Grew up with Descent, my ideas

Post » Fri Apr 03, 2009 10:31 am

Played through D1, D2 and D3 and loved them all. Really like the franchise because it's different and will fits the keyboard and the console controllers perfectly because we're in a ship!

Stick to underground dark tunnels, please don't try to copy FPS'es. Do something Different.
Make BOT very important, something like the dog in Fable II.

My story to Descent 4.

Descent: Goldmine

A small mining company named ProMine has 6 one man-mining ships that harvest gold in a underground location on planet Eisa. You arrive at Eisa and are greeted by Angela Summers, a female mechanic, who was already waiting in the lobby leading to the elevators. Angela walks towards you and welcomes you to Eisa. She introduces herself and asks you to follow her down. Not much to see on the surface.

You step into the elevator that goes down and Angela tells you about the company you will start working for. ProMine had a rough couple of years so a lot of pilots and mechanics got fired. Since they found a new dig site, deep within the planet’s core, things are looking up again. They can’t seem to get in contact with the old pilots though, that’s why they are hiring. She gets a phone call from Eric, one of the remaining pilots, who tells her his ship has broken down and he’s stuck at the 3rd level. Angela excuses herself, hangs up and calls Jack, the maintenance guy, to pick up Jack and tow the ship back to the garage. While descending further into the mountain you cross a test laboratory level that shows you what the company does; pure old-fashioned gold mining. Angela tells about the process of retrieving the gold from the rocks while traveling downwards to the lower level.

As the elevator reaches the lower level, Angela asks you to come along and check up on the damaged mining ship. The elevator doors open and you walk through the small, deserted quarters and follow Angela to the garage. The environment looks white and clean. Some pictures of forests and oases are painted on the walls to remind the employees of earth. You see water stations, lockers and sleeping quarters. You walk past a leisure room where the tv is still on, playing an episode of a popular earth soap. Nobody is there though. Entering the dark lit garage you find Eric and Jack, examining the mining ship hanging from the ceiling. While Eric exits the cockpit, Jack says it’s missing the expensive drill head. Eric slams his hand against the metal hull and tells he must have lost it when it got stuck in a stone. Jack sighs and starts mumbling about getting into his vehicle and retrieving the drill. Then Angela points out this would be a great opportunity to get you into the mining ship for the first time. Eric and Angela will program BOT to guide you to the dig spot Eric was mining before his ship broke down; you will pick up the drill and return with it to the base.

Angela explains that BOT is a small flying guiding robot that has the total underground area baked inside his memory chip. It also has a gold detector built in to point out places to dig. You follow Angela back through the quarters towards the hanger where 5 mining ships are collecting dust in their chargers, sunken in the ground. Only the cockpit is visible above the floor. All of the ships are pointed outwards of the center. In the middle you see a circular control panel. One of the ship chargers is empty. Angela tells you these chargers are to clean-up, fill-up and recharge the ships. Angela asks you to pick a ship and get in. Pulling the handle on top of the cockpit opens the cockpit and you get in the small one-sitter. The cockpit closes automatically when you get in. The cockpit looks cold and humid and is mostly metal with a couple of screens.

Through the dusty cockpit glass you see Angela talking to you but you can’t hear her, she realizes this and walks towards the control panel and sits behind it. You hear the intercom crackle and she comes through telling you she has to unlock you from the charger. This will turn off the gravity engines so you will go zero gravity. Angela puts a helmet on and buckles up. During the process an orange flash light indicates the gravity engines are offline. From the cockpit you see a couple of objects losing contact with the surface. While unlocking, the metal casing around the ship retracts and the ship rises from its charger. It stops to hover in between the ceiling and the floor, time to start the pre-flight check.

SHIP TUTORIAL STARTS

Angela asks you to turn around and face the control panel in the middle of the hangar room. You see the red light above the control panel lighting up green when pointed towards the control panel. Next she asks you to strafe to the right and use the thruster to move forward a bit in order to turn the ship again en align for a safe exit. Do a roll to complete the check, and off you go!

Lights on the ship are on and you are looking at a long, drilled out tunnel. The tunnel is lit for the first 200 meters before it goes completely dark. Angela tells you to let out BOT and let him guide you the way to the lost drill head on the 3rd level.

"I hope this is only a tutorial mission and nothing more."

I like it as an idea, but there will need to be fighting included in the tutorial as well, right? Perhaps PTMC could send a couple of 'bots down to scout for precious metals, and upon encountering you open fire; fight back against them or something. A massive thank you to EA for:
- Producing great quality games time and time again
- Providing excellent technical support
- Never destroying any highly acclaimed studios for profit
- Never ripping people off
- Never wasting people's time

I say you should get basic mining lasers put into your ship as a precaution in case something caves in around you.

I would say maybe in the middle of the tutorial, a raid would occur and you'd have to escape (After all, it's gold, and lots of it! I'm sure there's lots of people who would want to get their hands on some) and you'd have to fight your way out. You and Angela regroup later and figure out who attacked.

PREPARE FOR DESCENT
(This line totally needs to be in a teaser)

I think I posted this before several months ago, but here it is again. This is a short story I wrote for the intro to the D3 single player level I built a while back...

"" "" = speech
* * = thought

I'd personally like to see us play an elite (somewhat renegade) space pilot like i outlined above, but in the whole universe it was originally set in. The CED begins to search for the source of the infection. Appeantly, it comes from deep space.

Nice little story MG. :)

I'd like to point out a couple of technical things... just because i work with engineers all day long. :P

1) mining equipment wouldn't be in a ship form like a pyro or the like. It would probably look like equipment in Red Faction (let's pretend I didn't say that name here! ;)) They pyro, if you look through the opening sequence in D1 was a specially designed space fairing craft by the Isrealise. They hacked on some better weapons, but it wasn't a mining craft.

2) that all being said, I'm not sure a "preflight check" is er.. necessary? for a piece of beatup mining gear. :)

:my two bits:

I 2 grew up with Descent1 and 3 (I tried to get d2, but i couldn't  ) My  for d4 is that it should continue off from d3, where MD1032 is ready to clean up the robot debris when a portal opens suddenly and svcks him into an alternate dimension. (tis is where the missions should start) he is again going through shorter versions of d1 and d2 and he already knows what is goin' to happen. He plans to stop dravis this time alone and (here it kinda becomes d3) succeeds, and he also manages to find a swich that opens a gate that (unfortunately, becomesa giant portal with evil bots pouring through. it should end here, leaving room for a d5 !!! :D

The mission should have lvls 1-7 from d1 with exelent graphics and lvls 1-8 fron d2, again with exellent graphics. an altered lvl 15 from descent 3 and that natural d4 last lvl.

The weapons should be: lazers lvl 1-9 ( lvl 1-3 is lazer, lvl 4-6 is super lazers, and lvl 7-9 iz mega lazers), gauss, vauss, vulcan, plasma, phoenix, sonic cannon, mining beamer cannon, EMD cannon, sliver shooter, fusion, super fusion, ultra omega, concussion, homing, sonic missle, phoenix missle ( like a smart, only that it realeases phoenix gobulets), smart missle, mrercury missle, earthshaker, black shark, supernova missle ( an upgraded version of black shark)

Whadya guyz tink?

Disreguarding the spam bot, I really don't think that we should go through the Descents again. The idea of going through D1 and D2 again and throwing in an original D4 level would be kindof boring. We are going through things we already know. Plus, Dravis copied and modified an existing "alien virus," and since we did not encounter or eradicate the threat of aliens in D3, D4 is most likely to have a plot based around an ailen invasion. If you read the books, it often has aliens in it controling the robots. If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

ok,then. how 'bout a 'contract' that dravis signed with some aliens? now that he is dead, the aliens get to re-modify it and realease it again? naw. Dravis was looking out for himself and was taking care of things BY himself. He trusted no one. He used everyone. He was the classic power hungry megalomaniac.

If you watch closely in the final cut scene in D3, you'll see a lone bot take off in an unknown direction. THAT can be used (and was intended iirc). we still need to find out where all this started and "get rid of it". .. of course, they've been doing the same thing with the Borg for nearly 20 years now. ;)

At any rate. I think MD being hired on by the ESF for "One more mission" with a fat reward and a hot new proto-type ship would be better suited.... but that's just me. ..thinking too practical again.

lol. WHICH ONE!? There are about 1000 of them left over!

Whatever happens with the ships, I'm going to stick with the GX! (And please gamesas, have an option to have the original GX cockpit!) If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Don't worry. I've developed a new Pyro ship ("Flace") which is actually based on Pyro-GX (I can hear some Descent fans are cheering... ) but I've also evolved the idea even further: brand-new cockpit (looks more GL style than GX  ) but the hud is GX-based. The appearence of "Flace" looks a little bit more GX than GL. All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... Hyv? Suomi!!

Aww come on Cypher!! I know this may sound stupid but I think Pyro-GX is old-fashioned (or is it?? ) so I thought that I want to upgrade it to modern model: Pyro-GT (nickname "Flace"). But I wanted to keep the cockpit as similar as GX has (I added some features from GL to GT). Although Pyro-GT looks more like Black Pyro, I designed "Flace" faster and stronger than Pyro-GL but still it looks more GX than GL... All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... Hyv? Suomi!!

Heh, actually the GL is an older model compaired to the GX. SAYS SO IN THE BOOKS!!! :D If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

I haven't read Telep's books!! Not translated in finnish!! Pyro-GL looks by the way newer than Pyro-GX. And "Flace" is a mixture of them. I combined the good advantages of them. You can see "Flace" on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/DiamondClaw1991 It is the first picture of it (I didn't use 3D graphics software) If you want to see the picture of the cockpit on "Flace", send me a message and I'll show the picture on my YouTube channel :D All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... I don't want to be flying something that flimsy! :P If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

Well, it looks a little bit flimsy but I can tell you that I didn't use any 3D graphics software. It is REAL
but so small model that fits in the palm of your hand. Model's windspan is about 10 centimetres :o :o :o and I created laser cannons and mercury missiles on the model. Finland had perfect conditions to capture the photo which is seen on my YouTube channel. 8-) All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... Hyv? Suomi!!

I was just talking about it being made out of clay. :)

I made mine out of Legos! Alot bigger than a hand! If you are going to fight a war, do it efficiently, unremittingly, or don't do it at all--I'm not into ethics, I'm into efficiency.--Benjamin St. John "Descent" by Peter Telep

We had to create some kind of mascot for cell phone so I chose the Pyro ship ^^. It had to be small (but my mascot became almost bigger than my cell phone (Nokia 6151)) :o All we need is sisu, sauna and salmiakki... Hyv? Suomi!!
