Any lore on him? Was he present before Oblivion and could you wear the mask and be him before oblivion?

Invision can't you write a proper BBcode parser! The quotes should be treated as posts, and contain incomplete tags internally. It's not that difficult for crying out loud!

edit2:

Right then we won't quote the funny.

Accordingt to TES V lore, Greyfox is limited to Cyrodil. The highest rank in Daggerfalls Theif faction was : "Master Thief".
I guess each region is a separate guild. Anyway, it can also be a cheap thing from the games creators to buff the lousy Cyrodil.

in cyrodill is the counsil ,the emperor ,ocato and lots of other important people,i supose it'd be a natural place for the headmaster of a guild.

form there he/she could influence some really important people

UESP is like Wiki not really such a trusting source but then I dont think we can be sure that he is their leader as in the man in charge of it all.

no, we have no "evidence" for it. but all ingame thieves guild members seem to consider him a god.

and lets face it. NO ONE else has ever come'n up with a working plan to steal an elder scroll.

i also belive to have heard (ingame) that the first gray fox was the headmaster.

also;which fox are we talking about? corvus umbranox is the latest,so if the gray fox in the early years was the headmaster, things have probebly changed by now

I was thinking about just the one that wears/has the mask in possession as that person is supposed to be the headmaster.

i belive it works like royalty;the one with the mask is the leader(this is an xample, not an xplenation)

cuz we're not sure how many people has worn the mask it's a quite hard topic.

to become grey fox the player had to steal an elder scroll VERY HARD TO DO

the first one stole from a deadric prince(sess?) VERY VERY HARD TO DO

i belive that a person capable of that would be the perfect thief, thus becoming the headmaster.

remember there is more than just one guild that deales with thievery(or so i've heard)

Yes but the Thieves Guild as in the one we have mostly played in in some way or another.

And I dont think you really have to steal a Elder Scroll to become the Grey Fox you just have to get your hands on the Mask kind of.

i was refering to oblivion's thieves guild questline
there you have to steal an elder scroll,

i've never heard of anyone being the grey foxes superior, therefore its probebly safe to asume he's at the top of the guild(though that might be wrong)

Yes I believe him to be the top notch of them as well, I'm just messing around a little and thinking for myself at the moment and also see if I can lurk any information I didn't know about could pop up.

But yeah I have played the Thieves Guild in Oblivion. Which was a rather fun quest line.

Nobody has had too before. Barenziah had her own collection in Arena. :)

Still stealing one really isn't that hard considering the only actual obstacle is a door that can only be opened with a key. :P

And arranging for someone to receive one and then prevent them from getting there on time.

I just think gray fox is one thing the player can be that's totally recognizable in a way. like if you are arch mage or listener it will never say in the game's books you were the leader. but gray fox, that's something you can be and it's part of lore now. that doesn't really make sense but the point is as the gray fox you are not an unnamed hero but the greatest thief in the world. i think that's what makes it cool in a wayI want more lore. anyone RP as him seriously?

I always wanted to think that the Gray Fox was more like a front figure of the guild - he was the most revered thief, has the highest "rank", but isn't the one in charge of the guild. That would fall onto the Cyrodiil Master Thief; http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Fathis_Ules. Just like Gentleman Jim Stacey was "Master Thief" in Morrowind. I don't know if you could become leader of the guild in Daggerfall, but as been said, it was the highest rank there as well.

By the way, is there anyone else than me that has troubled reading the thread title without thinking "gay fox love"?

But that would mean you loose your rank after you become gray fox, since the rank before that is master thief. I don't like that dark elf, he pisses me off

Emer Dareloth (Dunmer?) was the first Gray Fox, he stole the cowl. Prior to that he was probably the thieves guild head in the same way Stacey was in Morrowind, or, as a book in Ob implies, was a lone agent who built the cyrodiil guild after stealing it. The cowl would have been passed down to the next head, and over 300 years the guild would've evolved differenly from Stacey's, spurred on by this belief in a semi divine leader.

In my opinion, the Gray Fox was oblivion's only good contribution to lore (apart from SI) and whatever thieves guild exists will feel odd in the next game without the cowl.

The true power is not the Gray Fox. The Thieves Guild is a mighty convienience for any power looking to keep white collar crime under control and make a buck too. The organization stays "clean" for the most part, with the exception of individual chapters that may dabble in other crime, respecting Imperial laws that don't pertain to theft. It is enough to make one wonder...
