Graphics borked completely (9800GTX+)

Post » Sun Apr 04, 2010 3:50 pm

My graphics are completely borked, it recommends me to play on medium (which I'm pretty sure is about 6800 level?) when I'm running a 9800GTX+, 4GB DDR2, 3GHz Wolfdale at 3.4 (or 3.6, I can't recall)

Game loads up in 640x480 and when I set it to high settings and 1024x768 (and any settings including the defaulted VGA) the game menus load and the hud loads (compass, health bars, character creation menu) but the ingame graphics don't, it's just a dark greenish screen. So I can't even accurately create a character. Everything but the graphics loads (there's even a crosshair) but it's just this black/green screen, and when I hit ESC to go to options the background becomes purely white.

DxDiag after the break but I've got the digital GOTY english deluxe thingy version that I just bought off Steam (Quakecon sale), I previously had the game on PS3 and figured at about £7 it was an offer I couldn't pass up on PC.

edit: 64bit Windows Vista Ultimate with latest service pack.

upped it to my site^ too many characters to post without breaking it up in to millions of chunks.

Oblivion is older than the 9800gtx so the launcher won't recognise your card to know which settings are optimal. So it picks the default of "medium".

That shouldn't stop you from manually changing the settings to high in the launcher.

I have no idea what would be causing your green screen problem. I've never heard of anyone encountering that. Do you have problems running any other games?

It detects my card in the launcher that has the medium, high etc settings as 9800GTX/GTX+ which is the same recognition my card gets on any game.
And no problems on any game, been playing Mafia II demo, WoW, StarCraft 2 all yesterday alone and no problems, all on near enough the highest settings (only shadows off on WoW and Mafia II was on second highest settings) so I can't figure out what's wrong. No other game has any real issues, heck I can play Crysis on high with very stable frame rates and some AA.
No other game on Steam has any problems on my PC bar Fallout 3 ironically. And Fallout 3 has completely different, unrelated issues.

And I'm pretty sure Oblivion has been patched to recognize my card?

I have a 9800gtx (1gb version) myself so I can confirm it does work with Oblivion and works great.

I'm using 182.50 driver since that's recommended as best for 'older' games (like oblivion).

- I am running windows XP tho and I don't know how happy that driver is with vista 64bit (it might svck and you'd be better off trying a newer one).

If the card wasn't out at Oblivion's release then it won't be recognized by the game, GPU recognition wasn't added with any of the patches.

Since other games work fine, your best bet is to do a complete reinstall if your GPU driver. Uninstall it via control panel (take out all of the different bits), then do a check with Driver Sweeper. Reboot, and download the latest driver.

If that doesn't work, try rolling back to previous drivers.

Nah, that's defaulting to default settings because it can't recognize it.

And I can't tell what your drivers are from that picture, it's just the graphical settings for the game. According to your dxdiag, your drivers are from July 15th of last year, so you need an update. Besides, driver installations can become corrupted. If I were you, I'd do a complete uninstall before installing the latest ones.

So it was an issue specific to the steam version?

Glad you could get it sorted out :)
