Lets face it---they are still stuck with old technology. The Creation engine is just an improvement (a good one, I'll admit) but it still has a LOT of limitations (no ladders, water falls through objects, physics still svcks, animations are better but still iffy, limited draw distance for groundcover, etc...)

Ladder, water through objects, and animations have nothing to do with the Creation Engine's limitations, or because of the 360. It just shows you dont play on 360 and have a lot of prejudices and misconceptions about it. TES games just dont do interactable ladders, period. Why not? Ask Pete Hines.

I'd love to see it man because I have my game completely maxed out and stuff still appears at my feet out of nowhere. Did you edit files?

Go to Documents\My Games\Oblivion\ and open Oblivion.ini, raise the following values to whatever your PC can handle:

fGrassEndDistance=8000.0000
fGrassStartFadeDistance=7000.0000

If you never edited your INI file in Oblivion, you sorta played with Xbox settings. There are so many settings in there that can be raised (not in the game), some should be multiplied by the hundreds or even thousands.

Expect the same of Skyrim, if you want it to use your PC at maximum capabilities, you're going to have to do research and edit/mod stuff.

..what? You've apparently never played Oblivion on the PC because you could push back the grass draw distance by quite a lot, and there were mods to make it infinite. So yeah.

thats what I was telling him

1. The game is in first-person so the grass has to be more detailed to look good generally, which leads to shorter render distance.
2. Current hardware limitations, on consoles and computers. (Some people cannot afford a beast machine, even if computers are $200 more than consoles)
3. The game isn't fully optimized yet, they're are in late-alpha to beta right now, so not everything is smooth, and there are still graphical bugs.

It's 360 hardware. They're devs not magicians. And I love RDR, but the grass in that game was low low poly, very short, and sparse. With the right ini tweaks you can recreate RDR grass in skyrim and see it for miles!!! :ahhh:

It's not just the grass, there is constant pop up everywhere. But it's to be expected, no?

You can get a small idea of the sort of graphics settings that will be available to PC users here:

Oblivion Tweak Guide: http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_5.html
Fallout 3 Tweak Guide: http://www.tweakguides.com/Fallout3_5.html
Fallout New Vegas Tweak Guide: http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/new-vegas-tweak-guide

Beyond the in-game graphics settings, it was also possible to further enhance the settings for the vanilla game by adjusting certain values in the .ini file using a text editor.

In-game Grass Draw Distance setting:

This is pretty annoying but I don't think it'll be a big issue unless you're on the plains where you're supposed to be able to see far away

In Oblivion it was fixable with a setting the distance and a good graphics card.

I don't believe that they're going to be using speedtree in Skyim, so I imagine that foliage will be quite different.

My old NVidia GeForce 6150SE run New Vegas in it's lowest settings with some .Ini tweaks.

wow, you still own a Geforce 6? Man, that's...OLD.

I remember that the 6600GT was my second Nvidia card ever, the first being a Geforce 4 Ti...and for various reasons I've always owned at least one Nvidia card of each gen (except the GTX 2xx and 4xx...I skipped those).

Wow, that is quite impressive. From what I've read, the GeForece 6 series were pretty powerful, guess that was true. Can't be looking all that great though :P

Could you please specify a source for this?

Console are running some pretty old CPU/GPU tech, so It's hard to cram all of those visuals in there, but Bethesda has done a great job it seems.

Well, I just hope they'll optimise SKyrim to get the best of the consoles in that case.

Why does grass still only render 20 feet in front of you, it's exactly like oblivion you would think that they would have atleast improved it a minor amount over the years. Guess not :/

I can only hope that the pc version will allow farther rendering distances.

...Because that's all consoles can handle. And yeah, pretty sure Todd said that the PC will have a longer draw distance.

I don't know why they can't just smooth it out a bit, I know they can't make the grass distance very far but at least make it fade instead of just appear instantly.

By quite alot I think you mean about 25 feet at the most. We shouldn't need a mod for freaking grass when a pc is easily capable of twice what they are giving us.

Yeah a warning that many computers can't handle it would work fine. In Descent II for example you could chose like 800x600 display resolution. When doing so it warned that no current PCs could handle the graphics being that high. At that time it was a very pretty slideshow though.

For those that are saying there is something great about RDR grass, here are a few samples showcasing how horrible it is.

I think this one is the worst. Poor grass in front (the best they have to offer), and then shortly after that, copied grass. And then after that, copied bushes. It just looks like a terrible landscape in that pic.
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1070&screenshot=Red+Dead+Redemption&image=3

You can see the "bush line" in this shot. And the up close grass again looks terrible.
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1070&screenshot=Red+Dead+Redemption&image=9

While Skyrim has a few flaws in their scenery graphics, this is just pitiful. I've rarely seen a game do it this poorly. Certaily Skyrim owns this game all over the place.
http://www.game-debate.com/games/index.php?g_id=1070&screenshot=Red+Dead+Redemption&image=10

This might be the picture people are referring to when they say Red Dead has some nice grass (I really Don't know). I've played a ton of Red Dead and have always been acutely aware of how terrible the grass looked. But it's obvious in this pic how sparse they made it. Does it have it further away? Yes. Does it look splotchy and not like real grass at all? Also yes.

Skyrim appears to be striking a balance of playablility for consoles just like Red Dead was. Fortunately for us PC users, we will be able to affect through options and ini files the most important aspects of the graphics to us. Poor Red Dead users (like myself) had to put up with terrible graphics aspects because the systems that Rockstar released the game on were terrible.

I thought this thread would be about the fact that grass was there at all, or was too tall. I can't begin to count how many things I lost in the grass. Kill a bandit with a Daedric Bow in the grass, well good luck ever finding that bow. It was just really bad sometimes.

I do hope they fixed this someway.
