographic as you are mr. OP, and I too want a more mature game. I'm not sure how boobies and guts are mature (seems immature to me) but I want to see that all the same. We already know the game will be more worn and aged than Oblivion, where everything was bright, shiny and new looking. I really hope that the gore and sixual themes are just appropriate enough for immersions sake.

I am at least hoping for The Witcher 2 to reach this level of mature-ness. I doubt Skyrim will, I would love, but yeah you are right, it always has to be toned down...

Remember what happened to Lucien Lachance in the Following a Lead quest? Yeah, I would not mind that kind of dark tone.

They're Arctic Fox equivalents.

And the Picture on the Right, Sacrificial Table with dead body and severed head on the alter.

I don't mind violence as long if it isn't pervasive or out of place. That Oblivion quest in the light house with all the heads and notes was too much of a serial killer vibe and did not suit the game. I wouldn't go further than Oblivion personally, the Lord of the Rings films would have limited their audience if they went further and I don't think those films were limited narratively.

The reason I think they are rats is because they don't have bushy tails, foxes generally aren't subterranean, and canines rarely stand on their hind legs, whereas rats do it constantly http://www.abs-forum.org/images/rat_standing.jpg

I'd like to see a bit more blood, but not a blood bath. The Elder Scrolls is not that kind of game.

There was a lot of "gore" and corpses in dungeons in Oblivion--in undead dungeons and quests involving the undead--lots of bodies and zombie body parts (mort flesh mosty, I guess). I think this is just the same.

If I remember, the dungeon "Arkved's Tower" was pretty gruesome at some points.

Exactly. What's with the idea that Oblivion was so much less dark and gory than those pictures? It seems right on par with it. Oblivion had nvde rotting corpses being hanged and mutilated in all sorts of ways all over the place. Another perfect example is Lucien Lachance, who got really mutilated by his former peers, later Dark Brotherhood member dialogue implies Arquen feasted on his entrails.

That concept art is right in line with Oblivion.

THEY. ARE. ARCTIC. FOXES!, maybe we should have a poll for this.

Foxes can climb and clamber up on tables if there's food on them (like in the picture).

(They might be sketches of snow wolves)
