God rays (Crepuscular rays)

Post » Mon Apr 05, 2010 6:04 pm

This game is going to undoubtedly have god-rays in it. Even World of Warcraft, the game reviled among millions of irrational forum trolls, has god rays now. They are quite well done by the way in that game.

To answer the OP, yes I want god-rays and I want them quite strong (during sunrise and sunset) and fairly strong during the mid-day. I of course want them underwater as well. Finally, a big no to the oblivion "pop-up" sun. The sun in Oblivion was horrible, there are even instances where you are able to see it behind objects, walls, and buildings at times.

EDIT: To the people that say they have never seen "god-rays" in real-life you really need to go outdoors more. They are very common, and can be quite distinct at times, the video examples are not all that far off from reality if the conditions are right. Lots of dust, pollen, light rain, different particles, or etc in the air.

An example, yes, from real-life.

I work in 3D where we use these rays a lot, but I've never heard the term god rays before ^^, oh well... But ya, I think example 3 is awesome :)

I'd rather have buildings obscure the sun's light. nothing like having your character glow as if they are in direct sunlight when there is a building between you and the light source.

As for light rays shining through stuff, well I imagine it'll be there since it's in their other games.

in his post.

*looks down* Nope. Guess again.

I'd also like to see other effects. I was absolutely thrilled when I saw a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circumhorizontal_arc a month or so ago.

But, as for sun effects... I've always wanted to see a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_flash.

That's some awesome pictures right there. Especially the dynamic shadows, they look really nice (for being modded in a game that came out so long ago).
I think we can pretty much 100% assume dynamic shadows will be there... I mean... almost every single game, if not all, have them now.

Ehh...why does everyone want Skyrim to look like Crysis? If you want Crysis then just play Crysis...

Because Crysis is the best (or at least like, amongst the top 2-3) looking game out there. It has probably the most advanced game engine out of all. And the funniest thing is that it was released in 2007.
With Skyrim having a new engine, we have high hopes that it will look like Crysis. We don't wanna play Crysis, we want its amazing graphics and engine capabilities... I mean, who wouldn't?

*looks down* Nope. Guess again.

Sorry, I changed it to her :)

Btw, that's some cool effects. Didn't know those existed. I hope Bethesda knows it though, would be great to see some "special" weather effects like this.

Climbing coats.. huh. I wonder if we that in Skyrim haha ;)
Mammatus looks crazy.
I'd love to see Aurora Borealis, if it's, of course, nicely implemented.

Looks pretty, but not exactly realistic. I haven't seen an IRL God Ray in my life.

EDIT: I'm sure I have seen them, but nowhere near as obvious as they are in those videos. Sun glare is generally very subtle, which those videos are not.

Videos using my godrays/sunshafts/crepuscular rays shader. I try to make them subtle but user feedback is mostly "I can't see them." :P I always recommend them to wait for sunrises and sunsets at cloudy weather. It is far from perfect. It is also not a real volumetric effect, like Crysis one, just an illusion. Stalker: Call of Pripyat and Metro 2033 have volumetric lighting effects.

I actually plan to make them even more subtle in next versions. Though, I should mention it is entirely customize-able. So you can tweak them to be subtle or powerful, yourself.

PS. I actually saw mammatus a couple months ago. What I really want to experience is Aurora Borealis. Skyrim setting fits for Aurora Borealis type effects if it is in the lore too.

Skyrim better have godrays because that shader technique is becoming standard in this generation and they better have the other next-gen standard shaders like: SSAO, dynamic lighting, DoF and perhaps even global illumination.

Not at the top of my wish list, but they can make a scene look nice. I wouldn't be devastated if they were not in.

I'm such a svcker for Godrays, i'd sure like to see it done well in Skyrim as well as the implementation of some underwater rays.
I'm not a huge fan of the pop-in thing that was used in Oblivion; but I suppose i'm not that bothered whether it's included or not, I never really noticed it in Oblivion and i'm sure if the sky is done well, with some god godrays, I wont mind it at all.

No doubt if it's not included in the vanilla game that Modders will add it in soon enough, and like Oblivion and Morrowind, that's good enough for me.

Seems like a lot of people hated Oblivion's pop up sun flash. I do too.

im suprised some of the "graphics dont matter, only gameplay" people havent accused the OP of not caring about gameplay and just caring about eye-candy. thank god those people werent in charge of PC technology over the years or we would still be playing pong on monochromatic monitors.

there is no excuse not to have godrays and ambient occlusion and soft shadows dynamic realtime lighting and a good physics engine and other DX11 goodies at least for the PC version.

Looking forward to your next release :D
Using your god rays atm and like them very much.
Makes sunsets and sunrises a lot more beautiful!
So it's a disappointment if Skyrim doesn't have them from the start... I think.

But putting in graphics stuff like godrays will guarantee that the gameplay svcks! All the prettyness fries the brains of Bethesda employees so they decide to make level scaling worse than ever!

I voted yes for god rays, both above and underwater. The thing the strong one was a little too intense, even though I like them to be fairly intense.
