So... I'm going to hell..

Post » Sat Apr 02, 2011 3:18 am

So. A few days ago I came across a guy on a barter//selling website, who was selling some computer stuff, and taking "donations" for Christan Computers For Kids. I had three monitors, all unused, all taking up more space than I wanted, so I replied to him and offered to give him two of the monitors. Since one was worth about $80 more than the two I gave away, I asked him if he would trade some 5.1 surround sound headphones he had up for sale for them. However these were his "personal" items he was selling, so he said no deal.

So he came by the other day, to pick up the monitors (I ended up giving him the third as well), and we had got to talking about computers and what not. (He's an old GM worker, laid off. One of these guys who partied hard, done his drugs and whatnot. Now he's a born again christian, trying to get into heaven, if such a place exists). He was telling me about the charity he was doing, and he talked about a Laptop he was giving to a boy in a wheelchair, but it wasn't working, so I told him Icould take a look at it, and see if I could fix it. (The female port for the power adapter was also loose, which I soldered back in for him.). Anyways, I learned that the HDD was damaged, and the computer wouldn't boot past the windows logo, it blue screened and instantly restarted. So I e-mailed him, and he dropped by again and he gave me the windows disk so I could run fdisk and fix it. So we got to talking again, and he left with some old DVD burners, writers, floppies, and two older pairs of 2.1 speakers that I no longer have use for. Same with some sound and video cards. During the conversation, he said he really appreciated what I was doing, and said "You know what. The family i'm giving another computer too was going to get those headphones, because I couldn't find speakers for them. But now, I am going to give you those headphones free of charge, a razer mousepad, and I can get you wholesale deals on anything for computers." (He used to have his own computer store).

Now, I managed to completely fix the laptop, went out of my way a little to get some RAM for it from other people on forums, who wanted to donate it, and it's now working. It's an old 2003 Compaq laptop. Not the best but, it's running, decently, and I am hoping the kid in the wheelchair gets some nice use out of it.

Now I feel like i'm going to hell because I'm excited as hell i'm getting those Headphones for doing something good. -_-

It all boils down to did you do it for the kids or for the headphones. And i doubt you'll go to hell for receiving headphones for fixing a laptop for a disabled boy.

I personally wouldn't take the headphones. I'm willing to bet that the child is much less fortunate then you, and that you are already much better equipped than him.

So basically, you helped someone out, a lot, and he decided to pay you back, and now you feel guilty. Nice logic. I'd take the headset and feel pretty happy about it.

You might also consider it was divine providence that you ended up with those headphones. One good deed deserves another, karma goes around, etc. Don't sweat it. :)

On a more secular note, you should feel good about all that stuff you did, not worrying about people showing their gratitude as a result! :D

I...don't see how this would land you a spot in hell, the guy just wants to reward you for putting in the effort to fix a laptop for a disabled kid after you already donated 3 monitors. The guy probably felt you deserve some compensation for doing some good deeds. And hey, from what you said in your story, you were doing this out of good will.

It's not like you took the laptop, sold it on e-Bay and kept the money.

Well, I didn't know I was getting the headphones, until he offered.

That's how god works. Do something nice, feel bad for it. rofl.

I tried saying i'd buy them (because he was just going to add them because there was no speakers. But I gave him a couple pairs), but he kept insisting I take them, so I said fine.

Im so in! Can I have my own minion of death?

I was always raised to not accept gifts, or free stuff. Call it morals or whatever. IT always makes me feel awkward lmao.

Ok...I guess this thread is already close to being closed due to Religious discussion being prohibited, but I will add this:

Don't feel bad at all! You did some great things for these kids, and he decided to reward you! It's positively Christian! You live for Jesus, how He would want you to live, and you're rewarded with a place in Heaven...it's basically what you did, but on a much Greater level!

If you're not religious, and don't believe in 'this crap', then think of it this way...it's positively Newtonian. Every action is matched with an equal reaction...do a good deed, and something good will happen to you ^_^

Whatever you believe, doing a few good deeds is never going to get you into a bad place with the big man...trust me :)

Well the discussion isn't based on religion. It just happens to have a small part on my story. I don't believe in heaven or hell persay, but it's just a way of me saying I feel bad for what I did, because I shouldn't be rewarded for doing something like this. Lol

I wanna be excited cause i'v needed a pair of headphones. But I can live with regular 5.1 speakers instead of a head.

Lmao. Well in this day and age, you never can tell when soldering and connecting wires.

Yeah, you're going to hell (if such a place exists.)

Thing is, you didn't do what you did to obtain the headphones, you genuinely did it to help out those less fortunate than you. That counts as a good deed in my book. Take the headphones and do it with a clear conscience. It's not very common these days to find someone as willing as you've been to help, and he's just wanting to show his appreciation.

Unless of course you've been holding back the truth, an it was agreed that you'd help in exchange for the headphones. In that case, save me a spot by the bar...
