Greatest guitarist of all time

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:06 pm

I'm liking all the love for Robert Johnson in this thread. He played the guitar in a way that no-one has matched since.

It's said that Keith Richards once played a Robert Johnson record for Mick Jagger. Jagger liked it and asked "Who's the bass player?". Keith smiled and said "There isn't one." :P

Johnson was the only reason I got into the Blues. I heard Crossroads in a record store and fell in love. His guitar work is one of the most amazing things you can hear. For those who have not yet heard his mastery

That said this thread has had a lot of mentions of artists like Mark Knopfler and Chet for a video game forum. I am surprised, to say the least.

For the uninitiated:
Link Wray
Rumble

Ace Of Spades

Duane Eddy

Pepe

Dance with the Guitar Man

Roger McGuinn

Turn! Turn! Turn!

Eight Miles High

I was very surprised that not everyone just said SLASH RULEZ, these guys know what they are talking about. On the subject of those songs, those are all great songs. Here are my favs from them

RJ is the master of the blues guitar. Without him we would never have seen Rock 'n' Roll or hard rock or heavy metal. It just wouldn't have been there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yd60nI4sa9A better than Hendrix? I say yes

I agree.

Like I said before, this thread has defied my expectations. Talking about Robert Johnson and, Bossa Nova legends on a video game forum? It almost boggles the mind.

Also, Lonnie Mack

Don Bradman would be a better anology, although I do think Hendrix was overrated, he more 'invented heavy metal (listen to Voodoo chile slight return) rather than epitomised it

I'm proud that I'm probably gonna be the only person who gets the Bradman anology :P

Does anyone else just find Hendrix, Malmsteen et al to be incredibly boring? Sure, their stuff is technically good, but it doesn't mean anything. It's all just pointless and self-congratulatory.

Yeah, pretty much. Especially Malmsteen and other 'virtuoso' guitarists. It's nice and brilliantly played but I couldn't give a damn about it. Petrucci from Dream Theater can fall into that trap too but will then play something like at the end of Count of Tuscany which makes me think he is great. I always felt the solo in "One" was pure brilliant in terms of feeling and how it works within the song, likewise with Fade to Black - although I'm probably uncool for liking Metallica ;)

Edit: Townshend is massively superior than a lot in this thread are giving him credit for. He isn't the greatest soloist but a great musician.

Anybody who thinks Hendrix was overrated never played guitar, or just doesn't know anything about the instrument. You know why Townsend used to destroy his guitar? because he couldn't play the damn thing.

I think Hendrix is obviously a great guitarist (I have played for 7 years) but I think some of the titles he's won are a little overrated. But I totally agree with the whole Townshend thing. He has some cool licks, but overall his playing isn't the best (puts up flame shield).
I especially hate his writing, after I heard Tommy I just couldn't like The Who no matter what I tried. If you compare Tommy's horrific writing to the masterpiece that is The Wall you will see who's lyrically superior. Roger Waters. He is so underrated compared to Townshend.

Meh, can't stand The Wall, Meddle and DSOTM are far superior.

Ted Nugent ain't no slouch....never has been. Technically and substantively better than many mentioned in this thread....i.e. Townsend, Iommi.....IMO.

For good reason. They are a great band.

This is an argument that never seems to die out. Meddle up through to the Wall is Floyd gold. I haven't taken the time to listen to anything pre-Meddle, but I have heard some post-Wall stuff.

Piper at the Gates of Dawn, and A Saucerful of Secrets were pretty good. Better than Ummagumma and Atom Heart Mother .

I love Floyd pre Gilmour and post Barrett. I love The Wall as well, but being the Barrett fan that I am, there are several points in The Wall that are almost identical note for note to some of Barrett's post Floyd work. Perhaps this is one of the reasons during his visit while they were recording Wish You Were Here, that Barrett replied that it sounded old when asked his opinion of their recording.

Most of what they did after he was kicked out of the band was because of him. He remained a huge influence in nearly all of their work, and wrote nearly everything on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. Truly a talented musician, marred by excessive drug use and mental instability. Evidence of this can be seen in his later recordings, and his knowledge that his time with the band was nearing an end on Jugband Blues.

I'm gonna have to add Gus G from Firewind/Ozzy now. Heard some of his stuff from Firewind and he's a pretty amazing shredder.
