Good Mods?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 11:30 am

So, so far I've been playing almost-vanilla. The only mod I use is a little patch the fixes a couple things. I want to do another play through, and I want to know what good mods there are. It doesn't matter what as long as it's fun and well done.

Also, if this matters, I have every DLC.

One mod a lot of people leave out is http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3729

Turn off all the autosaves in the game and just use this. It has saved me hours of backtracking due to forgetting to save AND doesn't rely on the buggy autosave code.

You also need http://fose.silverlock.org/ to make it work. FOSE is good to get anyway as some of the best mods rely on it.

Mandatory (for me) would be these:

Unofficial Patches (for game and DLCs)
CASM
DarnUI - as per Oblivion
ART *or* FWE - hm, (very) roughly equivalent to "TIE *or* OOO" for Oblivion...?
Possibly some other realism mods too... (like RKR, which i forgot to list first time 'round).
EVE
No Comments About blah, etc. (enough to cover the bases) - as per Oblivion
Dialogue Tweaks
An appearance overhaul or two of choice (e.g., Project Beauty HD)
4Aces (the lot @ HD)
Other graphics replacers, most just retex
Sound replacers / overhauls, to taste
DLC Refurbish (all)
More (and better) music and more (possibly better) radio music - this is mostly trivially easy to do yourself

... That probably covers the basics (for me, anyway). Though MMM is also quite fun, now I think of it.

edit: Oh, and a weather overhaul (e.g., Fellout) is essential.

What kind of game experiance are you looking for? That would make a difference on what mods you'd want to get.
A couple of my favorites are: FO3 Wanderes Edition and Mart's Mutant Mod. FO3 Wanderes Edition can make the game tougher to play. No more soaking up damage, mowing down your enemies, and useing a couple dozen stimpacks when your in combat. Stimpacks heal over time and are harder to come by. So basically this mod makes you actually have to use a degree of tactics while fighting. Weapons also do more damage and you dont have as much health on top of that. I've actually had to get companions to help me out in certain areas where before I'd mow everthing down with ease. FO3 Wanderers Edition also comes with "bullet time", if you dont want to use VATS use this. It slows the action down for a short time depending on your current action points. There have been a few situations where VATS wouldnt have saved me, but "bullet time" made the combat survivable. Really too much to list here, check it out on nexus. Mart's Mutant Mod works great with it as well. MMM add some creatures that fit in the fallout universe nicely and gives you several other options as well.

If you use any of the larger well known mods you should look at getting Fallout Interoperability Program - FOIP as well. This will help the mods work together correctly.

A few other mods I like: RR Companion Vault (this can be overpowered, I just ignore one of the vendors and it's fine), RR Refurbished (upgrades the vault), Black Wolf Backpack (when you want to carry a bit extra), sunglasses collection, Pipboy Readius (hand held pipboy), Responsive Kill Reactions, just added this last one. Basically if there is a witness to someone dropping dead the npc's start looking around for the person who shot thier friend. Seems to work so far. And a slew of companion mods, they've become like Pokemon, gotta collect them all :D

It helps when RPing a member of one of the big factions, namely the Enclave or the Brotherhood.
I recommend version 0.8 since it's not too visible. Use when you use and ignore otherwise.

.....and when not RPing as a member of the big factions? I can see it useful for maybe The Eagle Has Landed when I try that out, but playing as someone who sides with only himself, I don't see this as a must have.

because in 0.9 you have all sorts of stuff including a verti interior i think..

but it makes you feel like you are more in control of the battle field.. and if you have broken steel.. a certain quest would be a hell of a lot harder to get slaughtered within 5 mins of goin there if you use the highest difficulty.. but if you use god mode.. dont bother with Enclave Commander...

as for being a loner.. you can allways use the vertibird for fast travel..

I've got one in linked in my sig that lets you drive Liberty Prime. It almost fits with the lore, too. More of a fun novelty than a must have, though, since its so ludicrously overpowered.

I was quite surprised when I found this list with a google search, very useful and interesting selections of mods.
As a side note, I've started a little blog where I'm listing the mods I'm using (or have used) by category, each with a short description and download links. Not for the absolute beginner as I don't intend to write tutorials over there but I'm trying to create a useful reference for peoples looking to improve their game in a tested and stable way. Link is in my sig.

lol, it's just not what I want with this current character. It's hard to play the small band of vigilantes when you have vertibirds and a group of power armored soldiers following you ;)
