So graphical question

Post » Sat Feb 19, 2011 3:07 am

So since the PC version is going to look similar to the console version minus the fact we get higher resolution textures; the BIG question is will the skyrim engine support DX11, but the effects simply not being implemented ingame, so that is if pc modders wanted to mod in DX11 tessellation, lighting, soft shadows ect effects could they. This would BE A HUGE thing for the PC version because of how much more graphical fidelity tessellation offers at such a low performance hit; this PLUS texture mods ect and so on could keep the game beautiful for years to come. There is other things to... http://s08.idav.ucdavis.edu/boyd-dx11-compute-shader.pdf Read it understand it LOVE IT. So who wants them some DX11 support.

inb4 graphics
And i was thinking as bethesda would be using this engine for future titles would not one want to future proof said engine?

I could go into detail, use college level grammar, sentence structuring and so on. I could talk about the technical awesomeness that is DX11. The thing is I'm lazy so hence the link to ucdavis.edu above.

Did Morrowind look amazing back in it's day? ( I ask because I really don't know, I played it after Oblivion, so now it looks like pooo. )

Yes, yes it did; back in 2002 when it was released, also you have to remember if it supports DX11 this game will continue to look amazing for who knows HOW long the amount of options aviable to modders omfg.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uavLefzDuQ

Also with that increase in graphical fidelity comes almost no hit to GPU performance if the engine uses dx9...what fail would that be.

I am really wishing and hoping that the PC version supports Direct x 11.

Do I actually think it will? No way, not even if Oblivion decides to freeze over.

Todd Howard (Game director for Skyrim) is an avid Xbox360 really devoted fan and if one of the development team suggested Directx 11 for the PC he would no doubt say "The time can be spent better elsewhere on something that all the consoles can enjoy instead of just the PC"

Makes me sad.

No, the unfortunate side effect of still making games for half-decade old hardware is that they tend to stick to half-decade old technology. And yet, people still think it's impressive. :\

In a similar thread ( http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1165336-skyrim-and-tesselation )...

We don't know, but it seems very unlikely to me.

Yeah, sadly. Skyrim seems like the perfect title to use tesselation and show what it could mean for a game. I hope they have some time left before 11-11 and some brave programmer gets adventurous.

Then be prepared to become disappointed.

Yeah Freddo is just guessing, he's not a employee of Bethesda, he's just a simple forum moderator and knows just the same as you and I know, Bethesda doesn't tell him anything more than they tell the public. When he says "Be prepared to be disappointed" he is just guessing that it won't happen..

Taken from his very own profile "While I am a moderator on these forums, I'm not an employee of gamesas. The views and opinions stated in my posts may or may not reflect those of Bethesda Softworks."

But with that said, it probably won't. With the game director being a console lover there is no way in the world that he would allow all the time and money it requires to implement Direct x 11 just for the PC to have it.. if only he was a PC gamer..

Yeah, it’s really sad that he wants to make games for the majority of people who actually buy his games, instead of the minority of people who whine on forums (loudly).

Money speaks louder than anything. Want to change their minds? Get the PC version of the game to sell enough for it to matter to them.

So uh wanting 2 year old technology to be implemented in a product we are buying is considered whining now?

Directx 9 was released in 2002.. It is almost a decade old.. It is disgusting, outdated, inefficient and unworthy of being part of Skyrim.. I am very sad new consoles haven't come out in time for TES5 because of how bad the game is going to look for console gamers.

Unfortunately, it's all current consoles can use so PC gamers have to put up with it until a new generation of consoles gets released that can support 10 and 11...

If it's considered whining for not wanting almost decade old technology to bottleneck my platform and make it look ten times worse than it has the potential to, then yes, I am going to whine until the cows come home mate!

And the PC version not selling enough for it to matter to them? What are you talking about?

The PC version of Morrowind and it's expansions outsold the Xbox by far and the PC version of Oblivion was not very far behind 360 sales, it beat PS3 sales.

The PS3 is the minority, not the PC... Not to mention Bethesda's roots lie with PC gaming, not consoles.. I don't think it's much to ask for Directx 11 instead of us being handed 9 year old Directx 9 tech because of the consoles.

Look at the difference in this video, PC Metro 2033 with Directx 11(2009 tech) enabled compared to Xbox360 graphics with Directx 9(2002 tech)..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGPrSKG0iUA

The difference is enormous! Imagine how beautiful Skyrim could be..

Source? ‘Cause I know for a fact that wasn’t the case for Fallout 3, and is not the case for almost any multi-platform title these days.

The PS3 is the minority, not the PC...

Not anymore.

It doesn’t matter where their “roots lie,” it matters who’s buying their games NOW. And the fact is, either console’s SKU outsells the PC SKU.

I tried but I can't find any Oblivion sales figures, I remember this from when they were around though. Take my word on it if you want or don't, up to you.

And may I ask why you think not anymore? Steam(Suppose you can call it the PC version of LIVE/PSN) has 30 million ACTIVE users at the moment(Same amount of active users as Xbox LIVE, Shown here - http://www.joystiq.com/2011/01/05/xbox-360-hits-50-million-worldwide-xbox-live-users-top-30-milli/ ) which means 30 million active PC gamers, the platform is not the minority you seem to think it is - http://news.bigdownload.com/2010/10/18/steam-surpasses-30-million-active-user-mark-reveals-a-little/

And don't go saying "it's because Steam is free" because those active LIVE users include silver(free) memberships.. PC gaming is just as powerful as 360 or PS3 gaming individually.

PC Gaming isn't going anywhere anytime soon, all it's done since the initial hit it took when 360/PS3 were released 5 years ago is pick up steam(pardon the pun) and grow stronger and stronger.

And may I ask why you think not anymore?

Because of the reality I quoted for Fallout 3, BGS’s most recent title (not Oblivion). The trend for Bethesda is clear. Why would they cater to the smallest portion of their market when the majority of sales for their last game came from the two consoles?

And yes, those forum numbers are meaningless, because they’re pretty much the opposite of the actual sales figures for Fallout 3. I know the forum is fun to speculate on, but it’s a VERY skewed perspective of the actual customer base for Bethesda’s games. Leads to that Internet echo chamber effect.

Indeed, as I said PC gaming is getting very strong and has finally recovered from the initial hit the consoles gave it.. Steam is the main reason, along with the consoles being so outdated now.

Until the new consoles are released (Which by what Microsoft has stated, won't be until at least 2013 or later) PC gaming is just going to continue getting stronger and most likely by the time new consoles are about come out, will have taken over both consoles individually in the amount of active gamers on the platform and sales.

When the new consoles are released I'm willing to make a bet that they won't be consoles like the 360 and PS3, they will be much more akin to PCs and have all the functions PCs do.

If anything is dieing in the next decade in gaming, It's consoles in their current form, not PCs.

http://software.intel.com/en-us/blogs/2010/04/19/hear-that-knocking-sound-its-pc-gaming/ is much http://www.techspot.com/news/42289-steam-generated-1-billion-in-2010.html than most would have you http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/23/physical-and-digital-distribution-sales-for-games-nearly-equal/.

If you make a game that is good, PC gamers will come. If you half-ass a port, don't be surprised when nobody buys it, for unlike on console the big, current, companies do not have a monopoly on gaming, with a 20-year back catalog and active indie and modding scenes.

Xbox 360 ? 55%
PS3 ? 28%
PC - 17%

And, if I had to guess, I’d say these figures (near launch time) are probably not completely accurate. If anything I’d be surprised if PC was actually that high—better than what I’ve heard for other multi-platform games. And this doesn’t even consider residual income from DLC, which I’d imagine got pirated for PC far more than purchased.

The bulk of BGS’s profits from Fallout 3 came from the consoles, not the PC. If you want a picture of the future of Skyrim, look no further than here.

The important part of that article is "According to sales figures". So many companies and retailers don't disclose sales figures that that immediately makes all 3 of those percentages near worthless.

No, it makes them not wholly accurate. But to just assume on wild faith that somehow they’re “near worthless” just because you don’t like what they say is bordering on asinine fatuity. They’re probably a good guide to the full picture, even if they’re not perfect. Unless you really think there’s some “company or retailer” that’s just selling a TON of PC copies and not crowing about it.

Really I just wish someone from BSW would come out and TELL us exactly how much each SKU sold so none of us would have to argue about this. Sure, some folks might not be happy about the real figures *coughPCplayerscough* but at least we’d know.

maybe if more people actually BUY games, not just rip them or download them from pirate sites, you wouldnt be having this conversations, I'm sorry PC people, you brought this to yourselfs..maybe it's easy for me to say ( play on xbox myself) , but I'd still want all of you to be happy with what you bought, it's just not likely as downloading gam,es becomes more and more populair, and you don't have that problem on xbox or ps3..so yeah, it's your own faults.. ( not talking to people who buy pc games btw, don't feel offended please)

Fallout 3 is not a good example. Sadly, it was HEAVILY pirated on the PC because of the "Games for windows LIVE" fiasco (A horrible, extremely broken and buggy cheap version of 360 LIVE for the PC) which was thrown out for the next Fallout game, New Vegas. Unfortunately New Vegas sales aren't a good idea either because it wasn't actually solely developed by Bethesda, they only helped, and it was full of bugs and glitches on the PC version and was passed over by many gamers.

You also have to remember Fallout 3 was not sold on Steam until recently - Which is why PC gaming is so strong at the moment. If it had been sold on Steam I easily see the sales figures being 10-15% higher in comparison if not more.

I'm sure that if you saw the sales charts for Fallout 3 recent times(Probably not available), it would be much higher than 17% and most likely 30-40% (Because of it being sold on Steam), not lower as you estimate.
