Maybe your chips are getting fried:(

It might be time to invest in a new (and better) machine. :)

If this is your main hobby.....then I would seriously suggest that a good investment in a very decent machine that will see you through the next few years including TESVI, would actually be worth the pain of the repayments.

If the parental bank is uncooperative then talk about other ways to fund it.

Normally I'd advise always saving up first....dont get into credit debt.....you'll get enough of that later with having to borrow to fund a car and a mortgage around your neck. But Im saying here....this is your special hobby.....so it might be worth it.....most people get phones costing hundreds on monthly contracts.....so on that basis spreading a really good PC (great PC) over a couple of years would seem sensible to me.

Personally....I would be loath to buy second hand. It all comes down to personal circumstances.

Thats a shame. Have you thought about picking up an old desktop PC? People are chucking them out replacing them with tablets and what not and I'm guessing since you're used to a laptop you're used to vanilla or nearly vanillla Skyrim you don't need mega hardware my mothers old PC with a 10 year old cpu and 4GB Ram, put a cheap gfx card in it and it could handle vanilla Skyrim on High plus a few non-demanding mods. I actually chucked that one out not so long ago the hardware is almost worthless apart from the card which I still have.

Vanilla savegames should just copy straight over from one machine to the other and then just carry on where you left off basically.

There are some laptops that aren't made for gaming. The cooling systems are not adequate. They are made for regular use (email, web, word processing, etc).

Not sustained high usage heat patterns.

I'm like Rick - I don't do used or refurb, though I know people who don't buy anything else and are always happy *shrug*. The machine this one replaced cost me (amortized over its lifetime of 7 years) around $175 a year, which is dirt cheap - considering Rick's point about phones (which, btw, I don't do). Of course, I don't have any problem buying a good machine when I wear one out, and I know that's not the case for lots of people, especially those living at home while going to school.

I'm sorry you'll have to go back to console vanilla-land, but now you've experienced the glory that Skyrim can be on PC, you'll at least have a prod to keep you saving up for a real rig!

Have you tried undervolting? I don't know much about it other than anecdotal evidence of it helping to keep laptops cooler, but if you're ready to get a new one anyway I guess all options are on the table to prolong it's life.

It might be a bit clunky but could you set a up a desk fan and just blow it towards your computer? I've had to do that before for my old POS computer while main one was being repaired and it worked all right.

Yeah, that works okay for desktops as a temp measure, but laptops are - enclosed.... so there's not really any way to get forced air in there.
