PC Graphics compared to XBOX 360/PS3

Post » Sat Feb 06, 2010 12:43 am

What would be the settings be on the xbox 360? High/2x antialising? I can't find any yt videos with hd quality that shows the graphics.

I'm asking this because my m11x can only play on medium settings and it looks fine although I'd like to know what the settings would be on xbox.

For comparison, Xblock graphics in HD/720 (video goes outside at 8 minutes) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CRR-B9vn_FE

But seriously now. You would give up http://www.newvegasnexus.com/ for a few more pixels on the screen?

A computer that can run NV and look good doesn't have to be mondo expensive. Looking good when playing and 'top graphics settings' are, at least imo, two different things.
More importantly, the pc has console commands and mods to fix/get around a lot of bugs and potential issues, where the consoles do not. And while I love this game, there's a good chance you'll run into some of those bugs. You may not, but...a good chance.

But if your pc-buying budget is, say, pretty much non-existent :) consoles can look decent overall from what I've seen. But as mentioned, it depends a lot on the TV itself.

I play New Vegas in 800x600 with the graphics ramped up to max on everything. Smooth baby. I've also played it in high-rez widescreen with the gfx turned down, and it's.. jittery. Can't say my enjoyment is ruined by not running it in imax mode :)

[edit: removed irrelevant comment about screens]

As for graphics, New Vegas isn't an amazing looking game either way, but the console version is probably set to medium-high-ish settings while PC can have Ultra.

The most significant difference i can think of is the loading. I've been watching someone's console NV let's play on youtube and the load times almost make me cry.

I seriously doubt the 360 version has any kind of AA.

Not all of us have the money to build something that can run on ultra genius :P it prolly takes at least a quad core nvidia hd 3 series of some sort (one of those random number combos) with water cooled CPU.

I don't know how much quality you need out of F:NV, but as an example of the kind of PC you need to run it, I have:

CPU: E8400 (Core2 Duo 3ghz)
Memory: 4gbytes
Video card: Geforce 9600

And this is what the game looks like on medium-level settings at a solid 60 frames/second:

http://momaw.kikaimegami.com/fnvq2.png

If you wanted to sacrifice some smoothness on the framerate, you could crank the detail up further. A 2 year old PC like this will set you back about 500$.

So. Yeah. I don't know what you all consider an "expensive" PC or what constitutes "good" graphics, but there's some data so you can make up your own mind. For me I say that http://momaw.kikaimegami.com/fnvq3.png should be your primary consideration, but maybe I'm weird.

Ha, just the other day I was commenting to somebody that the engine could handle sand storms just fine if somebody cared to mod it in. :D

I built my i7-920 1.5 years ago for about $1000...but that doesn't include the monitor & graphic card. Probably cheaper now, dunno. No water cooling necessary, haha. But that's building it from parts yourself, not buying pre-made. Just tossing that out there for comparison to the "maybe $500" price.

I don't know what you all consider an "expensive" PC or what constitutes "good" graphics,

It's funny because I generally don't care too much about the overall graphic "look" of a game, but stuff like pronounced jaggies drives me crazy these days. Other than that, as long as it looks sharp and clear w/good contrast I'm happy.
Like mentioned, FNV w/out mods is never going to look graphic-uber, but it can look pretty nice in certain lighting conditions w/HDR, AA/AF, high view distances and LOD land quality higher than 100 etc.

Nevada Skies is pretty cool. I also used the Imaginator mod to make NV Skies gratingly over-saturated colors more tolerable. Some of the color filters NV Skies uses does horrible things to skin tones & I don't like cartoony saturation. But the rain and sand storms make it worth it. I also made the Pip boy light brighter because those nights are way too dark for me. lol

Uh, Fallout is by no means a high-end game. Any decent desktop from the last 3-4 years should be able to handle high-ultra.

But I still can't play Fallout 3 on high, it's just too intensive for my machine. Granted, that's probably down to my cheap gfx card, if I had a £200 card then I've no doubt I could run everything on high/widescreen/aa/50" plasma.

Fallout NV really isnt that demanding. Most PCs can run atleast at the settings of a console. (Also size of screen doesnt matter, the resolution matters. If it is in 720p it will run either at 1366x768 or 1280x720. If its 1080p then it runs at 1920x1080.)

Remember that videos, like screenshots, can be misleading...tho usually towards the worse side. On YouTube tho, the small window size can make it look a bit better than it might in person. To me that video looks fine in most spots but some of the outdoor stuff was kinda blurry or something. (3nd edit:if I put the vid on full-screen it looks terrible...)

It should, but due to that wonderful Gamebryo engine (edit or maybe some other reason, I don't know), sometimes it doesn't. My pc eats most everything else for breakfast but the 'stutter' or whatever it is on FNV becomes pretty annoying with every tiny little setting on max (at 1920x1080).

I'd imagine the ps3's graphics may be pretty awesome regarding the fact that it can play blu-ray. But then again I have no real Idea

You realize that this is anologous to saying that the fastest car is the one with the best radio reception, right? I.e., totally insane. Ability to display a pre-packaged video stream has nothing to do with the ability to render a realtime 3D game. :|
