Glowy armor and weapons

Post » Fri Sep 03, 2010 9:00 am

I'm not really sure it it was morrowind or oblivion but in one of those games whenever I put on magical clothes/weapons/gear I would turn into a glowing disco raver.
Do you think Skyrim will follow this trend (also seen in dragon age origins and demons souls) or will it be more subtle?

Demon's Souls has it in a completely different way than MW and OB, it is more like a subtle aura around you instead of on the armor because no armor can actually be enchanted. It's the weapons and shields and rings that gives you an aura, to represent that you can now resist more fire damage because you have an auira around you that reflects fire away from you in small portions. I sure hope enchanted armor won't glow, my mage dressed in black and magic boosting gear wasn't black after that, he was purple. So yeah I hope armor stays as it is no matter what enchantment you place on it. Maybe it could be seen when you do something with the enchantment, like if it boosts your magica, when using that specific magica the armor could glow for 1 second? Or when being hit by something, if you have a shield effect the armor would show the effect. Etc.

Yeah I never really liked the glowing thing, didnt even like the aura in demons souls though it would be ok with me if it was very subtle.

I have nothing against it, doesn't really bother me and it helps in PvP to read what kind of defence your opponent is using.

would be nice if you saw wisps of magic occasionally come from them, or for them to react to being hit.

a detect enchantment spell would be very good though

I like the glowing, but it would be nice if it were more subtle. I do want some visual effects for enchanted items.

Wait, I can't really remember any TES armor being really glowy (with the possible exception of Oblivion glass armor). Since nif file format is confirmed, glow maps are possible and very easy -- meaning that glowy armor is most likely going to be modded in -- but I don't think Bethesda will have anyone running around looking like a Christmas tree.

Or are you talking about magical auras? The replies are talking about a pvp game, which has nothing to do with TES and are confusing me.

I think Oblivion did it right by having the armor react shortly when you put it on and when the enchantment was activated. (ex reflect damage would make you momentarily glow white when you reflected damage.)

I dont mind visual effects such as a flameing sword, or a cloak that hides your face in magical darkness, but just glowing? Come on, it wouldn't be that hard to make cool effects.

In morrowind the armor always glowed. In Oblivion they fixed it.

What? You talk about glowing armor in DS and don't know it has multiplayer, Player versus Player in addition to co-op? :o

Oh, lol. No I was talking about demon's souls as was you, in Skyrim the demon's souls system wouldn't be ok. That's my opinion, but the DS system works in DS.

In both Oblivion and Morrowind, a shader was applied to enchanted armor or weapons, I believe, though Oblivion's effect was actually much more subtle than Morrowind's. Oblivion's was more of a subtle aura like with the shield effect, whereas Morrowind's effect makes items look like they're wrapped in plastic, needless to say, it wasn't very attractive.

I'm not too sure how enchanted armor should look in Skyrim, but I wouldn't mind if enchanted weapons got appropriate particle effects, so long as the effect isn't too overdone. Perhaps if you have say a sword enchanted with fire damage, when you use it to hit someone, fire could come from the blade which then goes away once you're done attacking, that way, you still get to see pretty particle effects on your weapons and can see what kind of enchantment is on a weapon when it attacks, but said effects don't get in the way of admiring the design of the weapon.

Speaking for myself, I'd prefer that the Giant not know that my Armour has a health regen enchantment cause it glows or pulses. It's kinda like playing poker with translucent cards. I'd rather it get frustrated and angry cause it can't work out why the pesky lil human just wont die.

The magic armor in OB didn't look bad in my opinion. It was subtle enough and the glow dissappeared(either glitch or design). I'm not sure where I stand on magic weapons, but I'm sure Bethesda have something great planned for enchantment in general.

It would be great in Skyrim's PvNPC combats to help you guess your opponent's resistances, and I hope such a subtle aura would be in, but not only as the result of enchanted gear, but as the result of any type of buff, spells, and other effects.

They got rid of the glow. Even enchanted weapons don't have it anymore. They said you have to test out a weapon when you get it to see if it's enchanted now since they won't let you know when you receive it.
