'No Glow' Enchanted Items

I don't care at all about the glow thing, but I love that your poll rhymes, so I voted "go" anyway.

Items not having any effects takes away the coolness, and I need coolness and awesomeness

fiery axes and lightning sparking on swords looks badass

We might already know what they look like... or at least we know what one kind of chanted item looks like.. the staff. Unlike ob staves this time dont have that plasticwrap look.

Staves never had a glow.

Perhaps runic markings or something?

That would work, or at least make it so it isn't covered in shininess. Wear an enchanted robe in Morrorind (or any other armor, for that matter). Those things shined A LOT. Runic Markings would be nice, but they would need some variation for custom enchantments (if there is custom enchantments). I think that frost damage should cause different rune marks than shock, maybe with different colors (any brighter for higher magnitudes).

No games are perfect, and that is what everyone does with every game, if they can't find a big problem they nitpick at miniscule ones.

I have always liked that glow and was a little disappointed when it was toned down for Oblivion.

I think the look should be altered. This could mean that glowing engravings, nice and ornate, would get magically etched into the armor, if its enchanted with ice, it could have frost falling off it (subtly), little icy spikes here and there maybe, for fire, it could have glowing embers in it here or there, maybe even fire on appropriate parts. Something like that would be much nicer to me. Maybe it could even have moving parts, swirling around, though I don't know what enchantments that would reflect.

Lets say it's a sword with a +20 frost damage on target. Then you get light ripple effects of frost blue going up the blade just barely noticeable.

I like the rune idea. Failing that I'd prefer no visable effects on weapons or armour.

How about enchanted weapons that don't break so damned easily! That would be nice. If your magic sword wasn't exactly as easy to shatter to pieces as any standard hunk of steel.

I'd like to see weapons that light on fire/shock/frost/whatever when you're in a fight (for example, they start glowing when you hit someone, and eventually turn off a few seconds after not hitting anything.) Armor and clothing shouldn't glow at all.

This is obviously an unpopular opinion, but to be honest I like the enchanted items look of Morrowind. To me it always seemed part of the tes world. We talk about making things more "realistic" and I am generally for more realism. But just how is magic real? In the world of tes why couldn't magic manifest itself with vibrant color? I don't know, I just like it.

Glow needs to go. It's a cheap effect. I'd say put some sick runes on them or something more creative.

only thing that should have a glow/effect would be if you could enchant some metal demon guantlet with a fire spell so it constantly crackels with a writhing flame waiting to be cast lol but not in any way like fable 3....its just a thought but the glow was really stupid thats why I never used alot of stuff like weapons with health absorbsion and stuff they were just ugly.

I'm perfectly fine without it. I think it's cool to a degree, but like every body has said the glowing wrap around enchanted items is annoying and much more often than not has me using just regular old stuff, even if the said enchanted item is MUCH BETTER. Which I'm perfectly ok doing yet again. :)

How 'bout the said enchanted item only glows or does whatever magical effect, when it's effect is in direct use?

For example, say you have a sword with fire damage- why not when you pull back to begin your strike maybe some embers (or flames depending on the amount of damage) begin to stir and blow down the blade as you strike. So it's not all like "Look at me I have a glowing sword! It must be VALUABLE! (or good!)" Maybe the weapons of LEGENDARY status could have some ominous, residual glow?

As for Armor- maybe say it's extra shield defense, maybe it could glow in the area it is struck, when it is struck.
If it's an attribute enhancer... Um... I haven't thought of anything yet. :D

These are good ideas.

^ What they said ^

Just replacing glow with the correct effect (fire, water, ice, lightning, energy shield, whatever) would be great
Seeing a coating of poison on poisoned weapons would be cool too (changing the colour of the coating based on the effect or severity would be nice but might take it a bit too far)

The shields in Halo: Reach look pretty good, the shimmer is visible in a sort of outline regardless of what angle you were viewing it at.

And some enchanted weapons in Dungeon Siege looked amazing, but it could be a bit much.

Yah, just some subtle hints until.. BAM!! you get whipped upside the head by some awesome weapon that just enthralls you with it's fantastically magical attributes, so you don't see it coming until the wielder wants to use it's effect, or show it off.
Or be like "What's Up?!" when your armor just recoils the opponent. :D

Now maybe some Legendary weapon (just using the flame sword example again) that was like always flaming, and had ~infinite charge, then I could understand that weapon glowing (or flaming as it would be) all the time, and have to have some special sheath to protect the wielder, when he was using it, and when he's tired of holding it.

Like a few others have said, having runes on the side would also be cool (red coloured writing if it's a fire sword, golden yellow if electric, etc.) especially if the runes glow like there is a candlelight coming from inside the item
