Now, these aren't the worst I've had happen. Usually it's long thin stretches, and in larger numbers. Always triangular, or at least sharp edged like this. Never seen it happen with the sky or a distant thing like this before, though.

Saving the game, quitting to desktop, then restarting the game and loading cures the issue, but it'd still be awesome to figure out how to prevent it.

Don't worry my friend i'm having pretty much the exact same problem, here's my thread which pretty much dropped deep in to "threadhell" (the traffic on this board is ridiculous). http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1133501-weird-glitching-in-graphics/page__p__16595355__fromsearch__1&#entry16595355 Some guys suggested to me that i try clean my computer because the problem is most likely caused by a overheated graphic card. So i'm gonna "pop the hood" on my pc today, and with some help of a friend of mine over phone i'll try cleaning it as best i can. Hopefully that will fix it.

yeah those pictures are classic results from overheating - power off - disconnect the mains cable and clean your PC.

using a can of compressed air to blow out the dust is safest but you can use a vacuum cleaner if you're real careful not
to touch the motherboard. touch the nozzle to a heatsink to svck out all the fluff is okay.

I have a temperature monitor on the front of my case, though. CPU has never gone higher than 92f, and my harddrive has never gone higher than 85. I've played games that work my computer WAY more than this game ever could, so it couldn't be a heating issue.

I would like to add that I've only had this computer build since about May, and since then I've opened it up and taken the canned air to it twice. I really honestly don't see how it could be a heat issue.

On another note, I started turning the game on through the Launcher instead of the .bat file I was using to bypass it (so I wouldn't loose my ini changes for DarN's UI mod). I only played for an hour or so after going back to using the Launcher, but since then I never got a single graphical glitch. Stretching or otherwise. I think it's a very real possibility that running the game through a .bat file to skip Steam starting up the Launcher actually screws with the game.

If I'm wrong, I'll post back to say so.

Nope, it's not the .bat file workaround to skip the Launcher that's causing it. I think this thing is just random as all hell. Currently my CPU is running at 96.5 degrees F, and that's well within acceptable temps. I just don't know what the heck is going on.

I had a similar problem when i installed the Nevda_skies_0-1-35998 mod. Everything returned to normal when i diabled this mod. It might be worth going through each mod that you have loaded and seeing if they are having an effect.

I DO have Nights Are Darker installed......it's the only graphical mod I'm using. But at the same time, I was having these issues before I started using any graphical mods.

I don't have these issues, but, my game does crash if the graphics are taking a hit. I've noticed though, that, it crashes at around 750MB usage. Always. I'm beginning to think that crashes aren't because of the quad core thing, but, the overall memory usage of the graphics card.

Sounds like a bad realloc()

Wait, quad-cores are having issues? Well crap, my processor's an i7 920 quad-core.....I didn't realize that quads were having an issue....hell, maybe that's what my issue is....?

Edit: where do i monitor how many MB it's using? maybe I can see if that's what my issue is?

Yeah, definitely not heat. I not only dusted out my computer a few hours ago, but I changed it's location to an even better location with more airspace around it. And to top it off, the temp of the CPU was only 87 when it froze/crashed this time.

The normal premise says that you shouldn't report bugs and expect help when using mods. So you probably also shouldn't report bugs, when using .bat files that bypass game mechanics. The bug you experience with stretching NPCs is present since Oblivion and is not related to overheating, nor is the other bug. I guess at one point you've get a corrupted savegame and maybe even the whole game is damaged because of using the .bat file, dunno. It could also be your graphic device that's responsible fur this bug. Either it seriously got damaged, or is short from getting seriously damaged. You should try to clean your hardware though, despite my advices.

I would try to reinstall New Vegas and maybe Steam first and if that doesn't work reinstall your whole OS.

I used to see that in Oblivion. It was usually related to a mod.

I have seen a stretched out texture in vanilla FO:NV though. It was a wall inside the Primm hotel. If I walked around it a certain way the texture would get stretchy sort of like your picture. I only saw it that one time.

I've already ruled out the cause being mods in the topic I made about the game http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1130993-game-locks-up-occasionally/page__p__16572022__fromsearch__1&#entry16572022

Mods are not the cause, nor is using the .bat file. No offense, SirDrinkAlot, but you sound like you're sending me on an overly complicated wild goose chase there. Not to shoot you down if you're actually trying to be helpful, but seriously, how will reinstalling STEAM do anything? Or Windows 7? Advice Overkill much?

Alrighty, update on the issue.

Everyone seems to have been right, it IS a heating issue. I just downloaded HWMonitor a few minutes ago and turned it on, then turned on New Vegas. After a few minutes, I alt-tabbed out of the game to look at the temp reading.......My video card, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 285, maxed out at 156 F.

How in the HELL is my video card not melting or just plain dying on me?

Now, I guess, is an even more important question: How in the heck can I get my card to STOP getting this hot?

Just found out that 156 degrees F isn't that hot for a GPU. I really think it's the game causing these issues.

Full detail on what I've figured out:

It's guaranteed not a heat issue. For one thing, the highest my GPU gets playing New Vegas is about 156f, which I've found isn't that hot at all for my card. For another, I ran this program called FurMark, a program specifically for benchmarking and stressing a video card. I ran it on stability mode with the option called "Xtreme burning" turned on, at 1920x1080, 16xAA, and Post Processing turned on. I ran it for around 20 minutes, it heated my card up good. It maxed out at 89c, but stayed stable at 88c for well over half the time. Not a single graphical artifact or driver crash.

It is NOT a heat issue that is causing these problems in New Vegas, it is the game itself causing it.

I got this issue after I got a "Steam is updating" message yesterday - although, it didn't seem to update anything (and NV was running fine before). Definitely not a heating issue because I'd only just booted my PC and launched the game moments earlier. I got the smearing effect, the game crashed the graphics drivers, caused a total system lockup and I had to power down. I haven't tried it again since.

Maybe we'll get lucky and this is one of the things the big patch that's coming out soon is gonna fix.

Just rechecked this thread and I hold with my first answer but more specifically I think the problem lies with the memory on your graphics card rather than the Core.
Temp sensors dont tell the whole picture if the only sensor on the card is in the core and its the memory or memory controller thats getting too hot.

If you are running any mods you have to isolate those of course - either uninstall them or rename the relevant folders so you are running 'vanilla' FNV.

You need to remember the sandbox nature of this game means data is *constantly* being loaded and unloaded - the CPU and graphics *cores*
don't get taxed - my older q6600 is only 40% used and my GTX460 is 60% used (according to MSI afterburner) but theres constant traffic of data
hard drive > system RAM > video RAM and *that* does push certain parts of your system hard.

None of the mods I use are graphical. Couldn't be mods causing it, period. As to the memory, I doubt it. I ran FurMark for 20 minutes, not a single issue at all, even though over half that time was at 88c. I'm fairly certain that such a benchmarking/stressing program is intended to try to do just what you said my card may be doing. But, you seem to know more about the tech than I do, so I'll just leave it at that. Can't argue when I don't know, huh?

Edit: Come to think of it, I could always do with a defragging of my harddrive, too, eh?
