Goodbye, Oblivion

Post » Wed Dec 07, 2011 4:30 pm

Thank you, Bethesda.

Last night I finished my final, uncountable playthrough of Oblivion. There was my very first TES playthrough when I was a Nord. Barely knew what I was doing, only having watched my wife for the previous four months. Only when she had to buckle down for the new university year did I take it up.

I was hooked.

The music in the intro stirred me like few things do. Popping out from the tunnel for the first time- day or night- was always gorgeous and inspiring.

And then you were hit with the freedom! Anything- go do it! Just be what you want. And I did. It was addictive.

So then there was the bad-ass Dunmer thief who cared little for the world and killed himself. There was the walking leviathan Orc that simply mowed down any obstacle with his wicked blunt strikes. There was a Bosmer who completed the thieves guild quest for the very first time for me and who's sick sneak skill allowed him to whizz around Cyrodil sight unseen. I'd played the game for hundreds of hours by that point but had never done that quest. It was so interesting! Then there was my peach-fuzzed Ra'gada, one of my favorite characters ever but who was victimized by a corrupted save. My final character was a full-on Breton conjurer. I'd never even dabbled as a conjurer prior. Never even cast a conjuration spell previous. Oh, what a hoot of fun I was missing! Being able to summon daedra and have them do my bidding while I stood at a distance peppering my opponent with destruction spells- Awesome fun!

Of course, there are the characters as well that have left an indelible mark on my memory. For me the favorites include the Jemayne brothers, Rugdumph, Owyn, Modryn, Sir Mazoga, Lucien Lachance, Count Hassildor, Baurus, Thoronir, Maeva the Buxom :hubbahubba:

In the end, while I gently hugged my wife as we both sat and watched Akatosh defeat Dagon for the final time, we both smiled at the joy this game has given us. But no tears, for now we know Skyrim is a mere eleven days away and new heroes will rise, stories to weave, regions to wander and dungeons to raid.

I greatly look forward to my next hundred hours spent upon Tamriel's soil.

I agree. "Vintage" can be applied to more than wine. All things do get better with age... Except produce. And maybe people. But whatever, I could digress infinitely in defeating my own point. :sadvaultboy:

You'll be back, sekou. They always come back.

Once my year of nostalgia wears off from Skyrim I'll probably return to Oblivion. Just to see how it compares.

...and now let's hear what Lady Saga has to say....

Lush forests of Green!

I love thee Unseen!

Parishes and Ruins!

I shall visit thee soon!

Thine Gold and Treasures await!

And shall this be my fate?

To travel across the Lands...

Across Grass Water and Sands...

Thine Creatures fall to my Bow,

... to my Staff, my Axe, they shall go!

... as I traverse deep forests every hour

I long to see the sight of White Gold Tower!

... North, East, West, and South ...

I live Thee Lands which feed My Mouth!

Prayer, Wisdom, Folly and Grace

Bethesda and the Nines I call with Haste

To Bethesda I am a' Calling...

For I am Lady Saga!

Ummm...I wanted EradiKate to have a say, but she's not going to. Ungrateful [censored]. :P

And Beujok The Grey Wizard is asleep right now. That's all he does is sleep nowadays, now that the Empire has been saved.

I'll never say a goodbye letter to any Bethesda RPG. Hell, I still play Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Oh no, I'm not saying good-bye yet. I'll still play Oblivion while doing some travellings in Skyrim too. Have bought Oblivion 2 years ago and only started playing it seriously, just recently. I'll probably do all the organizations quests except the dark brotherhood, then do some normal side-quests and finally beat the main game. Then I'll be able to move on to Skyrim.

With attributes gone for good from character traits, I doubt very much Oblivion or any other TES will be put aside. I for one will check Skyrim feedback on the forums, see what is really in and out and then decide where to inve$t.

I don't understand the attitude of some gamers who put aside one game when a new game in a series comes out. To me, if a game was worth playing last year it is worth playing today and if it's worth playing today it will be worth playing next year.

When a new book is published I don't stop reading the author's older works. When a director releases a new film I don't stop watching his or her old films. Why would I stop playing a game permanently merely because a new game in a series has been released?

I'll never say goodbye to oblivion either. In fact, I've just decided to get some of the DLCs, just over one week before skyrim comes out :lmao: Sure I'll be getting Skyrim on release, but that doesn't mean I'll stop playing oblivion. :tes:

Very good point, as we also can see in the Morrowind forum
