Goodbye Oblivion

Post » Fri Nov 18, 2011 6:55 am

Tomorrow, on the West Coast of the USA, Skyrim will be released. I decided to say farewell to my favorite game, the game that in it, I accomplished so much, yet completed so little.

I went to Dive Rock. It was night time. In real life, almost 10:00 PM. I took Shadowmere and looked out over towards Skyrim. And there it was. The Nord homeland. In the distance, I saw what seemed like the Throat of the World. I headed back to dive rock and looked out amongst the stars, then slept until the morning.
And morning did come. I rode back over to the place where I was earlier, and looked at the mountain again.
"You cannot go that way, turn back" the game said. Ah, Oblivion, that is where you are wrong! For tomorrow, I WILL go that way, and tomorrow, I will not turn back!
And with those parting words, I looked out over Dive Rock once more. I looked down. Long fall. Then I jumped.
And I fell.
And fell.
And fell.
I saved the game, quit, and took the disc out of my PS3. A tear almost rolled from my eyes. In the short time I had the game, it had been one damn well good short time. Congratulations Bethesda, you've won me, and tomorrow my $60 will go to you. And goodbye Oblivion, you've served me well.

So, how did you say goodbye to Oblivion? If you did at all.

I'm not. I am still going to mod the living crap out it and enjoy it like I did 3 years ago. Ditto with Morrowind and Daggerfall.

I'm not saying goodbye either! As much as I'm digging Skyrim, I'm gonna return to those games of Eradi~Kate and Lady Saga in Cyrodiil.

I will not say goodbye to Oblivion, but I will rarely play it since I am on consoles and don't have the option of modding it.

No, I'm not saying goodbye. I don't understand the attitude of some gamers who put aside one game when a new game in a series comes out. To me, if a game was worth playing last year it is worth playing today and if it's worth playing today it will be worth playing next year.

When a new book is published I don't stop reading the author's older works. When a director releases a new film I don't stop watching his or her old films. Why would I stop playing a game permanently merely because a new game in a series has been released?

I will join with the rest as I′m not saying goodbye to one of the greatest games I′ve ever played. Cyrodiil still has much to offer and it′s still a very good game. Well, basically you can just read what Pseron Wyrd said as I completely agree with him there.

Usually i agree, but given Oblivion's issues and Skyrim's unadvlterated awesome i do believe it will make Oblivion obsolete for me. That based two hours of play, we'll see how the remaining 998 go :P

Same here. I have six mods in the works as we speak. I'm not even going to get Skyrim until the GotY edition comes out (you know they'll have one).

I still play the original Doom. So why would I want to stop playing Oblivion?

I'm not saying goodbye to either Oblivion or Morrowind. Run heavily modded games for both, and find them incredibly deep RPG experiences. Why should I jump on the latest bandwagon, just because gamesas has fueled it with well-funded PR? Besides, some of that PR has gone to praising the removal of features gamesas praised itself for in the past, such as character customization at game start. Removing hardcoe RPG elements, a good thing? Maybe for the console crowd; not for me.

So I'll wait 6 months to a year for the inevitable bugfixes, an expansion, and the good mods to start up. Then, we'll see. But I'm not about to abandon two releases I greatly enjoy.

 Of course you get to create your own character in Skyrim!!!! Don't listen to that nonsense, please!

they've removed a few things, such as some of the stats typically found in other RPGs (Behtesda or not), which don't get me wrong really svckS, and it's the one thing that I'm really wishing they hadn't messed with. But we still get to create our own character just after the start. Maybe Fable2 didn't play the game yet, or only played the first 5 minutes of it. But I can assure you character creation is still there. Christ, I wouldn't be playing at all if they had totally axed this. I'd be crying and bashing the game.

Look, you people know me well here, well some of you do. Good morning by the way! Anyways, I wouldn't lie to you. Skyrim is awesome awesome amazing, and if it weren't I would tell you it weren't.. Yes, there are a few things cut, and for some of you this stuff is going to be game-breaking, but Skyrim is still extremely immersive. It's a much different game than Oblivion so far, and 95% of these differences are good things.

I got my game at about 12:11 (I clocked it) and played until I couldn't keep my eyes open. I hope that's saying something.

...or maybe neither you nor the person who "quoted" me bothered to actually read what I wrote. I said, "character customization at game start." I meant, "character customization at game start." What we all understand from other, earlier ES titles as the way of building a character by selecting from a broad range of background content at the game's start is gone. In fact, at least a few of the really devoted fan reviewers are praising it having been removed--referred to it as "legacy clutter." And I can confirm, having checked out character creation on a friend's copy, that this is missing. I personally liked it, and if you disagree with me, that's fine. You're welcome to think Skyrim is the greatest thing on the face of the earth. But please don't tell me or others that the absence of in-depth character creation isn't accurate, when the lack of it is actually being praised, and was something gamesas PR promoted as a New Feature--just as they promoted the hardcoe RPG character design at game's start as a great feature years ago.

Read for content.

Got it. Sorry we misunderstood you.

Heh heh, now you're misquoting ME. I never said it's the "greatest thing on the face of the Earth", it's not. :nope: Cyrodiil still has plenty to offer me, personally. But Skyrim is also not a slam-dunk disappointment, either.

Yes, stuff is missing at the start, and if you had read what I said, you'd see that I am missing this. It's the one thing I wish Behtesda had notcut. :nope: but there's now MORE "stuff" as the game progresses, and time will tell whether or not this makes up for content at the beginning.

With my current modblivion setup tweaked to my liking with mods, I would find it difficult to transition to Skyrim, and then would be missing out on some features my modded setup has, specifically interface and gameplay tweaks.

So not jumping to Skyrim yet. No pre-order, will wait it out.

I am off to a very slow and methodical start in Skyrim ( 5hrs / lev2). Thus far, I am enjoying it but it is too early for me to draw any conclusions. The only thing that I can say after finally making it to Skyrim, is that Oblivion is one AWESOME game that will remain on my 360 HD indefinitely. Oblivion was my first TES. Now I know how many of the Morrowind and other fans of their first TES games felt. I dont think anything will ever replace Oblivion for me personally. I will place it on the back burner while I "discover" Skyrim, but I will return to complete all of my character's unfinished business there...... plus some. No goodbyes for me or my characters.

I just got the equipment to play Oblivion (and Skyrim too, duh...) a few days ago. With intensive playing, I finished the main quest today for the first time in ages. Manus Rostorard (brother for http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Pierlette_Rostorard)
Spoiler
just became the Champion of Cyrodiil
. He is currently also a Warlock in the Mages Guild, and he's done many side quests for mainly townspeople everywhere around Cyrodiil. With me having problems all day in downloading Skyrim, I just used some 5+ hours to finish Oblivion just in time. Tomorrow I'm moving up north! I won't miss you, Oblivion, since I can play you again whenever I want now! You are great, too!

I'm not saying bye to Oblivion just yet. I'll wait till I actually get Skyrim first.

But until then I need to think up a way to finally end my character. He's been my main since I got the game about 4 years ago. Imperial Assassin. We've been through quite a bit together. I'm going to make one that resembles him for Skyrim, and I'll RP that he's a descendant of some sort. Any ideas on closure for him?

Yeah, I think I'll take him on one final tour of Cyrodiil and then do as the OP. Thanks. :)

Edit: Actually, I have an even better idea; I'll have one of the female followers come along with my character for this little trip. She'll be his love interest of sorts, and as he tours the land, their relationship will cultivate. On the final night when he's on Dive Rock, he'll camp for the night with her, and that's where I'll end the game.

That should signify the conception of his offspring which will of course continue the blood line for generations until the time of Skryim.
