Why does Google Maps have such crappy imagine for Chernobyl when viewed from the air? The left side of town is clearly imaged but the right and off that way just becomes a blurry mess, as if someone took it with the first camera phone. What reasons is there to hide this from public view?
It isn't necessarily hidden; I've seen the same phenomenon on other areas in Google maps, it just depends on where the most recent photographs are.
I did have a look at the Chernobyl area a couple of years back and managed to find the Brain Scorcher. It looked like a huge mattress carcass stood on its side.

The latest images of where I am looking is 2012, I've found pictures of my local area dated 2008 and are better shown than this newer image. How it can have a half clear picture for on side of the town and not the other is pretty obscure, considering the picture is dated 2012 .

Must be the green radiation that Bethesda got the inspiration from for Fallout
The difference in Google Map image clarity is based on if they are using a Satellite image or an local GIS image. Most towns and counties, at least in the US, do a Aerial Survey every few years. Google uses those to update it's maps. Rural areas, places in other countries that don't have GIS Mapping programs will show up as low res pictures.

I just took a look and either I'm missing something or I'm not seeing what you're seeing. Honestly, the whole area appears at about the same resolution when I try the satellite view.
Sicily used to be just a big green blob on google maps once upon a time. I doubt there is much of interest there, which is maybe why they have low-res pictures (I haven't had a look yet myself).
