Good starter homes?

I'm a member of the Imperial Cult and Fighter's Guild, looking to be joining the Legion shortly as I build up my experience and equipment in preparation for journeying to Mount Kand in search of a staff. The problem is, I've amassed a lot of stuff, and am wanting a safe play to keep it.

I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations for a player bolthole to utilize in Morrowind (with Tamriel Rebuilt) prior to acquiring Great House backing.

Well, I've usually used the crates in Balmora to store stuff I wanted to keep or re-purposed the caves and dwellings of the outlaws I've pushed out. Alternataively, there are numerous mods out there that add houses you can rent or buy. And if you look around, IIRC there are some vacant places you can move into. Without getting into spoilers, you can also acquire use of a very large place or two in Balmora itself.

An early Balmora Fighters Guild quest has you kill an Orc woman living in town; her home makes a decent house afterward. West of Seyda Neen, in the swamp and a few feet from the coast, is a corpse. Finding the body starts the Death of a Taxman quest, which will usually end with you killing someone, allowing you to take their house. You might also be able to store things in Drarayne Thelas's attic after you clear the rats for the Fighter's Guild, but it doesn't have a bed.

The lower level of the Balmora Mages Guild is also good. It has a bed, it's next to a spell maker, a travel person, and there's plenty of room to pile stuff up.

You can safely use the empty flat in St Delyn Waist, North-two, in Vivec. The containers there don't have any ownership tag so it is safe tos tore your stuff in them, unlike most other empty homes.

I agree, but that quest isn't an early FG-quest, that house are the best house in-game that I know of for any type of charcter.

My problem with the Orc woman's house is the lack of containers to keep goods sorted.

I'll poke my head in at St Delyn's. It's an out of the way spot for me at the moment, but I'm mostly taking a long term approach to home ownership and while out of the way, being located within Vivec proper might come in handy some day.

Scoped this place out...it is indeed a nice little home. Tons more containers then I actually need, to boot. Plus, Seyda Neen is decently positioned for both the Silt Strider routes and is only a short jaunt over to Hla Oad for boat travel access.

Yeah usually ends up as my first house with a lot of my characters due to where it's placed and how many containers it's got lol

You can also purchase a scroll at the trader's shop in SN for Almsivi Intervention. Transports you instantly to the Temple Canton in Vivec.

Don't containers get the usual inventory sorting menu feature? I use the perma-corpse in Balmora and IIRC a corpse gets that.

Most bandit caves are safe, and almost all have unowned containers (many have respawning vermin - or Deadra, but the bandits are gone once you clear them out). The tax collector quest in Seyda Neen clears out a small shanty, but the containers continue to be owned by the deceased (unless you remove ownership via Construction Set). I've set up permanent residence in the old Hlormaren fortress in a couple of games, which is surprisingly close to Balmora and very spacious. Getting from Balmora to Hlormaren is possible by climbing the hill near the Morag Tong building, and then sliding down the opposite side. Getting back to Balmora either requires a short Levitation up the hill or an ALMSIVI Intervention spell.

Speaking of St. Delyn, there's another much more lavishly furnished apartment there in the last place you'd expect, with exotic hardwood paneling and fine furniture in the bedroom. The biggest issues are that a few rather anti-social people need to be evicted, the stench from outside the apartment tends to be bad on some days, and there's a big, creepy statue in the middle of the front room.
