Grenade launcher lackluster?

Post » Tue Jul 19, 2011 12:21 am

Does anyone else find the grenade launcher rate of fire rather lackluster? Comparing weight and rate of fire, the grenade launcher just is 'meh' compared to its predecessor, the grenade rifle. On top of that, the rifle gets the barrel extension while the launcher gets nothing at all.

Even the Boomers seem to think it svcks; even with their Explosives skill at 92 and their Melee weapons skill at 17, their AI seems to determine that their melee weapons have a higher DPS than their grenade launchers, and equip their melee weapons instead.

According to DPS calculations in the GECK, full clip + reload time for the rifle is 41 damage. For the rifle? 53. For a tier 75 gun, it really is lackluster if it just has 12 DPS advantage over its tier 25 predecessor, for a price tag of 3900 caps higher and 6 PWUs heavier.

EDIT: Well it seems that the Boomer issue may have been caused by my forgetting to deactivate a failed attempt to make a 40mm buckshot alt ammo. But still... the DPS rate isn't really that good for a Tier 75 weapon regardless.

it does feel like mediocre/biggest reason i hate 40mm grenades is the awful range/mercy is such crap because of that.Whats the point of it if you gotta wait till enemies are point blank

I do think the weight is a bit off compare to other weapons in game. I suggest give it the gravity reduction/unit confusion like most weapon, i.e. reduce it weight in half.

The problem with the grenade launcher is the old rifle reloads rather quickly so having additional ammo capacity isn't that much of a boon when its pump action.

Here's something to keep in mind about the grenade launcher and rifle, they're quite effective in VATS, even if it says 10% chance to hit, chances are you'll still land a hit close enough to deal a hefty sum of damage especially if you target the legs. And with practice hitting targets at medium range should be no problem.

But weight/damage ration is still horrible, no matter how you look at it. Unlike Incinerators which have a super high damage/cap efficiency, 40mm isn't cheap and not recyclable/handload-able, not to mention the lack of surplus type.

The 40mm is cheap enough, From about mid game on I wouldn't call any ammo expensive.

And your damage/weight ratio forgets one all important fact AoE, I can fire over a hill to nail multiple Cazadors or blow up 3 fiends at once. I can also concentrate on evading fire more easily when missing by a couple feet deals the same damage as hiting dead on.

I'm finding thump thump quite effective at dealing with the legionary assassins that now come repeatedly, taking out four guys with a couple hundred hit points each in two shots is quite nice. (granted I have grunt and demolitions expertx3).

If the launcher wasn't pump action it actually be an improvement over the rifle as it could fire faster, as it stands it really isn't

Incinerators also do AoE and volley fire, to top it of it have DoT to finish off those who luck survive from initial damage. While explosive would suffer higher ammo expanse, I don't see why the weapons should suffer on top of it.

Rate of Fire isn't a huge improvement over Rifle, which I would like to see improvement, but at moment it is still better then reloading the Rifle.

Pump action is better than the rifle. And not by much. Reloading is one at a time.

I agree the Launcher is not a dramatic improvement over the Rifle. And firing freestyle, the Launcher seems to have a shorter range. But lately, I have been using VATS with both weapons. Like Lord said above - even a 10% hit chance is more then enough to score a hit.

I'm less underwhelmed by the DPS than by the fact that the grenade launcher is much heavier and costs a lot to repair. The grenade rifle is just light enough that it could be a secondary weapon, and it's dirt cheap.

It's an illusion. The projectile speed and gravity values are identical between the launcher's and rifle's projectiles.

I always have a grenade rifle on me but rarely use it as with Demolition Expert (3 ranks) + Splash Damage + Grunt + high Explosives skill it's very hard to not damage myself even with the long barrel mod to increase the range of it. It's a very powerful weapon in my opinion. Yet when I tried the grenade launcher it's range seemed to be right-in-front-of-my feet and seemed to have no damage increase with a terrible tendacy to reload when cazadores were in my face so I couldn't switch weapon. Plus it weighed way too much.

Ok so it seems that a lot of people are hating on the 40mm's
I object to that
I LOVE THEM ALL! Even though yeah the launcher is my least favorite
Personally, my main weapon is Mercy, it is my all time favorite weapon, I know it gets a lot of hate for it's range, but it's like you guys dont understand that it needs to arch weirdly, for some reason, compared to the rifle and launcher, the GMG/Mercy has a an unusual arch in that you need to aim it high to hit where the rifle would hit at a lower aim, but if you master it's arching then you can use it to snipe explode legion hit squads in one shot, and by snipe I mean aim almost directly in the air and it's weird arch will go pretty far, so yeah I love Mercy xD
As for rifle's yeah thump-thump is the way to go for it's basically straight arch and long range and high powered explosion
And as for the launcher, yeah it's not really the best thing, it works to kill things obviously, but with grunt thump thump actually basically becomes on par with it so it's virtually just more weight for same damage effect ecsentually so yeah launcher does sorta get a thumbs down when compared to GMG/Mercy and Rifle/Thump-thump :P
But remember! Without the launcher we wouldnt have the holoorifle, cause basically, the holorifle is the unique grenade launcher in the fact that, well, it is a grenade launcher just turned high-tech by Elijah, so we can thank it for that, so at least it was somehow useful!:D
