Grimioire mod?

Post » Thu Mar 18, 2010 4:23 pm

Those. Look. Awesome.

Now I wonder how we'll get them. Will it just be a resource, and we can add them in via console? Or will they be for sale in mage's guilds/imperial cults/tribunal temples? (the appropriate ones, of course), or perhaps hidden in various wizard lairs? Or maybe even given to the player upon character creation, depending on his/her dominant spellcasting ability?

I decided to just make them available for sale by one of the book sellers. That way it's not tied to any faction and they're all available to the player to purchase. Is 500 gold a little steep? They are grimoires after all, and not ordinary books.

It might be a bit late to hijack this thread, but is there a possibility of some more grimoires? The ones I had in mind would be a black one with some skull ornamentations and a dwemer one with images resembling gears. I can't offer much, but there is some :icecream: in it ;)

Other then that, these are some mighty fine books

I could do that. Did you want them for one or your mods, or just available in this one?

Available in this one, with the potential use of them if I'd ever get to finish some of my works (and obviously if permission would be given)

If i could chime in with some ideas to the black and dwmer one:

- The black/skull one could this be a special necromancer one and add a "stronger" version of the normal summon skeleton as an avalbile spell? I could script this all if you want.

If you go along with this the book shouldnt be avalbile to buy but rather found in a necromancer lair/equipment ( theres plenty of necromancers around to add the book too)

- The dwemer one should increase enchantment as the dwemer were handy with items/enchantments

Those are some neat ideas. I haven't done anything with the six books I've already made. Perhaps I should do something with them as well.

A very basic idea would be making the grimoires skillbooks. You could also script the school related ones to allow for spellmaking, each book adding a dummy spell with effects belonging to that school (to allow the creation of custom spells)

Or perhaps allow the PC to study them, learning several spells if he meets the requirement (skill in apropriate school of magicka above some level)

I was also thinking of using a mild fortify effect on the given skill in that school of magic that would have a duration of...I don't know, a minute or so? That would be a lot simpler than adding a whole bunch of custom spells, and perhaps a little less unbalancing in the long run.

Unfortunately, scripting them means the player has to choose between these benefits or the ability to write in them using Writing Enhanced, because it would have to use either one script or the other. I don't want to alter the Writing Enhanced scripts in any way or try to reproduce them with added effects for each book. In any case, it would make the books more useful for people not using them with Writing Enhanced.

I hope you don't mind me using http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/bard1.jpg (the small book with the skull) as a base for the necromancer's grimoire. I know it's pretty famous (the ultra super limited edition of the Tales of Beedle the Bard by J.K Rowling...not something everyone's going to have on their shelf because there's only seven in existence, and six of them belong only to Rowling and her close personal friends), but it really looks like exactly what I want, and I'm pretty sure that cover itself isn't copy protected. Call it an homage. ;)

These are very tasteful, I would definitely put them to good use in a mod if I may. I look forward to any non-school related additions.

Are they coming in open/closed/both forms? Or perhaps it would be easy enough to transfer the textures over with little editing. Sorry, if I missed the answer somewhere in the thread.

I kind of like the idea of keeping them as regular Writing Enhanced books. Then when I create my own spells in-game I can then "write" the spells in my spellbook (kinda like how they're "written" on scrolls) and it would just give a nice role-playing feel.

I wouldn't mind a couple more grimoires that are just generic spellcasting books...not necessarily tied to a school/discipline, but just functioning as a mage's personal spellbook.

I've only made closed versions, mainly because I like the covers enough to want to show them off, and they can't be seen very well in the game in open form. It would be easy to transfer the textures to an open book model, but then you have to find interior illustrations, and alter the book rotate scripting so that it switches out the open and closed version. I don't mind people using them, but I like to know what's done with them, and I do like to keep some internal consistency in the game. So if they're being used as spellbooks or grimoires, great, have at it! :)

I'll be making more non-spell books eventually that can be used as a resource for just about anything you can think of, but I also take requests, as you can see. :)

I think I'll do that then. I'll stick to the Writing Enhanced scripts for that version, and just add a little bonus to spellcasting skills temporarily for the regular mod...just so they're not completely useless eyecandy. ;)

I like the suggestion for the necromancer book though melian, because all the other magical skills are pretty much covered (including the dwemer enchanting book). I may make that one a little special and difficult to find.

Awesome grimoire.

If any grimoires will be in necro/wizard lairs, it seems to me they should be well protected, either on the person's body or hidden in a very nastily trapped chest.

I'm kind of working on this one as a side project, so it's coming together slowly. I've been writing a few more books for BoV and working on UL at the same time. When I get the urge to texture, I make another Grimoire. It'll come. :)

What about adding them to the "random_book_wizard_all" and "random_book_wizard_evil" levelled lists? Not really that sure where those are used but might give us a chance of seeing these out in the wild rather than just in bookshops.

oh wow great job i love them all though id have to say that The Grimoire of Destructions 1 scorch mark looks a tad odd to me. just a suggestion but instead of a single mark in the corner perhaps a more all over less obvious defect but over all they look great cant wait for the release of these i LOVE books in my game all kinds. keep up the great work.

I've made a slight modification to the scorch mark on the Destruction Grimoire, but no screenshot at the moment.

I still have to start the Dwemer/Enchanting one. For some reason that one has me stumped at the moment.

Wow, you've done some awesome work to this request, Stuporstar! Thank you! How much more work would it be to add metal hinges and ornaments on them?
My lappy crashed and I had to take it to GeekSquad to have it repaired so I've been off the forums for the past couple weeks.

When you read the books, are they just blank? I'm guessing they'd be filled with spell incantations that are presumably in Daedric or Old Elhnofey (Aldmeris). Is there a text font for Aldmeris?

There's already metal clasps and ornaments on them. I think hinges would be a bit much, because there's already ornaments all down the spine. ;)

The books are written in Daedric. There's no font for Aldmeris that comes packaged with the game. Only the Writing Enhanced versions are completely blank.

Well, they way I always viewed it, like in Daggerfall, it's just a book that you have that you write spells in. Remember in the spell maker or spell buyer in the Mages Guild? It'd say "This spell has been inscribed into your grimoire" whenever you bought a spell. It's kinda like a piece of music. You have it on paper and keep playing it while reading it and eventually you know it by heart and don't need to look at it. But at first, as always, you need it on paper to see what words to say to cast the spell. ............where was I going with this?
But you're right, they're not ordinary books. But they shouldn't really contain anything written in them either. However, since this game is not super duper advanced, you can't rig it to where every time you learn a new spell it writes it down in the spell book in some Daedric text. Or I guess you could but that'd be too much work.

But ya know, do what you're doing, and if it turns out that I don't like the price, I'll just change it in the Construction Set. lol That's a simple way to solve that issue.

I think 500 is a pretty good price. It makes me think they must be made of special/magical material, like scrolls, kind of. Scrolls contain spells, and are presumably made of some kind of paper. But regular paper is not magical and you can't put magic in it, so I gotta figure spellbooks are special in some way.

I'd always thought it'd be interesting to have a cohesive grimoire mod...sort of like NoM but for spellcasters. Like you have to have your spellbook on you or near you to be able to cast a spell, and if it's far away from you for a certain period of time, you forget your spells, but if you find it again and rest (aka "meditate") for a while you'll remember them again. But that's not the point of this...that goes way farther. Still these grimoires look awesome!

Here is the last one, http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/9504/grimoireenchanting.jpg.

Now I just need to add the scripting, and it will be good to go.
