Gold or Caps 2.0

Post » Tue Sep 08, 2009 9:12 pm

A continuation of the thread http://www.gamesas.com/bgsforums/index.php?showtopic=1075617 Gold VS Caps.

So far people have argued they like caps more than gold, gold should be in the game because it used and fallout 2, and a lot of people like the idea of poker chips! This time I remade the poll to include chips! Some people like the idea of using different currencies with a currency exchange system, I'd also like to add there were casino chips in fallout 2, but they weren't used as currency!

So what do you like more Caps, Gold, or Poker Chips?

They should use gold because NCR was using it. I would like to see a currency exchange. Caps at the bottom, chips only used in casinos, and gold coins worth the most. I have been playing fallout two lately and notice while in New Reno the people were calling the coins "chips." They could do that again for Vegas, just have the people call their money "chips" even when it is really gold coins.

If the chips weren't an option, I'd say caps. Caps're a better choice for money over gold for two reasons. One, there's TONS of them after the way, considering how much Nuka-Cola the pre-war population drank, and gold is just too scares to be used all over the country. Second, its pretty much impossible to counterfit 'em, unless you've got the proper factory, which few can claim to own. But considering its Vegas, I gotta go with chips.

No slot machine token option? Poker isn't the only form of gambling in Las Vegas you know...

Again, Slot tokens are more durable and more closely resemble coins...which might appease the gold NCR coin crowd.

Need I bother pointing out that there were at one time several mints operating on the west coast, and in the old west era, it wasn't uncommon to find local mints for producing metal coins. Although actual gold might not be that common, the creation of coins and bank notes is absolutely possible, and would be downright insulting to suggest otherwise since even ancient cultures knew how to make coins.

Although chips might be more fun for the sake of local culture, as the west coast has recovered far more than east coast, coins of some sort would be the more realistic and lore supported answer.

Slot machines don't really use tokens any more. Remember the famous string trick for an unlimited amount of credits? The Vegas slot machines of today use cards, or only accept dollar bills. I mean New Vegas based off of an older version of Vegas, a 50's version, but they don't use slot tokens anymore, not that its a bad idea or anything just saying.

No kidding...realistically people would be melting down simple medal objects almost immediately. Like lead.

With that said why cannot someone create a currency poll that includes coins, chips, caps, slaves, AND AN EXCHANGE SYSTEM option?

I mean...I could...but you know....

I worked as security on a casino boat a few years ago and it still used tokens for the slots, and it was a fairly large chain with locations in several states...both land based and on boats. I will never forget escorting the slot attendants to the machines with the full bags or the amount of gunk that accumulates on the tokens...bleh. Thankfully I didn't have to touch the tokens...lol.

Vegas has gone more electronic these days, I haven't been to a single casino where they use tokens and I live in Vegas! I play slots when I get bored, like black jack and poker. But I don't doubt you in the least bit, and I'm sure a few places probably do still use them. A boat would be understandable to use a Token system and older slot machines because its on a boat and not a building. Not even the slots at the gas stations use tokens here, they're all electronic!

But anyways back to the discussion...

Dont forget that this is the future Vegas people from the 50s imagined it to be, so Im sure we'll see both chips and tokens in the Casinos. As for the whole Gold vs Caps debate, I voted Caps because I love the idea of them being the currency. But seeing as though Vegas is more organised and the NCR is there, I wouldnt be surprised if we see gold.

Chips would make sense lore wise for the reason similar to why caps were used in the first place; a limited common item that people gathered after the bombs dropped, in use of trade for items from traders. Poker chips would be something common and limited to the people of Vegas but if chips are to be used it wouldn't make much sense unless the chips have been used shortly after the bombs were dropped I'd don't think it'd make much sense if they used Caps or Gold at first and then switched to Chips since I'm sure alot of chips would be gone in in some way or another by now (salvaged for other things or just pushed away)
If they can do Chips without messing up the other lore the I think they should do Chips, other wise I'd want Caps

Well in fallout 2 the currency was gold, people figured out how to mine gold and turn it into a coin in which was used to trade all across Nothern California and parts of Northern Nevada. Some would argue that gold should be the currency because thats what fallout 2 left us off with, the capital wasteland is too far away to use their currency caps, while the towns in fallout 2 are way closer to southern Nevada, or New Vegas. Plus fallout 2 left of us with a plot that involved the NCR wanting to control the gold mining town redding which was having a conflict between choosing sides with the New Reno mob or the NCR. But at least people did figure out how to mine gold in the wastelands, gold mining is nothing new ancient people have been mining gold for centuries, so it is possible that people would figure out how to mine gold and smelt into coins. People have mining and smelting gold for centuries way before modern technology came along.

Anyways I think gold, chips, and caps are the best choices and the currencies I'd like to see in the game. Anything else would not fit in the game.

I voted gold, but I really like the idea of diffrent currency and consequences tied with it. For example, NCR accepts only gold, merchants in the Strip accept only chips and wandering merchants\caravans only barter for caps. It'd add a nice variety to the game.

Gold because of Fallout 2. The NCR isn't just going to switch to caps. This is only 40 years later.

Van Buren would have reintroduced Caps, for NCR's Gold Coins became next to worthless due to its war with the BoS...

Both gold and caps. With the economysystem made so that the merchants accept either or, depending on their locale and standpoint. With the setting being at a verge of an economical breakdown, a transition from caps to gold (due to the NCR presence, as they already used gold in Fallout 2). And both hard to come by and more appreciated in trading than looted gear, to make the currencies (and barter skill) more worthwhile. The merchants could even refuse to buy some stuff they already have in their inventory (or that they don't consider worth anything), to make things even more interesting.

I think Poker Chips should be another form of Pre-war money and caps should should remain the base currency, it just doesnt come across to me that ppl would still appreciate poker chips in the Fallout World
