good creatures addition mod?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 10:22 pm

I've been using Wildness to add creatures to my game, but the mod significantly affects my FPS. I am running a few mods, such as MCA, FPS optimiser for view distance, darker morrowind texture pack, but only Wilderness makes a real difference to my FPS. In balmora, my FPS goes from a minimum of 32 to 20.

I am not running MGE, it doesn't work properly, and im content without it.

I am wanting to know what is a decent creatures mod that won't affect my FPS as much. Is GIANTS a good one?

GIANTS is full of poor quality pirated models, at least that's the conclusion I usually hear, it's not really popular around here. What is popular and good however is Piratelord's Creatures.

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30563. There are more pictures of the new creatures http://www.pirates.retreat.btinternet.co.uk/Creatures.htm, but the download link there is broken.

It shouldn't affect FPS.

Add http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=2786 to that, and you should have plenty of new creatures to experience.

The mods mentioned by povuholo and pluto are indeed awesome, you can not go wrong with those. But there is also the old favorite from Gary Noonan. :)

No screenshots in that link unfortunately...but in my opinion it is really good.

EDIT: You do not need to download the required mod,(Worm God/Gary Noonans original version.) the v1.82 version is a full version that has been "improved" a bit so to speak.

I used Giants (Ultimate) for quite a while before switching to Creatures X. My advice is to skip directly to Creatures, you won't miss much.
Creatures X is much more balanced difficulty-wise and contains only good/excellent quality creature models.
Beware though, the Creatures mod will also edit the vanilla monsters to make them more unique (resistances, spells, etc).

As well as all the above I've used Mephisto's http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=Mods.Detail&id=1651 since forever...

Are you looking for a mod that adds hostile creatures or non-hostile creatures? You've gotten recommendations for both in this thread - and you may only be looking for one. I'll assume you're looking for a hostile creature mod.

But first, about framerates: all creature-adding mods will affect your framerate to some extent. How much they affect your framerate depends entirely on your computer. For instance, the Wilderness mod adds scripts to its creatures and Creatures X adds scripts to every creature in the world. If you have a lower-end computer and if you find yourself in a situation involving several creatures, your machine may well slow down significantly when playing these mods. A player with a faster CPU may not notice the extra load. It's all up to your machine.

Creatures is a good mod. However, I don't care for a number of the creatures and remove them when I use the mod. When using versions 7, 8 and 9 I experienced a noticeable framerate hit at times. I haven't used version 10 yet, so it's possible the scripts have been optimized for that version and that the mod runs a bit smoother nowadays.

Giants was Morrowind's first large-scale creature overhaul. In it you will see the first user-made creature model made for Morrowind (The Sprite). It's a pretty pretty sorry-looking thing to behold nowadays, but it was revolutionary in its time and a very exciting development. Giants is my own personal favorite creatures mod. I've never seen anything quite as beautiful as Giant's ghosts, illuminating the ground beneath them as they glide over the landscape at night. I get rid of Sprites and one or two other creatures when I play the mod.

http://www.elricm.com/nuke/html/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=getit&lid=3252 by m6n6m6 was the second major creature mod. Even today it is one of the larger, most extensive creature mods around. It is not played much nowadays but there is much to like about this mod. I will always remember the first time I saw a herd of Elephants grazing by a lake near Vivec. An awesome sight.

Morrowind Advanced is notable for being created by Wormgod, a Bethesda dev. After Giants, it is my favorite creature mod. It adds a few new creatures -including what I think is a pretty cool-looking Dragon - and beefs up vanilla creatures. The more recent version, as reworked by Stromgarde, does not impact my framerates.

In summary, based on my own experience, here is how I would rate the larger hostile creature-adding mods, from least taxing on FPS to most:
* Creature Pack
* Morrowind Advanced
* Creatures X
* Morrowind Additions
* Giants
* Wilderness

In addition to all that, here's a few smaller mods I've enjoyed:

Thanks for the mod links guys. I've been trying some out. I especially love the birds that are added to the game. It's nice to have something other than cliff racers in the skies!

I was after a mod that that adds hostile creatures, and adds some domesticated animals. I liked the farm animals and dogs, cats e.c.t added by Wilderness.
