Good news for Skyrim modders, mods and people who love them

Post » Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:21 am

YES this will be my first elder scrolls on PC, as i played morrowind and oblivion on xbox and xbox 360. Mods are a huge selling point for me, and this makes me happy!

I don't unbderstand, does this mean mods can be installed without using horrendously complex apps like wyre bash?

Good news for PC gamers I guess.

I'll will play Skyrim on my 360. But sometimes when I see the mods I wish xbox 360 players could use them aswell.

Like, maybe not make it or something but only download mods. That would be so awesome! :')

Mods can always be installed without Wrye Bash (maybe with some exceptions like FCOM). And anyways, that's not the point. That only implies that mods could have the capacity to reach even more complexity, but in it's "internal code", not in the way they're installed.

I remember that Bethesda tried to get mods work on consoles. Is that still in progress, or has it already been said if it will work or not on the consoles?

I think you are the one who can make the best guess!

A related question: Why did you make this new scripting system from scratch, why not extend the old system? Is there a major difference at the very foundations of them?

I think you'll see when you see the differences for yourself :)

I'd bet the SE team will find their way in *pronto. They're awfully crafty.

Heh, they have to be to figure out where to plug things in in a compiled exe. But I doubt they'll get it day one - this is a bigger change then OB to F3.

I've always been curious...what do you devs think of OBSE? Have you seen (in it's Readme) the list of features that it adds? What do you think about them?

Personally I spent some time on the F3 and Oblivion wikis, figuring out what people liked/didn't like from the old system, and what kinds of things the script extenders added (on top of working with our design team and figuring out what they wanted as well). So at the very least some of the things were simmering in the back of my mind while working on the new stuff. But I didn't intentionally take anything directly from them.

First priority is to the designers here - giving them what they need, and making sure they have tools that work to do their job. But you guys are always in the back of my mind and I look forward to being able to speak more freely and help out once the mod tools are released

No thanks.

I'll stay with my loyal Xbox 360 ;)

Because in a few years there will be next generations. So new Xbox and PS consoles. I will get the newest version of the Xbox ofcourse.

Hey Viper, while you're here... what kinds of new bells and whistles are in the Skyrim NIF format? The Oblivion --> Fallout NIF evolution had quite a few.

heh, cool! I also see a parallelism here with modders and the SE creators...they also tailor them to the modder needs and petitions, so I guess it's just the logical way to do things :)

I'm slowly learning how to script, so I hope I'll create some nice questmods and stuff (mostly questmods, I hope to make some nice quality ones...they're my favourite stuff to do ).

Sorry, I don't work with NIFs at all. And even if I did, details like that aren't being talked about/released at this time, sorry.

With a SE, mods can go beyond the original game' scripting system. In short, they can be more complex and detailed, or do things the original game can't do (Deadly Reflex added decapitations for Oblivion, for instance).

Apart from that, no encryption means that DLL injection will be possible, which means .exe patches, hacks, DLL mods, etc...

Thanks for all your answers SmkViper!

I have one more question: Does the new scripting system have functions that affect or work together with Havok Behavior?

It probably means that we'll see things such as OBSE for Skyrim, and it did wonders for Oblivion, allowing many gameplay restrictions to be broken.

@KivanES Skyrim will not be using CEG. Modders can breathe easy.

Thanks for all the enthusiasm that's out there... this thread went over better than I expected!

Awesome news, man I should use twitter more

I started my account three days ago just to do this, so, yes, it can be rather useful. :)

Bonus: PM from ianpatt (SE team founder) indicates he's looking forward to working on Skyrim. :celebration:

Thanks to Pete for replying, and thanks to Kivan for asking the right person.

Sounds like a challenge ;)

However, yes - the http://www.bethblog.com/index.php/2011/04/27/the-bethesda-game-studios-interviews-jeff-lundin/ makes me expect that we'll need to be doing some rather different things.
