I've been a fan of Godzilla since my childhood, and I have to say, this film did Godzilla so much justice in comparison to the poor attempt that was the 1998 film. Seeing Godzilla appear again looking near similar to Toho's Godzilla and sounding just like him was just fantastic. What I care about most is that they got Godzilla right and it restored my faith in the US having a go at Godzilla.
Godzilla aside (strange enough to say that in a Godzilla movie), the movie was good. It had the usual moronic moments in disaster movies where the characters will act stupid and continuously stare at the monsters instead of running, but I enjoyed it. Two issues I had with this film were the characters themselves and a little too much focus put on them. The characters in the movie seemed too one dimensional to really care about them, save Bryan Cranston of course, and I suppose Ken Watanabe. When I say they had too much focus, I refer to the parts where Godzilla is making his appearance but then the film constantly cuts back to the characters and its so annoying, especially during the final fight where it is interrupted so much by the characters. Godzilla movies aren't necessary all about Godzilla and they've always had some sort of focus on the characters, but I think this movie really over did it.
Spoiler It also svcks that Bryan Cranston's screen time in this movie is cut short when he is killed off rather early. It's probably not wise to kill off the only actor people care about, but we got stuck with Kick-Ass. I agree with the LoneRanger as well. I was okay with MUTO but I would have much preferred they used classic Toho monsters. I thought a monster like Gigan would have been great here. I would hope that if they plan on doing more Godzilla films they do something for the fans and bring in some favorites. Gigan, King Ghidorah, Mechagodzilla, or even Destoroyah.
