Great computer but Oblivion runs awful (at all settings)

THis is frustrating - downloaded GOTY Deluxe from Direct to Drive. Have PS3 Skyrim and worried about lag, I thought I'd play through Oblivion again.

Well - it stutters and the frame rate is awful. Opening sequence with Mythic Dawn is like a slow moving flip book.

Running my gf's PS: Core Duo 2.0 ghz, 3 MB RAM, GeForce 8600, and #$(* Vista.

This computer wastes the one I played Oblivion (which ran it perfectly when it came out) on originally way back when.

I am running Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul, too. But I disabled it and that didn't help. The framerate/lag is the same AT ALL SETTINGS. In high quality, it looks fine but stutters just as much as the lowest setting.

What gives - I LOVED Oblivion except for one horrible flaw, I hated the leveling system, ruined all sense of immersion. Thought this would help clear that up...because...I could play it on PS3 but...i don't like leveling.

So what's the deal - is there some way I can get it to work? Does it not get duos?

thanks

Post a dxdiag.
XP: Go to Start->run, type “dxdiag” and hit enter. Click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

VISTA/Windows 7: Go to Start->Search, type “dxdiag” and hit enter, click the Save All Information button near the bottom right. This will save a Dxdiag.txt in C:\ by default. Then open the dxdiag.txt and copy/paste the information into your post.

While the 8600GT was considered mid-high nearly 5 years ago, its a rather low end card these days. OOO is a very demanding overhaul. The game really only uses one thread on a CPU to its full potential. It may use some of a second thread, but not fully.

Actually, if that is a laptop, and I'll bet that it is, it may have only an 8600m GS, which is hardly any better than an 8400 GS. The 8400 GS was a cheap card closer in performance to a 7300 GS than to any of the desktop 8600 cards, and would be quite slow in this game, and a laptop processor could very well be running slower than its max-rated core speed due to being set up for maximum battery life, not maximum performance, making the CPU a potential slowdown factor, as well.

P. S. Although I see additional comments showing our OP to have been logged in since posting his request here, the lack of followup in the past 23 hours indicates to me that I probably have struck the correct answer to the problem.

I was thinking about Ball of Fire's web site a couple of hours ago, and his stuff would help the OP here. I've already set aside the URL for it, but Google can find it. He collected a list of helpful mods names to help improve performance for Low Quality hardware.

Run his name all together Balloffire Performance Modlist
