Gradual Slowdown w/ new PC

Post » Fri May 27, 2011 8:07 am

Hi all,

I just built a new PC and downloaded Oblivion GOTY Deluxe off steam. When I first start Oblivion it runs at a steady high FPS rate. However over 5 minutes or so of play, the FPS slowly drops off over the next 5-10 minutes until I am only getting 2-3 FPS and the game is basically unplayable. No mods have installed and I'm not using any extra programs like OBSE. If I save, exit oblivion, restart the game, and load that save, my FPS will go back up to normal, but then it still goes down over the next 5-10 minutes.

My system (no overclocking done):
Windows 7 Professional (64 bit)
AMD Athlon II X3 440 (3.0ghz) on an ASUS mobo
Samsung 7200RPM 1TB Hard Drive Disk
ATI Radeon 5670 512MB
4GB DDR3 1066 RAM
500W PSU

Doubtful it is a heat / wattage problem as every other game, even more graphically demanding ones, run just fine.

Things I have tried and have not had success with:
-Uninstalling Oblivion and reinstalling it off Steam again
-Running Oblivion in XP SP3 compatability mode
-Disabling all DLC and expansion data files and playing vanilla obliviong
-Using different graphic settings in Oblivion options (on minimum graphics the bug still occurs, just my FPS starts higher so it takes longer to drop down to single-digit FPS)
-Installing Oblivion unofficial patches
-Getting through the starting areas and seeing if it is a bug with those areas (bug occurs where-ever I go)
-Typing PCB (purge cell buffers) in console (does nothing)
-Updating my video card drivers and playing with the settings (mostly disabling everything)

Can anyone help me with this issue? Much thanks in advance.

Wow, that's a new one on me.

Um. Maybe post a dxdiag (between spoiler tags, preferably) - you never know, something might show up there.

I did a little more playing with the program today, but no luck.

I noticed that the problem seems to be worse when I'm moving around. If I stand still the FPS still gradually deteriorates but at a much slower pace than if I'm moving around the world.

Also at one point I activated task manager, and saw that there were some errors that I had never seen before created by the game (likely because the errors disappeared when the game closed). Something about not being able to run a file, Mfplat.dll. Upon looking in windows / system32 I don't see that file even existing. Wondering if my problems have something to do with this.

Windows Process Description:

The mfplat.dll file is also described as the Media Foundation Platform DLL and is a component of the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system.

The mfplat.dll module and the Media Foundation Platform Layer are equipped with helper objects that are needed by the Media Foundation Control Layer and the Media Foundation Pipeline Layer. The Control Layer is in charge of the stream of multimedia data while the Pipeline Layer provides the Media Foundation with the elements that produce, modify and utilize media information, such as multimedia encoders, sources, decoders, and color modifiers.

The mfplat.dll file and the Media Foundation Platform Layer also specify the event model, asynchronous callbacks, and the queues of work to be performed.

The Microsoft Media Foundation (MF) is a multimedia structure platform for the transmission of digital media in Microsoft Windows Vista and was designed to take the place of the Microsoft Windows Media Software Development Kit, DirectX Media Objects, and all previous multimedia Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), such as Video for Windows and Audio Compression Manager. The DirectShow technology is still being used, in collaboration with MF, but it will ultimately be replaced by MF.

The first release of MF and the mfplat.dll module were designed for enhancing the quality of the playback of multimedia files, high-definition video, and to provide a more cohesive methodology for Digital Rights Management. DXVA 2.0 is also included in MF so that the computer hardware could access more of the video processing queue.

Not sure if that dll is still used in win7 but it is there on my Vista system - to see if it is the cause of the problem you might try disabling music and sound in game and see if the slowdown goes away !

I just posted this to someone else with the same problem. Search the web for instruction on disabling Superfetch in Windows 7. I had this same problem on a brand new system.

I have googled it just now, and this seemed like wisdom, so...

Go to the start menu, then Accessories. Right click on Command Prompt and choose "Run as Administrator", selecting Yes as required. Once at the prompt, type "sfc /scannow", but without the quote marks. See what comes up, if anything much. You could also try repairing the Windows installation, from the original DVD.

Otherwise, a codec fix might help (e.g., courtesy of K-Lite Codec Pack, which can be safely and totally uninstalled afterwards, if desired), but I doubt it. Also, grabbing the latest (June 2010, I believe) DirectX redist package and installing that, again could help. But again, not that likely, I think. Still worth doing both, if you haven't already. Simply 100% harmless at worst.

Well, I'd go for the scannow, to make sure (though you'll probably find out what you already more or less know, I imagine). And, if it *is* purely a single dll issue, the Windows installation repair process should restore it. Speaking of which, you could try a System Restore... but be mindful of what you've installed, uninstalled, etc. (and when) if you do so.

Other things that come to mind are malware-type issues, which certainly can wreak havoc with DLLs. Might be worth (if you haven't) updating your antivirus and antispyware apps, and running full scans, just in case. Better safe than sorry, and all that.

edit: Wow, ninjaed. And how. :) I hope it's a case of Sagian's fix solving it. As you can tell, I was kinda shooting in the dark there.

Thanks for the continued replies guys. Really appreciate the help

Disabling superfetch has no effect.
Installing K-Lite Codec Pack got rid of the annoying error messages, but still there is no effect on my framerate.

Did the sfc /scannow and my results were that my system is 100% fine.

So once again I'm at a loss.

Just some more casual observations, walking around seems to not slow it down that much, although it will eventually drag out over time. But when combat starts FPS takes a REAL big hit and doesn't seem to recover. Also talking to anyone seems to speed the slowdown along quickly. I saved the game right before the emporer gets killed at the start. Before the conversation my FPS is somewhere between 60-80. After the conversation was over I had a whopping 7 FPS.

Considering contacting steam and just seeing if I can get my money back. This really svcks.

Have you tried the codec fix, specifically? It should be in the start menu, under K-Lite or whatever. If not, it won't do any harm, at worst.

And a DirectX update might still be worth a try, though I must admit, I'm doubtful...

Scanned for malware with something like Malwarebytes' Antimalware, and/or whatever else you might prefer?

Have you tried disabling the music and sounds in the .ini file ?? Esp since you mention battles as a problem -- the Music switches at the beginning and end of battle so this may be the cause of the problem. (just as a temp test to see if the audio system is the culprit ---- OB and your VIA chipset onboard sound tend to have some issues !) -- at least by testing you will know if that is the problem and can then refocus your efforts on correcting it if it is indeed the culprit. (ie. updating audio settings and drivers, leaving music turned off in game - or buying a sound card)

I did this and noticed it corrected the problem.

I did a system repair but no luck.

Then out of sheer desperation I tried installing FDDshow codecs, and now it works perfectly fine. Getting a good steady 60 FPS maxed out, no mods yet. Ran around smacking guards in the face for a good 15 minutes and saw no framerate deterioration.

Thanks to EVERYONE for their help, you guys are awesome!
