Goodsprings home...

Post » Sun May 05, 2013 10:25 am

I was just thinking of the different homes in the game and a thought just occurred to me. Why is it that Goodsprings, a place that has few residents any more and plenty of spare room, didn't offer the courier (if he saved the town) a house there? I think it'd be a good early place to store loot and what not. Could this be down to there being no leading figure in the town or Obsidian didn't want a house to be obtained so early?

Or they were just lazy. Look at fo3 and megaton, they offered a house if i remember correctly, and that was right after you started the game. They even had a companion ( my favorite still) Jericho. love the attitude.

I was kind of disappointed that you couldn't get a house in Goodsprings myself when I first started playing NV. But once I figured out that the schoolhouse and Victor's shack were safe places to store loot, I just started using them.

Not to mention the little trailer behind the bar and Chets store. No loading door, and there's a bed with a couple suitcases. Not a place for someone who has to have a seperate container for every type of item.

I just assumed Victors Shack was the players house for Goodsprings.

i sort've got the impression they didnt have enough space (since trudy shares a house with a goodsprings settler).

it is odd though... you can't get a place in Primm either :/ after all you do for them! Don't see how getting rid of dangerous powder gangers isn't worthy of a home in 2 settlements, but getting rid of peaceful ghouls in another is....

I know it might sound stupid but although I do on many occassions, I hate leaving my stuff in 'safe' containers out in the world. I much prefer having my stuff in a place that actually I own. Sometimes I used the abandoned shelter next to Yanghtze memorial but apart from that it's usually BOS safehouse (my favourite) or the novac room.

Because on PC, Goodsprings is avoided like the plague. Also 'Victor's shack' has the Old World Flag on it. Gives you a bit of a hint there..

I hope they have a home available relatively early on in fo4. Having a safe place makes the game so much easier to start. More friendly.

Why is it avoided "like the plague" ?

Goodsprings is 'Good' for crashing like hell on PC, unmodded. When you start modding your game, Goodsprings becomes Hellsprings. Crashes upon crashes, from fast traveling, entering buildings, even WALKING to Goodsprings will result in a good 80-90% of a crash. You've been warned.

Strange, I never have crashed there once in my current mod set up, except for your usual you've been playing for a few hours, time to stop crash. But those happen anywhere as is.

Back tot he topic: Well, you got Victor's shack, as others have said, but I always use the trailer out back of the saloon. Storage is never a problem for me, but I am one who hardly picks up stuff. Would been cool if say after the whole situation, they give you the Gas station as a first home sort of deal. Of course it'd need some better storage, perhaps, but it isn't going to be in use after that, so why not?

That is strange, seeing as Goodspring has a basic bug that if you travel to it while at their goodspring source, it crashes as well. Any mod that alters or adds locations gets burned by Goodsprings, so to speak, a lot of modders put their assets INTO Goodsprings, so it's the main reason most PC users try to get out of the location ASAP.

Perhaps, and this is just a wild guess, the fine folks at Goodsprings figured no one was going to take being shot in the head lying down, and would want to settle things.

Besides, what's wrong with the abandoned school house? It's not like anyone's using it. ;)

I was curious if it was actually suppose to be the players very own house, and they decided to give a robot a house..

Ehm ... no bed, no running water, no workbench / reloading bench (maybe they're extra items, but several other locations have such features), no fridge (for storing food - RP purposes), no couch / chair, no radio ... ?

Me too, but I think it's self-explanatory somehow: why should the player move forward if the game give him everything right at the beginning? Getting a decent home right in the first hour would be counter-initiative from the gameplay's perspective, at least the current way you're feeling that Goodsprings is a temporary place in your journey. Think about it: where are you sleeping every time you start a new character? Whether it's Doc Mitchell's house, the abandoned trailer behind the store or Victor's shack, you can feel that you're just a guest, no more. Okay, it would be cool to hear that "Hey, you helped saving our little town, so here's the key of that nice shack, enjoy your stay!", but backing your potential move to Victor's home would be too much. Actually, I think the developers chose the right path to quasi pass that building to you - technically the house is not yours but as Victor went off it's not used by any more, and since it has and Old World flag (as a reference) on it anyway ...

I have found the Novac Hotel room to be a perfect place for the game to offer me a first home, if I am following the first act of the MQ. By the time I get to that place, I need some storage, but prior to that, I have never had more than I could carry.

It is, but if people aren't told "THIS IS YOUR NEW HOUSE IN THIS TOWN" then they don't find one. A house is anywhere with a bed and a place to store loot, it doesn't need to have every ammenity in the game available right there for your convenience; there are ammo and work benches in Goodsprings and a Camp Fire not too far away near the Springs (where there is also clean water).

Victor does kind of stand right in front of the door too. I have to squeeze past him sometimes to get in there.

I always start out by living in the trailer at Goodsprings Source. Only a suitcase for storage but its only temporary till I get to Novac, which is my main base.

I still find the trailer behind the saloon the best place. No load screen, bed, benches right by there. Plus you have a nice breeze going through when you sleep.

I'm the same way. I rarely ever hold into anything until i secure a home. i usually keep what i can carry and sell the rest.

I'd rather have a place of my own than settling someone's place like it ain't no thing. I mean, IRL that would be rude.

Having Courier's Stash also loads you with loads of stuff you may not want to use, and I like to keep unique around.

It's technically not a "Player Home" in that it's intended for the rest of the game, that's why there is a lack of storage choices in that place. But, it does have safe containers and the NPCs stay out of it. And, there is a bed to use in there to sleep.
