'gnolls'

I know but I am wondering about 'Gnolls' I never seen any Gnoll in Cyrodill (or Vvardenfell), but I am noticing there are mountains named after them The Gnoll Mountains If I am correct and I just stumbled on a 'Gnoll Meeting Camp' , what is the lore behind Gnolls and The Elder Scrolls, or is it just a reference to other (D&D) games ?

Just wondering ... Such said I am pretty sure it has been asked before.

Yeah, don't think it's been asked before, and I don't think there's any information.

I would assume it's either a reference or soon to be lore.

Yeah, according to wikipedia, gnolls originated as a mix of gnomes and trolls.

A knoll, however, is a term describing hilly geography or something. So who knows
