Probably because there is only 1 Oscars ceremony and it's official, while there are 100s of GotYs and none of them are official.

Id imagine the 2 hour special awards multi-million dollar event where the developers themselves show up to get an award dressed in there best which they DONT do anywhere else besides the VGA's ......would be the main GOTY event

..Eh? Broken? Unfinished? Bethesda developed this game with passion for over five years. I don't have any major technical problems with Skyrim, and I'm really enjoying it. You seem upset and angry about this, it's just an award. :glare:

You're mistaken, there is no official GotY event, and the few people who decided which game to give which award at Spike are no more authoritative than those who decide which game to give which award at every other place. Everyone and their dog has a GotY verdict.

Ok by that logic . Nothing means anything. Every game out there is on even ground brink is just a good a shooter as BF3 and Rift and wow are just as good as each other.... Yay this generation everyone is a winner!!

Disappointed about the GOTY award but glad (EX?) Bethesda fans took Skyrim out of the G4 awards. I think we should have voted out skyrim sooner, however, and Gears of War 3 would have went against Assassin's Creed instead of Skyward Sword.

Sorry, but that reasoning doesn't parallel what I said, and is not logical. You would have been correct if you'd said "by that reasoning every GotY out there is just as 'official' as every other GotY out there"... because that's the reality.

True... although there are any number of critic award, viewer awards, magazine awards etc for Movie of the year, album of the year etc. These industries just have a lot more noticeable big events with weight attached to them (because there is a lot more money in them).

And even then people disagree "The Oscar went to what?" "You mean the Emmey's were ever relevant?".

But anyway, to broader topics - how is the GOTY decided here, there, everywhere?

I am pretty sure the people play it and base the award on their experience. Sorry to say they didn't go to your house and play your one. Evidently their experience with the game was sufficient for them to name it their GOTY.

Just like if I was asked to pick a GOTY I would give it to Skyrim because I have played it and it is my GOTY. I know other people have had difficulty with it, which is unfortunate, but ultimately I haven't experienced that and I could only based my GOTY on my experiences, not other peoples.

Too bad that show was a complete joke. MW3 won best shooter. They even had Charlie Sheen of all people give it out. Zelda should have one.

And a massive flaw in Spike's RPG of the year award (and other award categories) is that they didn't even include Skyrim's biggest contender, Skyward Sword, as a nominee, or Witcher 2... yet they included Dragon Age 2 (an obvious dud)???? For GotY they also didn't include the heavy hitter of MW3, and I'm sure others. Their selection of nominees for each category was extremely arbitrary and cut out primary threats to the winning titles of those categories. Overall, I think the Spike awards is less authoritative than many others out there because they excluded chief candidates from categories so that the winners were set up.

I bet The Witcher 2 gets nothing and all the big name game titles and Studios get something for their rehashed games.

I've so far had 300 hours of enjoyable play out of Skyrim, that's at least 240 hours more joy than I've had from any other game released in the last 12 months (or even the last 3 years).
