No not like that!
Anyone tried out auto-fire weapons? They seems like a waste of bullets, bad for steath, to slow for Crit Banking.
Still I am curious (spelling?), any idea how to build an Auto based hero? Any perks besides Commando and gun? nuts

In past Fallout Games, every time I used an Automatic Weapon I just ended up wasting bullets. Its a lot of fun though. I think if you were mod in tighter spread on the guns it might be better. I tended to use automatic weapons as something fun, not something useful. I have not tried them in this game, but in NV, I had tons of 5.56, so I would use the Machine Gun from that game occasionally. I would certainly use up my ammo though.
There is a reason most assault weapons have a 3 shot setting that send out 3 bullets per trigger pull.
I use an Automatic Pipe Rifle with Silencer. If you grab the Ninja and Sandman perks and make sure your hits are stealth hits, it becomes somewhat powerful. I don't even have Commando, and I use the Pipe Rifle at lvl 44. If you get spotted you're screwed, though, and will definitely need the Commando perk (which would be recommended anyway if you go that route, I'm just trying out stuff and picked Rifleman instead).
Keep it a .38 and you'll have plenty of ammo, forever, and deliver those stealth hits in short bursts. It's a lot of fun to snipe from a distance with an automatic =)
Actually you can - look up the CBBE mod.
I use automatic weapons; specifically non-legendary 10mm auto pistol and .38 auto pipe rifle. Those are primary weapons for my level 70 character.
I typically do short controlled bursts rather than fully unloading the clip / drum unless the enemy is quickly closing the distance to me. Then I go full auto while trying to control recoil with my mouse. Controlling recoil with a controller may be a bit more difficult though. I use the .38 auto pipe rifle to (reflex sight) to snipe at enemies that are no so far away that I need to use my .45 / .308 sniper rifles.
Automatics are underpowered to the point of uselessness in this game. The fact that they do less damage is nuts, and is IMO the lazy balance choice. They should do the same damage and be balanced by their recoil.
I have! It's decent with the perk, and if you just take short concentrated bursts rather than spraying bullets everywhere you can hit more and save on ammo.
Definitely get the scrounger perk too.
Silenced Tommy gun with a full stealth build does a lot of dps. It shines, obviously, with low armor mobs you encounter just traveling around. You will still need a high damage weapon to punch through the tougher ones but its good as a secondary weapon even if you don't pick up commando. I will more then likely pick up all the commando perks after I grind through some other ones I want.
Depend on how much you use them, and yes if you have lots of perks in rifleman and none in commando the full auto looks even weaker. I use them against groups or bosses, spray and pray is very good and so fun to use against pack of ghouls.
I originally thought it would simply be a waste of bullets as each shot does less and you miss more often innately by firing full auto. However, I started a new character with scrounger (find more ammo) and as long as you use a diverse array of weapons (I use .45, 5.56, 10mm, and fusion cell) it's fine and quite fun.
My end build is going to be pain train because I want to try running people over with power armor, steady aim - str hip fire accuracy bonus, basher - once I get close if they are melee, and then I'll hip-fire my automatic weapons if enemies try to run away. So far it's been a lot of fun just using auto weapons, but I can't wait to see it with pain train.
Silencers offer the best recoil reduction and automatic rifles with all upgrades work just fine firing with a scope so I don't see why you couldn't have a stealth build with commando.
Yep. Fully modded and silenced auto weapons plus Commando perk in stealth mode rocks. Overseer's Guardian? Good as a missile launcher for stopping power. Especially in VATS. I find generally using automatics without VATS will blow a lot of ammo, wasting much of it with the recoil. You can limit that some with careful, short, well aimed bursts... but VATS is far more effective and conservative. Still, if you've got plenty of ammo or don't mind buying extra, the Rambo commando style is certainly fun. While the automatic weapons do less damage per projectile, do the math- each VATS burst which hits puts 3 bullets into the target, versus 1 bullet with single-shot weapons. Factor in any legendary mod effects, like explosive or bleeding, etc., and auto weapons can blow single shot ones out of the water for damage output, if you perked right. Oh, and factor in all the stealth sneak-attack crit bonuses too, if you grabbed them- that first burst out of stealth is a real killer.
Ah, forgot one other great bonus of the Commando perk- it works equally with pistols or rifles of all kinds- so you don't have to choose between Rifleman or Gunslinger. One perk to rule them all.
VATS gives you 3-shot bursts. Unless you don't use it, in which case, nevermind.
It actually does more DPS because of fire rate, so your only concern would be ammunition. Considering you can use so many different types of automatic weapons it shouldn't be hard keep enough ammo on hand, especially with scrounger perk.
I'm not saying it's better than rifleman/gunslinger, but it's something different and it's still a lot of fun. I've already made a rifleman and gunslinger and am now trying commando.
I'm playing commando now. I do have a sniper rifle, but everything else is full auto.
I rely heavily on Commando and Gun Nut. I keep about four full auto guns fully upgraded best I can that all use different ammo. Then when at home I leave with the one with the most ammo available.
Yes ammo can be a problem, though I've yet to actually run out of ammo. I suppose the perk to get you more ammo in loot would help (I don't use it). The biggest help is learning to shoot in small burst. Just holding the trigger you are going to waste half your ammo.
My current character is into automatic weapons, and doesn't even have rifleman or gunslinger perks at level 22. All the weapons I use are modded to the best of my ability, and I have level 3 ninja. I carry different weapons depending on my ammo supply. I use a full auto assault rifle (when I can find enough ammo), an automatic combat shotgun, an automatic silenced 10mm pistol with an advanced receiver, a hardened armor piercing silenced.308 pistol with a medium scope, and for varmints like radroaches and bloatflies I use a powerful automatic muzzled .38 pipe pistol. I also carry a non-automatic legendary "Crippler" 10mm pistol for killing wounded enemies who can't fight anymore. Ghouls, usually.
I don't like that the automatic generally does less damage per round in this game, but I'm not finding it to be an issue. Short controlled bursts starting at the knee will put at least 3 rounds into the target, and since my receivers are all powerful auto or better, 3 rounds from them does considerable damage.
Using VATS does indeed conserve ammo, but I usually only use VATS if I have multiple targets, like... 3 bloatflies for instance.
I'm finding it awkward keeping up with ammo needs though. I can afford to buy ammo, but I rarely see 5.56 ammo for sale (I'm hoping it gets more common at higher levels some where above level 22) I always have some 1500 rounds of .38, but of course that is my weakest weapon.
...and then there are instances that are devastating to the ammo supply. For instance, I was under attack by a gaggle of ghouls, one of which I knew was Legendary and the others were a mix. My first thought was to use VATS but I didn't, because it occurred to me that the most I could target with any hope of taking out the ones I targeted was perhaps three, and while I was in VATS the others would all be on me before I was done shooting the original targets.
So, rather than use VATS, I started a fighting retreat action, moving backward while firing into the crowd with my assault rifle. I survived, only got slightly dinged by the final ghoul, killed them all but... I went through my last 135 rounds of 5.56 in the process. So, the rest of the time on that mission was spent carrying the assault rifle with me, but being unable to use it. Frustrating when I encountered numerous supermutants, eh?
All in all though, I think the auto weapon play is more fun than the standard firing rates. When I run into a tenacious ghoul, I often use that .38 and just empty a full clip into him at point blank range. Oh, an that's the other thing about using a full auto weapon. If a ghoul or some such gets in your face close, the full burst will stagger him while it's being fired, so you have time to put 12 to 24 rounds into him before he can manage to hit you from 3 feet away. I don't reccomend that tactic with mutant suiciders though...
I'm finding automatic weapons are harder to succeed with, simply because the accuracy svcks in comparison to a well aimed single shot. You usually nail the first target, but after that it's anyone's game. What does work nicely, though, is opening every fight with a couple of well placed grenades and/or planting a mine in the line of fire. Injuring a mob with grenades makes it easier to just clean up with the automatic, and any sprinters will lose a leg to your mines. Most playstyles are viable only combined with another skill. Like Sniping + Sneak, Grenades + Automatic, Melee + Blitz, and I'm sure there are many more.
VATS or short controlled bursts, definitely not blazing away till the mag empties.
Plus, modify the weapon to reduce recoil and barrel jump.
Finally, be prepared to only engage targets at around the 100 range mark...much over that and they become a waste of ammo.
All that said though, they really only come into their own when they are either very accurate (such as a modded up .38 pipe version), or when they have DR reducing legendary effects. Get hold of an assault rifle with DR reducing effect, and you'll never need to drop it.
I suppose if you're playing survival, where everything is a bullet sponge, that would matter more. Any other setting, it doesn't, in actual practice.
You don't even need that. Although when a guy or girl goes in commando while wearing pants or long dresses, it is pointless.
