Going on a VATS-free diet

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 2:41 am

I hate VATS.

With that out of the way, I've downloaded the No VATS mod, and will perhaps try that. However, I'd like to go VATS-free, and be able to use an overhaul (say, FWE or ART). Doable? Wise?

I also dislike other kinds of "magic" in Fallout (e.g., Bullet Time). Each to their own, of course, but if I wanted to play The Matrix... well, yeah.

Naturally, the question is, what to do with all those Action Points. There's sprinting - might be doing a lot of that! :D Anything else, courtesy of mods?

Any other good harsh, realistic, FPS-style mods/tweaks, while I'm about this?

Thanks in advance.

first - you don't have to use these powers - many assign them to hard to get to keys so as to make their use possible in a pinch, but not easy or exploitable.

You could also try http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=15339 for using action points.

I'm a big fan of FWE - I assigned bullet time to my space bar and vats over at key L. I use Bullet time quite a bit and the sprint power - both eat action points a lot. And FWE has settings to require the use of speed (or the ingame equivalent) in order to use bullet time. I've advocated for vats to only be used in power armor (computerized targeting) - but no modder liked the idea.

I know. But their very presence offends me. :flamethrower: Well, a bit. :P

Thanks, I'll check it out.

I too like FWE... in some ways. But personal visions vary - who'da thunk it? :D

As for the power armour idea - *I* like it! Any chance of seeing that happen? Anyone...? :icecream:

I don`t use vats or the AP thing. I don`t use Fast travel either. I had to use a Mod to resist the temptation of Fast travel, but I found Vats easy to resist, no need for a Mod. For me, VATS takes away from the true enjoyable (for me) element of fighting and shooting at range in a realistic manner. It has never made the game harder inmho.I really have no need to see a zoom shot of what my bullet does or a percentile hit or even the cinematic view, all superfluous. One advantage of not using VATs is that I make a lot of cash from selling Jet.

FWE has been very good as it allows you to make your FO3 world VERY harsh if you set the settings so. I had it so it took me ages just to level up (slow XP gain), I even started with LESS points than default -although that was a slight mistake on my part, (made me very average indeed) but I decided to live with it. It wasn`t so bad, I just had to wait longer before I could picks locks or repair and to be really careful what I put my main skills on. I found medical skills and small arms gunnery were essential skills to build early on especially since it was now easy to bust my body parts and needed lots of in field medical care. Busting a head or arm really affects your gunnery and aim abilities. Busting your feet can stop you running which is bad when you don`t use FT and need to move quick in a fight.

Great stuff, but only for some, as you say, all to their own.

(edited due to above edit) :)

I'm currently using FWE, plus a bunch of other "hardcoe" stuff, but considering switching to ART instead.

And yes, I no longer use fast travel or VATS (or Bullet Time) as well. Or drugs. :P But that does contribute to my character swimming in caps. And Stimpacks (sigh). Which is just one of the reasons I might try ART, actually.

FWE has turned out *way* too easy, even when using other immersion/gameplay mods and stuff. I mean, by about level 5 or so, having thousands of caps, and literally hundreds of stimpacks is just bizarre.

Among other things.

But, for those who like FWE as is, great!

I'm simply looking for a harsh, FPS/RPG hybrid style experience. With symmetry, what's more - what they can do, I can do, and vice versa. Where that even makes sense, of course! :D

Yea, sorry about that, my internet did something strange...

I don`t understand how you can find FWE too easy. You can`t have adjusted your game settings at all. On my settings the game is incredibly slow going. Making money is a nightmare (again you need to set the FWE ingame setting to `harsh`). I am level 8 and I have only just made 2000 caps. I still have far less than I need. I can`t carry loads of stuff because again, I set strength settings to be a little less forgiving, et, etc. Every battle is pretty much a real fight and I often take a Companion for back up. There are loads and loads of configs.

there`s NO WAY you`d be doing that well if you had configured the FWE settings to Harsh.

ps. I also run the FWE Overhaul which ads 1st person views to guns etc. See the Mod screenshot thread for pics.

We will have to agree to disagree, it would seem. ;)

I've heard similar things about FCOM, and other "hard" Oblivion mods. And I've posted similar counter-claims. Sometimes, I've even "gotten away with it"! Other times, yeah, people are either less than believing, or less than gracious about it. Or both.

It could be that I've overplayed both games, and know some of the little tricks and foibles all too well. Or I'm lucky. I don't know. Or care. :P

Point is, I'd like a different experience. And I'm beginning to think ART sans VATS could be a good starting point.

Whatever. It just don`t make sense to me and I`m a pretty hardcoe player. You also gave the impression you hadn`t used FWE before (in your posts), but now suddenly your level 5 with thousands of caps? And your posts were all today.

Hmmmm.

FWE easy?

Oh it is definitely all about the settings - most of which now include the softy settings because many complained it was too hard.

My current playthrough - level 15 and never enough stimpacks - I'm always trying to scrounge those up.

Then also FWE with Imps immersive needs - itself offering harsh settings for food and water.
