Graphical remakes of the first 2 Elder scrolls?

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 6:47 am

My brother miraculously beat daggerfall and I couldn't even remotely make anything out in the game when I made the attempt at it so long ago. Which brings me to my question, will there ever be a graphical remake of the first two games for people who had a hard time playing the first ones?

Well, never say never, but I highly doubt it. Bethesda seems like the type of company that would rather produce new content than remake old stuff.

Daggerfall is a great game, but it probably takes some getting used to for someone more accustomed to modern day graphics. I'd say give it another shot and be patient with it.

I don't believe you. I'm legally blind and I can see what's going on in Daggerfall just fine.

If Lucius is able to finish DaggerXL we'll all get our graphical remake. Perhaps he or someone else will eventually give Arena a similar treatment.

Dunno... Lucius was really unique in doing this much without ever slowing down, but lately he seems to stuck in RL. I'm afraid the curse of all fan-made remakes had caught up with him after all. Maybe the decision to build a common platform for DaggerXL along with three radically different other games wasn't the wisest on his part.

This comes up with every game.

This is the just of it. The fans of the game wouldn't like a remake, because a remake would have to change it to meet modern selling points....which means it isnt the same game anymore.

In the end, all you end up with is a new game that reuses an old story.....and is pointless to do when you can just make a new story.

Bethesda has better things to do with their time than remake games that are already great as they are. I love Daggerfall, but it doesn't need to be remade.

They could, and i would love them to do it. Most Elder Scroll fans really have not played any of those. So it would be a really good idea to bring them to consoles with new graphics surely fans on consoles would buy it because they love Elder Scrolls. As for PC gamers they would say no, but we are not talking about you. Bethesda cares for all their fans not just you. So releasing a remake would be good for console gamers.

Not to be the really imperious sounding guy on the Past Games forum and whatnot, but if you're the type that can't tolerate Arena and Daggerfall's dated graphics, I don't know how much of a chance you'll stand with handling the games themselves. Great as they are, they're really clunky and it takes a fair bit of patience to get used to them.

If you just literally think the game can be painful to look at sometimes, I can understand what you mean. Daggerfall renders to a 320x200 window (as was customary for most DOS games of the time), but that doesn't work so well in a 3D game where you can look at things from any and every angle - things are a lot sloppier. I highly doubt Bethesda plans to remake them, but a http://xlengine.com/ called DaggerXL has been in the works with higher resolutions and early support for replacing graphics.

It's nowhere near playable yet, though. Unfortunately Lucius seems to have gone AWOL for a while, but this is customary for fan revival projects.

Maybe the decision to build a common platform for DaggerXL along with three radically different other games wasn't the wisest on his part.
Yeah. I have a lot of respect for the guy, but really? Outlaws and Blood? Pretty sure those games already have other sourceports for them out there, and if not the communities are small and insignificant enough that he shouldn't be worrying so much about them. DaggerXL is definitely the one everybody wants the most.

DaggerXL is not a source port. In order for it to be one of those Lucius would have to be porting the source code to something else. He can't because it doesn't exist. He's building his own engine from scratch. It just reads Daggerfall's data.

As for his choice of games, he did the others because he likes them. That's a good thing; people work better when they're interested in the work. His choice to use one engine for multiple games also means he's building it in such a way that it can be modified to support even more when it's complete.

Ok there lies in the problem, "meet modern selling points". By the way, since it was brought up, would Bethsheda shut down any fan made verions of an updated Daggerfall by any chance? It would be a shame if they did.

Daggerfall is so fundamentally flawed by today's standards, that any type of remake would be a huge waste of time and resources, unless the only thing in common it has is the name.

The problems I had with Daggerfall were; the repetition/procedural/random content, the game is an ocean of mediocrity.

AFAIR, in DaggerXL's case they unofficially agreed to "don't ask, don't tell".

It's something about the vastness of it all that makes the game so appealing, in my eyes. Even though this isn't really the case, there's very much a sense that there's always things happening in the world because of how mundane many of the quests are. Your character has to steadily build up a reputation, but even then, you can just as easily step over into another kingdom where you're a complete stranger. The lack of any true "completionism" in the game (save for the main quest) is why it's so enjoyable to play. Even moreso if you enjoy roleplaying.

AFAIR, in DaggerXL's case they unofficially agreed to "don't ask, don't tell".
Yeah. Although I've spoken with a few former staff members who worked on Daggerfall (the artist Mark Jones, and the composer Eric Heberling) and they're very keen on seeing the project fully realized themselves. I imagine if DaggerXL were ever completed, a lot of Bethesda's developers may become a lot less productive.
