Greatest guitarist of all time

Post » Mon Nov 15, 2010 6:21 am

Mine would have to be Dave Gilmor, Hendrix, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Robert Johnson, Prince, Randy Rhoads, Chet Atkins, both of the Emmanuels and Mark Knopfler

EDIT: Meant to call it favorite boy is my face red :whistling:

My favourites are Wrest (Leviathan), Kvarforth (Shining, Skitliv), and Hasjarl (Deathspell Omega)

I only picked black metal artists because I can't think of any other music I listen to that impresses me with guitar.. or maybe I just listen to bad music -_-

Dave Mustaine
Kirk Hammett
Eddie Van Halen
Joe Walsh
Zakk Wylde

I always thought Slash was a bit overrated (not bad, just not as good as his hype)

Van Halen is pretty good, forgot about him, who is the guitarist from Fleetwood Mac? I like his playing too

Sure, he wasn't the most technically gifted, hence the name, but you don't need self-congratulatory solos to make a great guitar section.

Mark Knopfler

Even though he isn't the most technical, he sure knows how to write awesome music (Local Hero and Telegraph road are his most 'epic' songs)

The greatest guitarist of all time is the one you like best. My ears say Tommy Emmanuel can really cut the mustard and spank the plank.

[edit] I see the OP changed to favorite. Yes. Tommy Emmanuel. I saw him live in a room with 300 other people and WOW what a solo performer ! An entertainer's Entertainer !

Allan Holdsworth and John McLaughlin generally sit atop my list. Then below that are Paul Masvidal, Fredrik Thordendal, and Piggy (of Voivod).

Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix, Rory Gallagher, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dean DeLeo, BB King, Joe Bonamassa, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen.

Kurt Cobain is up there as a "good" guitarist, he could write some chunky ass riffs, but far from a virtuoso.

Favourite is Akerfeldt of Opeth.

There's also Hendrix, not that I like a great deal of his songs, but he is a good guitarist. The guy out of Necrophagist impresses me technically, but bores me.

I like any guitarist who invests their playing (and song-writing too, that's important) with their own distinct style without overpowering it. Which makes my favourites, off the top of my head, Hendrix, Buckethead, Ler LaLonde, Sascha Lazor, John Frusciante (before he got big-headed and [censored]), Euronymous, Thomas Erak, Tony Iommi and James Williamson

I never understood why people love Hendrix so much. He was mediocre at best.

ok fine I'll agree that he was pretty damn good in his time, but today his work is only meh.

I think his stuff still holds up. Especially his blues covers. Damn if he didn't have a thick tone coming from that guitar!

Hendrix is one of those things where you feel like it's quite the bandwagon, but you know there is substance behind it.
