Google and Youtube...

^ Maybe I linked my accounts and then forgot about it then? Hmmm...

Why does everyone think there's some sort of global conspiracy where if you make an account with google or facebook that company will own your soul forever?

It's not that. It's just a matter of personal privacy. Most people don't like the idea of a corporation logging everything they do on the internet. It's not always because they're worried about what they'll do with that information, but because most people hate the idea of being categorised and numbered in such a way.

It's also bloody invasive.

Great news.

Youtube is a service offered by Google, same as Gmail and all that, you SHOULD be able to use the same account for all of their services.

It seems most people are complaining because they don't have a google account

Still don't quite understand why, since you can make your Google account credentials *Exactly* the same as your old Youtube credentials if you want to. Google already has your Youtube credentials, so it's not like you are giving them information they didn't already have. All they are doing is consolidating their services.

To reiterate: Getting a google account does NOT mean you have to get gmail. You can use whatever email you currently use with your google account.

Very annoyed, since not only do I have have no Google account, but on signing up for one they ask for my mobile phone number. Now I can't access my account and all the videos I uploaded, unless I give them my number to make a Google account, which I am very wary of doing.. might actually give them the number of an old SIM card that I don't use anymore. Or is there any way around this?? :stare:

Eh, don't know what's going on with you. I've never had to give Google any phone number. They do offer password recovery by text and two-factor authentication by phone, but both of those things are optional

I don't know either, I heard from someone else he was able to create and link accounts without giving a number. But I did a quick search and found other people are having the same issue as me. When I try to create the account I get redirected to this screen, the verification for my account:

It's the same whether I try to create an account via the Youtube prompt or whether I go straight to Google accounts and make one there.

Edit: In their FAQ, they say "In an effort to protect our users from abuse, we sometimes ask users to verify their identity before they're able to create or sign into accounts." and "If you're trying to sign up for a Google Account, you may be asked to provide a phone number to verify your account."
Guess I might just be one of those unlucky people. Wonder if I can try creating an account from a different computer or something.

That's the thing I don't understand. It takes around 30 seconds to make an account.

Ok.... so im sure plenty of you have seen this new, dumb message on youtube saying, "You will no longer be able to sign into youtube without a google account"

Now... I don't know about you all, but I am sure as hell tired of Google putting it's [censored] face into my business. So yeah.. I could take a couple minutes out of my time and make the account, hell I probably already have one since I use Gmail.. but I don't freaking need Google sending me adds every [censored] day.

So, what are your thoughts on this new.... 'feature'?

It isn't new, it happens atleast since 2 years ago. It's pretty annoying, I got one of my youtube accounts banned because of copyright stuff, so when I see that message I get scared for a second :ahhh:

Google owns youtube. It makes sense for them to do this. Not like it's a tedious task to link two accounts.

Yeah. It took me couple minutes and it didn't change anything in my account so

They started asking me for a phone number after I made a few alternate gmail accounts.
