Gravity and interaction with large inanimate object?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 12:04 pm

Just some queries about physics.

Gravity in combat
1. Random scenario: You are charged by a Mammoth. He smacks you with his tusks. How far do we fly? Will it be the same as getting knocked over by a rat or will you fly a realistic distance. Mammoths are big creatures.

2. Powerful strikes
If your character has super high strength, can you send a similar sized foe flying?
Will spells send foes flying?

Walls/Tables
Say for example, you hit a guy and he goes flying into a wall/tree, does he get extra damage from the wall? They're hard things.

BGS is using the Havok physics engine, so I guess Skyrim will have realistic physics.

I hope for all of this. I want to be hit by a mammoth into a goblin, and have him fly into a tree, taking additional damage.

This was basically in Oblivion.

Physics work similar on Nirn as they do on Earth, except that Magic can bend or break all of our natural physical laws; gravity, electromagnetism, the strong and weak nuclear force, at least lore wise anyway.

They need to bring back slow fall, but adjust it for lateral use too. You get whacked by a large enemy and instead of going flying, you slowly fall back and land on your feet.

Maybe athletics should decide wether you land on your feet or not ?

Surely that would depend on your athletics (acrobatics). If you have low athletics, you should get flung like a rag doll, but if you have high athletics you can control your flight and land on your feet.

For an agile character sure, but for a caster, you could use Slow Fall to negate this.

I wonder if magic spells will be able to throw things like they did in oblivion and if so will it be greater/less than physically interacting with an object or if there will be a spell effect that's specifically meant to move objects and if the magicka required will be related to the size of the object.

how about having large objects that can be pushed or pulled like big boulders, pillars and the like at the requirement of a large strength stat? it could be good in terms of puzzles for the ones are more in tune with warrior playstyles or even used as an environmental weapon, for example...pushing a large rock over a precipice to strike a mammoth from above.

I got chewed out for saying people should go flying. It's not all that realistic. If a mammoth knocked you through the air, you'd be dead or crippled? What's a realistic distance?

They're not using Havok this time, confirmed.

I beg to differ.

We still use some middleware that we like, such as Havok. We're not just using their physics this time, but their animation system, Havok Behavior.

Some people interpret this as Todd's admission they're NOT using it. But i think it's quite the contrary and quite unequivocal.

That doesn't mean that the game won't have physics...
