Got a feeling dialogue is going to be short

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:33 am

"Your timing is impeccable"

That's probably going to be the standard length for dialogue. Todd Howard already said he's streamlining and a common complaint I see in games across the board is that dialogue is too long; often compared to "essays." In RPGs games nonetheless. New Vegas, Witcher 3, etc. God forbid we get dialogue in a RPG. Guess we'll get more pew pew in exchange.

Honestly this is what should have been debated the entire time. But no, everyones worried about "I can't pretend my character has my voice".

I'm skeptical. I actually prefer the Morrowind days of no voice acting with the giant paragraphics detailing the lore of the world. Theres just not as much lore going on anymore these days...However, if they must switch to this dial-based system (which isn't the end of the world), I'll be happy if they're kept short and the dialogue is more action oriented than conversation oriented if that makes sense. This is because we are now listening to twice the voice acting taking up over twice the time (for those who read faster than they speak)...so I don't want to be stuck in dialogue for over a minute and barely hear anything important...

At the same time, this is the one reason (a big reason) why I wish they would have stayed with the old dialogue system (or the old, old dialogue system).

That's actually voluminous in contrast to most of the dialogue options we have seen so far, as most that we've seen have averaged between 1 - 3 words.

Can't wait for Fallout 5 when dialogue is nothing more than neanderthalic grunts so we can get to da actionz quika!!! :gun: :gun: :gun: :gun:

Dialogue is an archaic and outdated game mechanic, I'm glad Todd realizes this and knows the best thing we can have is more pew pews!!!!!! :flamethrower: :read:

I love lots of dialogue :) there was never a time in TW3 where I said "give me the short version" screw that! Tell me your life story Mr. Peasant and also describe each scale on that monster you want me to kill <3 The dialogue will obviously be reduced in fallout 4 :( the voice acting simply doesn't allow for as many options from the protagonist but I don't think it will be quite as short as you think OP.

Meh to early to judge, of course dialogue was kept at minimum at E3, honestly doesn't make riveting stage material, consider they had to involve the PC voice actors for two years, a noteworthy time to involve any VA actor it's clear a lot of work has been put into dialogue.

Were you guys this mad when they showed New Vegas off at E3 and they actually skipped over dialogue so they can teleport to a warzone to shoot people up with the new guns?

Wait, is this a real thing? I always thought it was sarcasm or irony whenver I saw posts like that. I didn't really think majority of players would have the attention span of 5 seconds for real..

As for the dialogie, I am sure it can't be *that* bad. Some substantial dialogue must be present, I am sure (even if it's auto-dialogue like in ME3)..

No, I was glad but then when the actual game came out it was filled with dialogue, what a disappointment.

But the entire game can be judged by what they show off at E3, correct? By skipping over the dialogue, they are saying that it is not important, by showing only shooting, they are saying that it is the only thing they've made for their game. New Vegas is clearly a cod clone with no roleplaying and a pure FPS! Panic and freak out!

The amount of people who dedicate their lives to hating on a game just irks me. Its like this all across gaming and all across time. Good Old Morrowind had people on these forums in 2002 talking about how the game was dumbed down for xbox players and that everything had been lost since Daggerfall and that Bethesda was completely done as a serious RPG company. Dialogue was crap, there was no choices and consequences, and they are going to need to "up their game" if they want to make it farther in the gaming industry.

Bethesda is no stranger to having these types of people talk [censored] about their game. They shrugged them off when they told them Morrowind was crap, and they are shrugging them off with people telling them Fallout 4 is crap. 10 years from now it will be the exact same situation, that white noise telling them that their games are dumbed down and they are going to buy it but they arent going to like it. It was like that in 2002, it is like it in 2015, and it will be like it in 2025.

People actually thought Randomly-Generated-Daggerfall had better dialogue, lore, quest, choices and consequences than Morrorwind?

Hahahaha, that is so lame and weird, just because it didn't have the same skills in Daggerfall and the same infinitely generated "bland" world, made Morrowind worse?

Let's not derail the thread, but Morrowind is one of the best rpgs I've ever played, its writing is amazing, the books it had are fantastic, and the lore is mesmerizing, I love it

There's some bizarre cycle with Bethesda games. It goes a little like this:

1 - Announcement

2 - Discussion on vague details

3 - More details revealed

4 - People hate the changes

5 - Rehash of the same "I don't like X" thread between reveal and launch

6 - Sarcastic quips about "X being Y" with no logic behind X

7 - Game is released

8 - Vocal critics purchase said game and chastise themselves

9 - Repeat 4-5 years later

TL;DR Bethesda forums = masochist's lounge

they clearly just went through the basic dialogue like mass effect in a way you make talk to people for a while or not long at all.

Way to generalize. What about everyone else? Everything you said could be said again by changing "hater" to "really devoted fan." Loving a game after seeing it for 10 minutes is just as bad as hating it after seeing it for 10 minutes. Discussion on the probable bad or good parts is fine.

Honestly, I don't care about the Elder Scrolls franchise. The entire series is sub-par imo, hence why I am in the Fallout forum. I started Fallout with New Vegas and still hold it to high regard.

Minus the fact that the dialogue options are paraphrased, the PC already says quite a bit. It's as if yes/no dialogue didn't exist in FNV or Fo3 - almost as if every conversation was some existential, philosophical discussion.
