Glowing weapons

Post » Sun Jan 23, 2011 1:37 am

Glowing weapons have no place in a gritty, mature shooter that takes place on a floating island with a catroon art style and a Teen rating. How dare they.

I just can't cancel my pre-order fast enough.

If they were to "fix" this "problem" (acknowledging some people see it as such, but I personally don't, and suggest that they wait it out and see how much it affects gameplay before making the call), here's my suggestion.

If teammates/enemies see the glowing gun, fine.

But make it so the player doesn't see their own gun glowing.

Instead, have a faint glow effect around the crosshairs when you have a damage buff - that's what they did in Transformers: War for Cybertron, and it worked perfectly - it was subtle enough not to interfere with your vision/aim, but visible enough that you wouldn't miss it or mistake it for something else.

I would say wait for the game to launch to see if there is an option where you can turn off the glowing effect and have some other indicator, like the picture of the gun flashing and glowing gold but instead the best thing to do is complain prematurely.

Is it pulsing a color really that big of an issue? If it is then don't buy the game and move on. It is a design choice that is really for everyone's benefit. Teammates know that others on their squad are beefed up and ready to get into the fray and it lets the enemy know that the heavy with a glowing mini-gun may be a bit of a problem if left to his own devices.

No, this is how it currently works.

Blame CoD's golden guns for it, because that's where they got it from.

ive said this before, enemies do NOT see you buffed nor do your other teammates have glowing guns. the glowing is only seen but you and you only.

But that would be a problem for Engineers on your side. They'd be like "But I thought I already tossed him a buff" and waste some precious time throwing you another one when your weapons are already buffed as is.

It would make sense for the enemy not to see your golden gun, but then a lot of people would be raging over how a gun is doing more power than it should be, and complaints would be filed everywhere.

I think it should just go cel-shaded.

You're assuming that you can buff somebody who was already buffed. And given that the footage in question is quite old and missing entire elements of the hud, how do we know for certain that you cannot see that an enemy has a buffed gun?

If it's true that nobody else can see the glow but you, then yes, I would prefer some other method of knowing that my gun is buffed. But at the same time, I don't care overly much one way or the other. It /could/ be somewhat distracting, but until I try it for myself I shall reserve my judgement.

There really isn't anyting CoD has not done (also: copied) in one way or another.

So technically everything can be based on (borrowed from) CoD.

not really, if people have mic's (which they should) they can just callout for a buff.

So, if CoD borrows a concept from another game that did the same thing years earlier, and any game after CoD does the same thing, the developers are copying CoD rather than that original game? That's some pretty circular and faulty logic you got there.

Some things are just basic industry standard these days and have nothing to do with CoD.

1. For those saying that your gun should glow to show enemies that you are more powerful, do you really think the game is in one world where it sticks your camera to the head of your player? No, what you see on your gun and what your enemy see's are most likely 2 different renders. Can you even look down and see your feet when not doing parkour? They can make it so your gun glows for others to see, and that yours just glows when you receive it for a second or two.

2. Besides knowing if you've already been buffed before asking for a new buff, is there any reason to constantly be made aware of your guns power? I'm not going to shoot an enemy 3 times and stop because if I had a buffed gun he would die with that many bullets. I'm going to keep shooting them until they die, if it takes 5 shots or 7.

They couldnt just make a particle effect as you shoot bullets instead? Or perhaps make the actual bullets glow a certain color.

Or maybe just have Guile's theme play when your gun gets buffed.

Don't really care at all. It would be the last thing I would complain about. But hey that's just me. There's going to be way too much going on to worry about my gun glowing.

For everyone's clarification, this is a quote directly from the Brink Compendium on Fragworld: "When a player receives a damage buff, the buffed weapon will glow gold, to signal other players that they are carrying a buffed weapon."

Note the signal to OTHER PLAYERS part of that quote.

Here's a link for anyone who still wants to argue: http://www.fragworld.org/frag/community-blogs/brink-info-pt-2-classes-abilites-and-objectives.html

I was wondering why they couldn't do a tasteful glow, empowered battery like lines ala tron sorta, with flowing energy.... maybe a shinning magazine or something to note irradiated or bio ammo being used...

Yeah, something slightly more pleasant and tasteful than this vibrant thing in my face would be nice. On the other hand, I can see why letting other players know that you're buffed is important.

So why can't it be a temporary shimmer for the player (i.e. in first-person view) and a permanent glow for all others looking at our player in-game? Honestly, that's possible, right?

On a related note, that's very good that they got the idea from Team Fortress 2: for example, when a Soldier deploys his Buff Banner or a Medic deploys his Kritzkrieg all the affected players' weapons glow a certain colour. This is a very good thing (I'm slightly biased by loving TF2). But, it only lasts 8 seconds, as long as the buff or charge. If a weapon buff is going to be a life-long thing then I don't think I could stand it. Yes, it's minor, but it would get on my nerves.

If you can turn if off in the first person view and just have a HUD element, but every you can see who's buffed still glows. Compromise no?

Edit: Sorry if you don't quite understand this, its late and I haven't had much sleep, damn insomnia.
