God rays (Crepuscular rays)

Post » Mon Apr 05, 2010 8:31 am

So... do you want them? ;)
Here are some video examples, showing what I think is strong and quite subtle god rays, just so that you can have some perspective:

Strong god rays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7B3HnukQVQ&feature=related
Quite subtle god rays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knzXv62tbi4&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrS1uJ7faqM&feature=related

To explain what I mean by the sun "flashing" that existed in Oblivion. See this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV46uzoCaog
It's like a sun "pop-up" when something comes in the way of the sun..
WIthout this "pop-up / flash" the sun shines "smoothly/fluently". Kinda hard to explain in words... the video examples 1, 2 and 3 had this smooth/fluent sunshine.

Personally, I want the godrays to be of that extent showing in video example 3 (from Morrowind :D). That looked really nice, better than Crysis I think. I also dislike the sun "pop-up / flash" as seen in Oblivion. It looked nice when it was there, but it was annoying when all of the sun's lighting disappeared when something was in the way.

In any case, I would feel sad if godrays didn't exist in Skyrim :(
It's not hard to do, and it's really nice (in my opinion)

The godrays in example 1 looks really awesome. I'd like something like that in Skyrim.

Sure. But I'm confused, why should I choose between "strong" and "subtle" ? I like both. Can't we have the two of them, according to location and weather conditions ?

And no to the weird Oblivion lighting thing.

God Rays! Woo! Do want! Especially in water, that'd be awesome too. I also love seeing shafts of sunlight that angle down through gaps in cloud-cover - you know what I mean? Like in the Lion King opening.

God rays?

How about Sun rays?

pop-upped?

Should be popped-up.

I'd prefer something more in between for the God Rays, but if I had to choose in between the two, it would be the stronger ones. And I never was too fond of the sun in Oblivion, the sun doesn't look like that in real life. It's at atmospheric effect, not the sun.

Hopefully the sky in general will be better.

I voted "Yes!" for strong godrays, and "Yes!" for getting rid of the pop-in/pop-out effect (the latter seems a straightforward choice).

Subtle and strong would be nice, but since the rays will only really occur when all or part of the sun isn't directly obscured by cloud, I'd prefer a really spectacular effect. And it's worth pointing out that sunrays ought to look even more beautiful cast upon a nordic/snowy landscape than one like Crysis'.

I'm not sure... god rays basically shows its prime in cloudy/clear weather. In any case, from what I understand a "base" value is set, and then, you can tweak the weather condition in order to fit the strength of the godrays you want, sometimes (I think it's like this in Crysis), although not 100% sure.
When I wrote strong and subtle, I meant the base value. So to your question I guess that a base value is chosen, and then change the weather conditions seperately to fit with how much godrays you want.

True. For visuals, strong's definitely what you want. Wonder if it might not be a tad obstrusive, though *has bad memories of Oblivion bloom*.

Oh okay. Going for subtle, then.

Ah what an interesting topic, never noticed that before . I prefer example 3 . Now looking back when the sun pop'd up it is kinda strange.

Where is the, "No preference" option?
Sure it looked a little nicer, and I wouldn't complain if it was in, nor would I complain if it wasn't in.

It's there now :)

Edit: I noticed the options in question two were a little confusing.
Since the question was "Do you want the sun to "pop-up / flash" (read below for explanation)?"...

Option 1 should be "No! Get rid of Oblivion's "pop-up / flash"!" ... instead of "Yes! Get rid of Oblivion's "pop-up / flash"!"
Option 2 should be "Yes! I liked how the sun "pop-upped / flashed" in Oblivion!" instead of "No! I liked how the sun "pop-upped / flashed" in Oblivion!"

It's fixed now... just in case any future people get confused.

How about God rays? Seeing as that's what they're called at the end of the day.

I also think the Morrowind God rays example was brilliant! The popping in of the sun can go away too.

"Who cares?" option, please?

I think you could accomplish that by not voting.

Anywho, sun rays of any kind would be fantastic.

I added a new underwater god rays question, since Alaisiagae made me think of it in her post. If you voted before... you have to delete your vote and vote again to be able to vote for the underwater god rays.

Looks pretty, but not exactly realistic. I haven't seen an IRL God Ray in my life.

EDIT: I'm sure I have seen them, but nowhere near as obvious as they are in those videos. Sun glare is generally very subtle, which those videos are not.

Ehh...why does everyone want Skyrim to look like Crysis? If you want Crysis then just play Crysis...

At any rate, I hope a more realistic looking version of Sun Rays appear ingame.
