Going on 20 Years.

Post » Tue Sep 23, 2014 12:06 pm

Next month i'll be 20 years old, it may just be sleep depravity speaking, but its hard to grasp really.

20 years, 1/5 a century and i lived it, good and bad, i am me, and its difficult to explain the strangness of considering myself 20.

How do you guys feel about being your age?

Did you ever feel a strangness considering yourself a particular age?

Edit: This topic is not meant to be about mortality, though it does go hand in hand, i had intended it to be about things like what happened to you during your life, and what has happened around you, and the world, in that time.

I don't really think about my age. I rarely even look at myself in the mirror any more.

It's scary, but I'm slowly coming to grips with my age and mortality, but that doesn't mean it's any easier, it's just not as frightening to bear.

I am the same way, but someone brought up my birthday next month and i offhand said i would be 20, then i really thought about what that meant, 20 years on this earth, it doesnt seem real.

And i dont mean the mortality of it all, that doesnt phase me as of yet, but that amount of time has pass, and what have i to show for it?

Hmm i may be coming to grips with a problem i have with myself, maybe i feel like those 20 years could have been done better.

Every time I walk up and down the stairs in my house, there are two sounds of creaking: from the wood stairs and from parts in my body.

But I don't mind. Unlike others, I don't fear death, so I just live like I want to.

If eating Doritos covered with cheese deep fried to a tasty goodness ends up being the death of me, so be it.

I just don't want to die being mauled to death by a poodle. That would be embarrassing.

We all have to die, might just as well die of something we enjoy eh? :D

I am over half a century at this point. My health isn't the best, and things don't work as well as they once did... but, I can STILL enjoy life.

I have edited my original post to better clarify my intent for the thread, think of it as reflecting.

I feel fifty years older than I actually am. It feels wrong, being this age, for some reason.

Being my age feels about right. The strange thing is that I was 13 just yesterday, so tomorrow I'll probably wake up being 43. I'd like to think it won't take my by surprise, but y'know.

Congrats, in one year you will be 21, just drink carefully. I'm assuming you are in the US where our legal drinking age is 21.

I just turned 21 in the summer, however I don't let age bother me because I'm immortal.

When I was i high school (early 80's), I thought a few times about "the millennium." I'd think about being 37 when that time hit. It was so far away and unfathomable to me. I'd try to think about what I would be doing at that time. When it finally happened, I was kind of disappointed :)

I did tease my son when he turned 25 a few years back. I'd ask him, "How does it feel living "a quarter of a century?" He would just look at me with that "Really, Dad?" look he has perfected :)

I'm going to be 19 in a few months and it feels really strange. In fact I went to buy a game from a store yesterday and the guy thought I was only 15 years old. It kinda surprised me, but when I grow my hair out I look a lot younger than I am. It was pretty amusing now that I think about it.

Turning 20 is nothing to worry about, just like turning 18 or 19 or 21.

I think what people fear or worry about is changes in their life like starting a family, or starting college or high school or a new job.

I feel fine about my age, I don't think I'll ever grow up (I'll grow older though). And I am not worried about turning 22 or any other age.

I think it's weird however to imagine myself as a 70 year old, but again that is mainly due to changes and things in my life. I mean, by that time I may have children and grandchildren. But aging in and of itself is not any worry or consern of mine.

I turned 24 at the beginning of the year and I remember turning 20. When family members I don't see as often woul ask how old I am now they were always seemingly shocked and to be honest I was just as shocked as they were.

Some of the time I don't even believe in death. (Hey the world is strange enough as it is who knows) Most of the time I do though and it's a pretty terrifying thought.

I feel younger than my age... I certainly don't feel like an advlt anyway

Not gonna lie death scares me to no end so I largely blank out my age.

I just hope research in gerontology really progresses soon :)

But sincerely having said all of that, us humans being here able to enjoy and comprehend the complexities of life is nothing short of astonishing.

I turned 20 this summer. it feels about right. While i do not fear death, i do fear growing old only to be dependent on others for even the most basic stuff. I am currently in training to become a nurse, so i meet alot of people like that.

The scariest thing thou, is being deprived of my ability to take care of myself at young age. I once met a man in a hospital, possibly in his 40s, who could move only his eyes. he could not even speak... i would choose death over imprisonment in my own body.

I remember feeling that way myself when it happened to me. I've since reached 50, though.

I'm almost 50 and I love it. Kids are grown up and out of school and I have a steady income in a job that I've been in for a long time. Same with the wife.

Now I have all sorts of time on my hands. Went to Tai Chi class yesterday morning, and after some errands spent 4 hours playing Fallout 3. :fallout:

If only I could be 20 years old again...well, that was more than 20 years ago. Funny, it doesn't seem like it's been that long ago now. People grow up, get on with their lives, and before you know it half of it is already gone. Enjoy it while it lasts, but don't take it for granted.

I made alot of mistakes from my 20's clear through to my mid 30's, and if I could, I'd certainly be rethinking many of my choices from back then. Can't say I'm ashamed of my youth, but I do have some regrets, as do all of us here, I'm sure. Oh well, you live and you learn. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, I sure did.

As for death, after my accident about 8 or nine years ago, death doesn't scare me much anymore. One more inch away and I would've severed an artery (plate glass window). Home alone and in my basemant, I would've bled out then and there...with no one who would hear my cries for help.

I know the opposite feeling. I'm almost turning 19 now too and most of the time people think I'm older than that. I don't know why, really. I still have that nice little babyface with no facial hair at all except for my ugly moustache (which I shave off every other day). I barely buy new clothes, and the shirts I wear are 1 or 2 years old, so my clothes don't really make me look older.

As for feeling old: it is quite funny. When I was 10 or so, I really looked up to kids in highschool. When I entered highschool, I discovered that they aren't so different after all. I am now in college and feel the same way. We're still kids with a lot to learn. I still derp around a lot with my friends. I think moving out of your parents house will make a huge difference. Still have to find a room though, because there's a shortage for rooms.

As for mortality, I'm not afraid to die. Everyone has to die at one point. I just hope my parents and grandparents die first, because outliving your children is a cruel fate IMO.

I've lost track of my age a few times. I remember a few years back i was at my granparent's farm after not seeing them for awhile and my grandma asks how old I am. All i said is "uhhh, i think i'm 21. Yeah, im 21." and my friend who is like 2 weeks older then me was there and was like "uh dude, we turn 23 in a couple months". Then i was like, oh yeah, I'm almost 23 now.

I'm only 25 now, so i can imagine how bad it will get in my 30's and 40s (assuming that i make it that far).
