Glowing, almost ghostlike distant meshes! HELP

Post » Thu Jan 13, 2011 12:38 pm

I have used a number of custom distant meshes for dungeon, castle walls. All works fine during the day but at night the whole thing glows. Every mesh gleams like a gleamy thing. I am using a custom moon also (if that would make any difference?)

Heres a couple of screenies:

Any help would be, well very helpful.

This is a common problem from what I've seen. I can't remember why it happens or what the solution is, but I'm just letting you know :P

For starters, the best and most worked on distant LOD objects mod is http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=20053. If it's the one you have installed, then check if you're playing with bloom enabled. Yellow objects is a common problem with LOD mods and bloom. Try switching to HDR or "Off".

Nope I'm running with HDR, and not in Oblivion Vanilla, but in a totally modded world without AEVWD. I'll try running with it off.

I've heard that increasing the fLightLOD settings (ini settings that control the distance at which lights start to fade in) above a certain value can cause this bug to happen. So if you adjusted it manually or use something like Streamline you may want to decrease it. I have mine set to 1750/2000 without problems (as opposed to 1000/1500 in vanilla). IIRC I read that something around 4000 or higher causes this bug sometimes.

No, no change in this aspect of the ini. I wonder if it is the meshes that are doing this as it doesnt happen on all distant meshes, just some. It may be the specular settings in nifskope. The distant meshes are textured with the same textures as close up. Theres barely an fps hit so that never concerned me. My own distant meshes I do custom textures for, as low res as possible, bit these are custom by other people.

I think you're onto something...
* All NiSpecularProperty blocks removed. Leaving these in place causes visual anomalies, most notably the "every LOD turned yellow" issue.

Arthmoor mentioned awhile back that his package contains default VWD meshes that have been optimized to reduce that sort of thing from happening. So if it's really bothering you, try downloading RAEVWD and using his default _far.nif meshes. That will probably make the problem go away.
