Oh god, there are so many!

So I was just playing Fallout 4 and for the first time since release, I decided to leave the safety of Sanctuary Hills, and help out that settlement Preston told me about, because I heard the enemies get tougher the farther south you go. So I was minding my own business heading east when from a distance I see what looked like an old lady in her nightgown walking. As I drew closer I saw another "old lady." So I use the vats to identify them and to my horror it says feral ghoul. Now I've read the horror stories of how they can swarm the pc, so I decided to pick them off from a distance. The only problem was, that all this did was piss them off. Luckily Codsworth killed them. So I enter the area and see another feral ghoul shuffling about and then I see two more ghouls shuffling about. I fire my weapon and they all rush me with two more ghouls joining the fray, making the total five feral ghouls. They kill me so quickly, that not even Codsworth can save me.

So for those who encountered feral ghouls, are there any tips you can give me? For the recorded I am wearing some raider gear over the vault suit, and am carrying one unmodded pistol and two unmodded shotguns. Any suggestions for modding my gear? I've scrapped all of Sanctuary Hills, so I got a ton of materials.

Sneak around near locations and have high Perception - you should get plenty of warning - [CAUTION] does not mean spotted - just means you're about to be.

If you're just walking in the wasteland, hit Rb (or whatever triggers your VATS) periodically as you walk - like pinging with radar - if there's anything within VATS range in the direction you're facing, it'll activate - if not, you're alone.

Again, high PER is everything - with a PER of 1, pretty much everything will be on top of you before you know it's there.

As for killing them, well, not a lot can take a stealthy .308 sniper round to the head. My method for multiples is snipe out the first one and try to fade back till they lose me, then rinse and repeat. I have a Chameleon chest piece, tho, so it's a little easier for me, but high Stealth and Shadowed armor pieces will do very well also. But if they do spot me and come running, I try to guide them over a frag mine while swapping out to a shotty - then it's both barrels to the head at point-blank range and dodge around like an idiot waiting for AP to regenerate (you can take free-aim shots in the meantime, but if ammo is scarce then a wall of lead isn't a viable option). Worst case scenario is whip out the .38 or the 10mm and blaze away.

Another good one is hit 'em in the legs - can't run, can't chase you down. Fade back until they lose you and repeat.

Also, watch their patrol routes - ofen they will move away from each other can you can take one or two down without the others noticing (or being able to find you even if they do).

Last but not least, upgrade your guns. You already know this, but if you've been neglecting it, stop. The bad guys carry upgraded guns, so even if you don't have the Gun Nut perks you can still strip mods from their weapons and add them to your own.

BTW, obviously I use a sniper build - if you're more the resiliant, heavy-weapon user, then Ghouls go down pretty easily to full-auto fire - just wait for them to get close and give 'em the whole mag.

For the tougher Ghouls, like Glowing Ones, aim for the legs. Once you pop a leg off, they're pretty much helpless.

For the ghouls it is best to take out their legs and back track and then it becomes much easier to take them out.

If you can, grab a combat shotgun and increase the magazine size. Makes short work of them.

upgrade all your armor and weapons, kill the ghouls from distance, use grenades, mines when they come closer, use a shotgun, upgrade the shotgun to shoot automatic, aim for the head, use the radaway, for the ghouls are radioactive

I found an automatic .38 pipe pistol (w/drum mag) to be useful against ghouls at the start. Plenty of bullets to throw in their direction as they jump all over the place. Much easier than trying to land single shots on them.

Also, it gave me something to do with the vast amounts of .38 ammo I had.

10mm Pistol upgraded and a shotgun upgraded will make short work of them but until you get them upgraded those weapons are pretty worthless. I got all happy at one point when I found some energy weapons, but it turns out they are no better, and in a lot of cases worse, than traditional weapons until you can upgrade them. And it takes longer to upgrade energy weapons because of the perks you need.

Trick is, getting everything you need and leveling up to be able to upgrade those weapons. I found that to be the hard part. I consider myself an avid gamer and I found it impossible to play with the game set to normal. I just couldn't find what I needed without getting killed 10 times in a row and having to reload a save to keep trying.

If you are playing on normal it seems as though you must have a companion with you. I chose to bring Piper.

The other thing is, VATS takes so long to load that you have to open it up while they are far enough away, but if you do it too far and your weapon doesn't have the range then VATS is useless. Especially with Feral's because they lunge at you the closer they get and most of the time I can't get VATS to focus on them well enough.

I'm finding Fallout 4 to be much more challenging than the rest of the series. Not complaining at all, just saying it seems we have to approach combat a bit differently.

If you are fast enough, melee + blocking works very well. Feral ghouls have very weak limbs and usually only takes one or two good strikes to cute off an arm or both (or even a leg). But gotta be quick with blocking and learn to bait feral ghouls into a line so you can fight one at a time.

Melee is especially good for higher level ones that takes a while to kill. Since it doesn't take too long to cut off their arms, they become basically useless in combat (they might still attempt to headbutt you but it's hard for them to do so).

However, if out in the open? Keep your distance and snipe a few out at a time while moving around (Unless you have a silencer).

If you want to upgrade energy weapon, go kill some gunners and collect theirs.

Fun little tip: When upgrading (or downgrading) a weapon, the previous part is turned into a "Mod" which will be in your inventory. Mods can be applied to any other weapon for free afterwards and doesn't require the perks. Meaning, if you want an upgrade that requires "Science: 4" while you only have "Science: 1"... Just find it on a weapon and then downgrade that weapon so you get it as a mod and can then apply it to your own.

This is literally how I tend to upgrade most of my stuff honestly. Same thing goes for Armor too.

Another fun little tip: ALL Default Armor pieces costs nothing to make so you can literally stack up on Armor Mods by picking up armor and taking them to an Armor Workbench and simply just remove their upgrades for later use. Certain Weapon Upgrades works the same as well (mostly Muzzles).

A lot of melee weapons are pretty slow though, and blocking has a refractory period. I'm sure with some fast knife action one can block and perform surgery at the same time

I use a pistol. High fire rate for taking down the legs and doesn't use a lot of action points. It can take up to 3 shots to kill one ghoul so I get the legs on a few of them and come back for head shots when they are crawling.

I use my modded Deliverer pistol on them. Fast fire rate and 77 dmg.

Go for the legs, even a few random shots at the legs can cripple. I find taking out a leg absolutely essential for handling Withering and Reaver types.

Mototovs can be very effective for thinning out the weaker ones as well as crippling others.

Keep moving and watch your back.

Handling Feral Ghouls,

Molotov Cocktails, are really amazing for killing off Ghouls, especially if you land the glass container on the ghoul...Remember the glass breaks right away as opposed to frag grenades that take time to explode.

Shotguns can cause stagger without investment into perks, especially if you shoot them in the limbs...Head Shots can kill right away.

If they get in close remember that their attack tends to carry them just behind you so if your putting points into "Bash Perk" like I do you either want to time your bash so that its before they are actually in your face or you want to spin around while bashing so that you actually hit them as uh they tend to try to get behind you.

Ghouls tend to fall down to the ground on the initial Sprint attack, the momentum puts them directly on the ground behind you.

Ghouls tend to stumble a lot on the approach, aim low.

Bloody Mess, is a great perk to have as it can cause body parts to explode...Remember ghouls are less effective when missing their arms/legs.

Bash can sometimes "cripple" or cause limb explosion on Ghouls.

Commando and Steady Aim are mandatory for Automatic Weapons in my book anyway and can make short work of Ghouls.

Companions,

Codsworth is amazing at making short work of Ghouls, his buzzsaw blade removes parts every sweep and his flame thrower can set a few on fire in a single blast. If you direct him to attack ghouls quickly enough he can dispatch an entire pack in a very short frame of time on his own.

Dogmeat is nice because unlike most companions he tends to act very quickly on his own, so he starts attacking quickly without issues.

Preston...Uh right...uh I haven't found anything he is good for yet.

They can climb through windows? Good grief, they're worst than the Reavers on Serenity!

I've come across some that hang odd the back of things and climb over when you approach and others that drop from ceiliing holes, crawl out of vents and even drainage holes.

Another small warning with glowing ones, if you see them use there aoe radiation attack, keep a eye out for any dead ghouls around, as the attack can literally bring them back from the dead.

Electrified Serrated Chinese Officers Sword. Seriously, you can go toe to toe with most things in the game with it.

Feral Ghouls go down in like one hit, you can carve up Supermutants, Radscorpions, Raiders, Assaultrons with ease. I tried it on a Deathclaw that surprised me and yep, it got spliced and diced. Add your Power Armor to the mix and laugh like a ninja robotic maniac.

I always use melee on a group of ghouls. Its just important to time your strikes so you hit them before they "launch" at you, otherwise they stagger you and eat you up :( and blocking ofcourse. Ghouls are fragile and easy to kill but its their staggering effect thats dangerous

I found that with my sneaky character ghouls stand no chance against my silenced 10mm with the combination of Ninja, Sneak and Mister Sandman. As creatures they generally have terrible Perception, so staying low will help.

Swords or Machetes are amazing. I recommend going to this mining quarry that is far East from Sanctuary when you're around level 20ish. You'll have to go through a lot of Raiders then some ghouls but at the end, in a water pit, is a pretty badass Machete that does the same damage as a sword (+ same bleeding damage) AND does extra poison damage... It's pretty wicked.
