Goldbrand and the protector of the Dragons?

Post » Mon Sep 06, 2010 2:20 am

"This magical Sword is almost a complete mystery. Thieves tell tales about its golden make and how it was actually forged by ancient dragons of the North. Their tales claim that it was given to a great knight who was sworn to protect the dragons. The Sword lends its wielder the ability to do fire damage on an enemy. Goldbrand has not been sighted in recent history and is said to be awaiting a worthy hero."

In another thread an individual placed this snippet from the imperial Library (Umbra 2nd page) and something hit me.

Any thoughts? Im at a bit of a lost because in Oblivion didn't Boethiah give you Goldbrand after finishing its Tourney? is there a chance we will have to deal with the *Protector* of the Dragons? can that be a metaphor? there a chance that a faction would side with the Antagonists?

Goldbrand was around long before the Hero Of Kvatch got it. The original owner was the "Protector of the Dragons". Maybe it was Talos/ Tiber Septim/ Ysmir.

I love this idea...when you could side with the Enclave in Fallout 3 it was like the evil plot taking over...I've always forever been good and I would like to do a playthrough otherwise.

Sooo.....k the Septims bloodline was of a people who could fight Dragons....but to protect them?.....and now the Dragons are coming to own everything......

Story is getting more epic as you think about it.

not withstanding the fact that this could all be misinterpretation of Goldbrand in the series, or personally as well. in addition the Septim line Farce and Dragons being bound in service to the empire could have been one massive Trap as well......I really need to play this story.

I dont know if Goldbrand was in Arena/Daggerfall, but its been a Daedric Artifact rewarded to the player after completing a quest for the Daedric Prince Boethiah in both Morrowind and Oblivion.

Ehhhhhhh....???

Anyways, the weapon was created for that purpose, but it has long since lost it. Nerevarine got it over 200 years ago and he never even saw a dragon. Pretty sure that oath only applied to the first knight. Pretty dumb on the part of the dragons to not add that in the terms&conditions

I'd say that the description of Goldbrand could possibly refer to the Drovakiin. But only if we stepped back in time to the creation of Goldbrand.

Its not.

When I read that book before attaining goldbrand in morrowind, I made it out to look like an epic golden sword...one with amazing amounts of detail and one with a considerably wide blade.

Once Oblivion rolled in I already set myself up for the same disappointing look...I was not surprised. Perhaps this time around, since it could have some sort of relevance to the story, or simply because Bethesda seems to be in the business of making things bigger and better -- maybe they'll turn it into an epic sword.

I think it's will still just be an epic sword,

But in the slim chance that it isn't I think it will be main quest related, in the way of either the antogonist wields it or it's used to slay dragons,

however I still think the plot of the game will be to create piece between the dragons and the people of skyrim, and both the dovahkiin and goldbrand and it's wielder will have great part in this. for good or for worse.

True, as long as we still get a flaming golden katana, I think people will be satisfied.

But it would be neat to be part of the main quest.

This is true, it was also the reward for Boethiah's quest in Morrowind. I don't know who the original owner was, but when the player got it in Morrowind and Oblivion, it obviously wasn't used to protect dragons, unless you want to take that as a metaphorical phrase meaning protecting the Empire. But if we go by that logic, then I see no reason to assume it couldn't be used against the dragons we're fighting anyway, since they don't seem to be working for the Empire's best interests. Though maybe Bethesda will play around with this and have it being held by someone who is helping the dragons, we haven't been given any reason to assume the dragons will have humanoid allies, mind you, but I could see Bethesda doing that, after all, the Mythic Dawn served as mortal servents for Mehrunes Dagon, and in Morrowind, we encountered Sixth House servants that had not been turned into horribly mutated monstrosities. More likely, though, it will simply be the reward for Boethia's quest, as it has been in the past.

When I read that book before attaining goldbrand in morrowind, I made it out to look like an epic golden sword...one with amazing amounts of detail and one with a considerably wide blade.

I've always found that Goldbrand looks rather underwhelming than you might expect an epic weapon to be, in both Morrowind and Oblivion, but honestly, I find a lot of the Daedric artifacts don't really look as impressive as you'd expect them to be. I mean, I'm not saying every sword should be an epic thing covered in runes and glowing jewels, but when your legendary artifacts with powerful enchantments somehow manage to look mundane compared to your high-end but non-unique equipment, you have a problem. Of course, they'll probably look better in Skyrim, but the shiny new engine can only enhance them so far if the design remains the same.

MK-{OmegaX} this is in Morrowind. In Oblivion the sword is daedric artifact, created probably from Boethia.

Thats what I'm not entirely sure about, most legendary artifacts have no master, (living or otherwise) and frequently phase in and out of existence and with the Lore behind Goldbrand, why not detail it just as Sanguine's rose was as well of Goldbrand really was the spawn of Boethia? methinks Goldbrand ended up with Boethia as Umbra ended up with Clavicus vile.
