Good Old Games

Baldur's gate & Baldur's Gate 2

Deus Ex
System Shock 2 (and 1)
The Thief series
Morrowind

Chrono Trigger

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/heroes_of_might_and_magic_3_complete_edition (TBS): The HoMM games are a definitive entry in the TBS genre, and HoMM3 is argued by many (myself included) to be the best of the bunch. Definitely an essential for anyone who enjoys strategy games.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/psychonauts (Action adventure/3D platformer): In terms of mechanics Psychonauts is a decent enough action adventure/platformer, but really shines in excellent level design and incredibly well-written (and very quirky) characters. Basically the game is just plain fun to play, and is recommended regardless of whatever your normal genre preferences are.

http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/planescape_torment (RPG): Arguably the most well-written RPG ever made. If you enjoy RPGs with strong stories and that are much heavier on dialogue and choices than on combat then you need to play this game. Now.

These, basically. :D

Deus Ex and Psychonauts are also on Steam.

How has noone mentioned Chrono Cross or Legend of Dragoon? Both amazing RPG's for PS1.

Half-Life 2? BioShock? Pretty old games, and great games at that. If you want older games I suggest Fallout 1 and 2, and 1 and 2 or The Duke Nukem Games.

The "Gothic" games as well as the "Dungeon Siege" games are an old favorite.

Never hurts to go back to the original Starcraft as well. If you like silly strategy games, Cultures is a good choice. It really is a fun game, though after googling I noticed it's now available online, which is kind of a downer in my opinion.. I'd recommend buying the box version.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/cultures/review.html?tag=summary%3Bread-reviewhttp://www.amazon.com/Cultures-Pc/dp/B00005MGKQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1306033814&sr=8-1

Also, while talking about strategy, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pharaoh_(video_game) is nice too. Learned a lot about Egypt when I was a kid from that if nothing else ;) It's a fun game too of course.

Indeed, Jade Empire is an oft-overlooked gem - a kung-fu RPG from Bioware.

Arcanum, as already mentioned, is also a great choice. Like Fallout with orcs (and an incredibly deep RPG too.) :P

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines is another good one, and of course Deus Ex: not to be missed...

And although it's not an RPG as such, it does employ some character management: X-Com UFO Defence, one of the best hybrid-strategy games ever made (if you can get over how cruel it is...)

Gothic 2
Arx Fatalis

I'll second these.

Arx Fatalis (Arkane Studio) is a great dungeon crawl. Awesome atmosphere, killer puzzles and traps, and overall a fantastically designed game.

Make sure you get the Win7 patch.

Gothic II + Night of the Raven expansion. The combat can be frustrating and the chapter system confines the story to a linear style, but an excellent game none the less.

Depending how old you want to go, the Zork series and Anchorhead are good quality games

Homeworld!

A real time strategy game that really takes skill to get trough. Full 3d movement, persistent fleet (you build your fleet troughout the game, and continue to next mission with what you have left), limited resources, great story, amazing soundtrack, everything one could ask for.

Homeworld 2 has all that in a bit more accessible, prettier and not quite as diffcult format.

Homeworld: Cataclysm, an expanison to the first, is the odd one out. An unrelated spin-off with an ebul space monster from (hyper)space! :ahhh:

Alas Homeworld 3 will never happen. Or so i hope since Relic people said modern gamers couldn't handle free 3d movement

One of my favorite old games is Master Of Monsters on the sega genesis, but it's very hard to find.

There's a free game called Vantage Masters Online that's obviously inspired by it and is pretty fun. It doesn't quite capture MoM's magic but it's a good enough substitute.

Mechwarrior 2. Get it and play it (make sure its the DOS version, not the Windows 95 version). Its damn good, and is really loyal to the lore of battletech.

System Shock. Holy crap dear lord. When I first played it, the similarities to Bioshock are just ridiculous. It felt very natural, and goes to show that graphics and date released to not make the game. It was very fluid, and even though the control scheme was somewhat weird, once you get used to it its like a second nature and you kind of wish that all new games used it as well. Its really organic feeling. SHODAN is also the best video game villain ever, because she/it actually FEELS like a force to be reckoned with, and it truly hates you.

Many good choices above. I'd also add that Max Payne 1 and 2 were enjoyable games. The Hitman series was challenging.
VTM:Bloodlines is a classic.

The Bard's Tale (the 2004 Brian Fargo version) is fun and has pretty good combat, for a comedic game. Not much replayability but it's probably cheap these days.
