GOTY WindowsXP Sp3 Freezing

Post » Sun Feb 13, 2011 2:04 am

Hi people ;D

Well, i'm going to try to give all the informations as possible, because I need a fix for this so annoying bug that i'm having...

Let's go first to the History xD...

When Fallout 3 was first released, I played it, with a few CTDs here and there, I could live with it. Then one day (Some months after the game release), the game start to give a really strange crash, the game freezed, the sound still goes on, and then all the colors of my pc looked like 8bits video-games xD, so then I need to reboot the PC...

Right after Fallout New Vegas was released, the SAME problem happened, but only 6 times in almost 20h of gameplay.

Then I decided to buy the GOTY version of Fallout 3, installed it perfectly, got some mods here, others there, still, the same crash, tried the iNumHWThreads=2 fix, well, the game was still crashing, but the sounds didn't continued, and still, needed to reboot the PC.

Re-installed the game, only put the really needed mods, and still the same bug.. I'm using K-Lite Codec Pack, with ffdshow exceptions for both Fallout3.exe and fose_loader.exe. I don't use AutoSaves and QuickSaves, I create a new Save every time I need to save the game.

Now, the facts...

From all the times that the crash has happened, 90% was when I tried to save the game. The other 10% were: Talking to a NPC, Barter and Container Menus, and sometimes when loading a new area.
*Another really strange thing is that I can't save my game close to the Jefferson Memorial, it goes CTD '-'

My PC especifications:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual 5600+ 2.91GHz
2GB of Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT XFX GDDR3 512MB

I use FalloutScriptExtender.

I think you should put "Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch.esm" after Fallout3.esm and before Anchorage.esm, because this patch was intended for Fallout3.esm not the DLC..if you use Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch - Broken Steel.esp maybe you can try http://www.mediafire.com/?z3qmlzyzomy

Can't help with the crashing as I suffer the same fate since my last computer upgrade. There is some kind of issue with certain hardware setups that most likely will never be fixed. Playing windowed mode makes the crashes less frequent for me, but I lose about 15~ fps. The crashing that causes the colors to shift to 8 bit, and needs a restart, only happens in full screen mode if the game is set to the same resolution as your desktop. You should be able to avoid that by using a different resolution in game.
